I loved it. It makes total sense. Plotwise, with Albee in prison, Bill’s guard would have been down. Evil wouldn’t take his life, but a mentally unstable person would. I just couldn’t see Bill going to prison. Bill passed the priesthood to Barb in his dieing moments, surrounded by his wives. It was tragic and beautiful, and seemed to have the desired effect. They’re cemented as a family after Bill is gone.
I loved the ending. The only thing I did want was for Albie to have been shown in the finale.
I found the ending very touching and beautiful. I loved them showing Bill sitting there watching over them when they were all hugging each other and Margie talked about how she wished he could have been there on that day. He was, ladies, he was
I thought they were going to go out WACO style….damn.
I liked the ending b/c I felt that Bill held the women (except Nicki)back from being individuals, his death allowed them to be just that. I always liked the relationship between Bill and Barb. I felt that they had true love and I like that Bill asked her for a blessing right before he died. The show was great to watch. The characters were flawed and funny at the sametime. I’ll miss it but HBO never lets you down. They will have a great replacement soon.
But you’re missing the point: family is eternal. Bill is there, if only in spirit. This life is only a prelude to an eternity of togetherness.
At least from the LDS point of view.
The people in this show were not part of the mainstream LDS church, they only call themselves that. They don’t hold the priesthood authority, which is vital to the eternal family. If you want to learn more about the true LDS church, try Mormon. org or lds. org. It amazes me that people think they know about the LDS church when all of the “facts” that they learn come from hearsay or antimormon sources.
I think the definition of the “true” LDS church is up for debate, just like the show addressed. Don’t forget your history.
The only difference between the LDS and the FLDS is the issue of polygamy here ON EARTH. Other than that they have the same doctrines and beliefs and follow the same books (Book of Mormon, Word of Wisdom, Doctrine & Covenants, Book of Abraham, etc.) and early prophets; Joseph Smith, Brigham Young, et al.
On the issue of polygamy, mainstream LDS/mormon doctrine teaches that men who reach the Celestial Kingdom will be given and sealed to many wives who will bear them “spirit children” in addition to the wife they were sealed with on earth. It just so happens that so does the FLDS.
The only reason that the LDS does NOT practice polygamy now, is because Utah could not obtain statehood if they did not outlaw polygamy. The FLDS did not agree with the very conveniently timed “revelation” against polygamy and separated from the main LDS church.
That’s it. Historical Fact. Not anti-mormon propaganda.
I don’t understand why the LDS members get all bent out of shape and deny their own history whenever there is some sort of comparison between the LDS and the FLDS.
they could have easily made another season and made it GOOD. why are all of the good shows being axed??
I hated it, Bill was an ego-maniacal bully who was so driven by his own ambitions that he left his wives’ needs and wants in his dust. I am fine with him dying, but not as a martyr and hero. I wanted Barb to branch out, Margene to run off and Nicky to be left holding the cause because she was the only person crazy enough to belong with him.
I’m with you, Jessica.
Excellent review! Loved the ending, especially the way the family thrived without Bill. Brilliant script and marvelous acting throughout the finale! However, I’m going to miss this show so much. It’s a real shame they had to end it so soon!!
When I hear that an HBO show (or any show for that matter) is about to conclude its run, I automatically flash back to “The Sopranos” and their chicken-spit ending in the finale (there were two courses of action that could have ended “The Sopranos:” Tony lives, Tony dies. David Chase copped out and did NEITHER). I was so relieved to see that the writers actually took a stand and wrote a story with a conclusion, rather than create false debate and interest in the entirity of the series by leaving ambiguous story lines unsettled. Bill essentially became a martyr for his beliefs. The show honestly could have continued… I would love to have seen how the three wives continued their “marriage” without a man. On the compound, the wives would have been “reassigned/resealed.” In the civilized world, they are (legally) nothing, but they chose to stay a family. Good job, Big Love. Way to commit to the story!
Tony Soprano dies in the last episode. Google it and read the analysis. Its all there.
I knew that he was going to die the minute he put the orange in his mouth (a la The Godfather) . . . oranges are a cinematic symbol for death.
I cant believe i didnt catch that one. Especially since he made such a big deal of oranges for desert.
LOVED IT would have loved to have seen joey and wanda but it ended good, so sad its over.
Well, it certainly stopped any conjecture about whether they’d ALL be back again. Unless there will be a new series of the ghost and many mrs muirs.
LOL!
I guess I liked it, but I wanted to see more of what happened to Albie. And, I hated Nicky (who is my fave on the show) being the “legal” widow.
Ya that bothered me too.
Looking back at it, I think Bill had determined that allowing Barb to have the priesthood was the way to go when he had the vision in his church of Joseph Smith’s wife. I think that’s what he was writing down when he was in the back yard and what he was referring to when he spoke to Don and Ben about “knowing what this means”. As stubborn as Bill might have been at times, in the end he only cared about the welfare of his entire family. I believe he truly loved each of his wives and I applaud the writers for showing that that kind of love could exist.
