'Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark' faces sixth delay and possible exit of director Julie Taymor: Report

Producers may halt performances for two to three weeks and delay the show’s official opening to sometime this summer in order to rework the $65 million production, which continues to be one of Broadway’s highest grossers despite an icy critical reception last month.

Veteran Broadway directors Christopher Ashley (Memphis) and Philip William McKinley (The Boy from Oz) have reportedly been approached about joining Spider-Man‘s creative team, possibly without Taymor onboard.

When reached for comment, a rep for the show responded, “We are not confirming, or commenting, on the rumors.”

I think people are only seeing it because it’s so bad.

    • PJ

Yeah, totally. That’s why it’s been selling out for months at over $100 a ticket.

They should cast Charlie Sheen as Spider-Man. The train wreck celebrity of the year in the train wreck show of the year. The show could run for years on morbid curiosity alone.

I can’t speak for anyone else, but a “Spider Man” musical ALWAYS seemed like a terrible idea and the only reason I’d even consider checking it out is because of Julie Taymor.

I felt like it was either going to be brilliant translation to the stage (like her work on “The Lion King”) or a mess, but at least it would be interesting. Either way the removal of Taymor would be disappointing because since this thing seems pretty much unsalvageable, they should just let her go down with her crazy ship.

I agree, let her see that mess through.

Yeah their first problem was thinking Spider-Man needed to be a musical. WRONG. I know they spent a ton of money on this show, but just let it die already.

I have a ticket for the March 26th show, and I hope the show still goes on. I for one want to see the show in it’s current incarnation because I love to watch total trainwrecks.

Can they start with changing the title? “Turn Off The Dark” sounds more and more annoying every time I hear it.

If that is a picture of the production, then this is a good thing. It’s a VERY good thing.

Wrong villains with the wrong look. What is she smokin?

At this point it’s just like rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic.

A Spider-Man musical. . . why did anyone at anytime think this was a good idea? And then, why did they feel the need to completely rewrite the story? This is the problem when you bring several huge egos to the table: they all think they can “improve” the original but all they end up doing is making it into a huge joke. Just looking at the picture in this article lets me know that these people have no clue what Spidey should be. Frankenstein?!? WTF?!?

Having said that, I have tickets to the show this Wednesday afternoon. I have to see this craziness for myself, being a huge Spidey fan! Plus, my daughter’s a theater major and they are doing some pretty cool stuff with the staging and stunts.

Does this remind anyone (who’s old enough to remember) of Michael Cimino and “Heaven’s Gate?”

The ego, the poor idea in the first place, the delays, the massively overbudget production, the constant tinkering…?

  • Bette

Yes…In 1981, Cimino’s film cost $36 million, and Spider-Man is right up there as well. Wretched excess at its worst. What a ridiculous waste of talent and money.

so i won’t get my money back for my April 27 tickets????
