Shannen Doherty, Danny Bonaduce to star in new Syfy original movies. Or were those reality shows? Who can tell the difference anymore?

As a lover of all things terrible – The Room, cheese curds, this rhyme in LFO’s “Summer Girls”: “When you take a sip you buzz like a hornet / Billy Shakespeare wrote a whole bunch of sonnets” –  I’m obviously a fan of the Syfy Original Movie. In fact, I’m such supporter of the network’s Saturday night movies, that my parents gifted me the only two items I wanted for my birthday: DVDs of Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus and Mega Piranha. There’s something about the cheesy special effects combined with the awful dialogue (“That, I do, sir.”) and the appeal of seeing oversized creatures in no way equipped to launch themselves into buildings do just that that makes every Syfy movie one deliciously horrible mixture.

But, surprisingly, for a series of films that thrive solely based on how fake they look, Syfy’s original TV movies could easily be mistaken for the latest celebrity-driven reality shows, thanks to its C-, D-, or even F-list casts. Especially when you look at the network’s new slate of films, announced yesterday: Two ex-reality stars – Breaking Bonaduce’s Danny Bonaduce and Dancing With the Stars’ Shannen Doherty – are on tap to star in two of Syfy’s upcoming films: Bonaduce will track the mysterious sasquatch in Bigfoot, while Doherty will play Gretl in an update of the famous Brothers Grimm tale Hansel and Gretel.

So in honor of this casting news, let’s play: Syfy movie cast or reality TV show cast? Vote below, and see the bottom for the answers! (No cheating!) Don’t worry – if you’re a Syfy fan, this game will be easier than defeating a legion of Mega Pirahna with your feet.

Answers: 1) Syfy Movie (Mega Shark vs. Crocosaurus); 2) Reality Show (I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!) 3) Reality Show (Celebrity Fit Club, season 4); Syfy Movie (Mega Piranha); 5) Reality Show (The Surreal Life, season 3); 6) Syfy Movie (MegaFault); 7) Syfy Movie (Sharktopus); 8 ) Reality Show (Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew); 9) Reality Show (The Celebrity Apprentice); 10) Syfy Movie (Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus)

So now Shannen Doherty is officially known as “reality star Shannen Doherty”? (Wah, wah.)

“Reality star Danny Bonaduce”, on the other hand, sounds about right. (Except maybe for the “star” part.)

I love that you managed to work that LFO rhyme. I am also a lover of all things terrible.

I also love the Cheesy SyFy Saturday movie. The best yet, was Mega Python Vs. Gatoroid, where the mega python ate Mickey Dolenz!

How can anyone mistake a reality show (99.9% no talent garbage) with a movie(even the worst movie made is better)? I wish EW would quit promoting this kind of crap. You have to have the mentality of a WWF watcher to think its entertainment.

She’s comparing the similarity in the casting. Thus the point of the quiz? (I did horribly on the quiz; I’m not sure if that’s a bad thing or a good thing.) Plus, reality competition shows can actually be quite good. DWTS is a whole lot of cheesy feel-good fun. SYTYCD is actually a pretty quality show. I’ve never seen The Amazing Race but my understanding is that it’s an excellent show. Not all reality shows are Jersey Shore or Rock of Love or Real Housewives or whatever.

Oh get over yourself. Not all entertainment has to be highbrow. And why are you reading this article if you aren’t just a little interested? I enjoy some, not all, of the cheesy Scyfy network movies and I love reality tv. It’s nice to have something to laugh at when my week omes to an end.

it would definitely have to be syfy movie if Brittany Murphy was involved…. because…. umm…. she’s a bit too deceased to star in anything anymore.

  • JoeC

Um, given the fact that Shannen was booted from ‘DWTS’ after 1 week, can you even put on her resume that she was on the show????

    • orville

Sure, why not? Kenny Mayne has been hilariously milking it for years.

      • JoeC

        True…

Having said that, I love her, and when she has that movie on SCIFY, I will watch!

The Founder of Prehistoric Channel just wrote his first thriller book called THE ICE GORILLA. Rumor has it that movie producers are trying to turn THE ICE GORILLA into a movie but will be looking to see how book sales go first. If you can check out THE ICE GORILLA @ Amazon and lets try and get this perfect syfy channel concept made.
