'Tomb Raider': Who should be the new Lara Croft?

kunis-arterton-wildeImage Credit: Chris Hatcher/PR Photos; Solarpix/PR Photos; Peter Kramer/AP ImagesIt’s easy to be cynical about the just-announced reboot of the Tomb Raider film franchise. Angelina Jolie’s turn as skimpily-dressed treasure hunter Lara Croft was incredibly iconic — it’s a big reason why she’s basically the only go-to action heroine left in Hollywood — and it’s hard to imagine a younger actress stepping into the role. Still, it’s worth pointing out that neither of the original Lara Croft films were all that great. And considering that, Sucker Punch excepted, female-driven action movies are few and far between, a Tomb Raider reboot could actually be a great way to kickstart the career of the next great female action star. But who should play Lara Croft? Mila Kunis seems like an obvious choice. (She even played a younger Jolie in Gia.) Olivia Wilde and Scarlett Johansson have both had some action-film success. My personal pick would be Gemma Arterton — hey, why not cast someone who’s actually British this time? Vote for the next Lara Croft in our poll after the jump, and let us know in the comment boards if we missed your personal pick.

    Mila Kunis… pleeease

    • Mr. Holloway

Mila Kunis is absolutely stunning, and I’m pretty confident she can make a credible action heroine…

…but I just can’t see her doing a credible (or even non-embarrassing) English accent. Maybe I’m wrong. (Or maybe I’ve just seen too many “That 70′s Show” episodes.)

      • Joe

I completely forgot about the accent! I was thinking she’d be perfect…except perhaps for that

      • Trenton

That and she is a twig…Anjie was tall at least, she had a presence

      • Megz

Agree on the accent talent, that’s why Gemma Arterton would be great, but she definitely needs to work out and look more athletic

      • Smurfeater

Seriously? She was born in Ukraine and speaks English with a perfect American accent and you think she can’t do accents? Good God…

      • Thomas

James Franco in drag would be the perfect Lara Croft.

      • Tracy

Alison Carroll would be the perfect Lara. She has a British accent and look like Lara. She also a gymnastic in real life.

      • Mr. Holloway

        @ Smurfeater.

Even though she was born in the Ukraine, I’m pretty sure she grew up in the U.S., meaning that her American accent is pretty much completely natural and the way she speaks.

It’s not like she’s “doing” an American accent when she talks. On top of that, nothing in her filmography suggests even a hint of a Streep-like ability to master different accents.

So yes…I STILL have doubts that she could pull off an English accent, even though you seem weirdly confident that she can.

    • noelbelle

Although she’s fab and gorgeous, she’s too petite. Lara Croft is a bombshell. Plus, I also doubt the accent chops.

      • memine

Scarlett Jo played some legit action scenes in Iron Man.

    • Tom

There is a big problem with this question. Will kids watching this movie today even know or relate to the game Tomb Raider??? It was from oh I don’t know, 1994. Aren’t they all grown up by now? Who is going to see this? Just askin

      • TheRealEverton

It was grown ups who went to see the first film. It was crap so they didn’t bother with the, improved, sequel.

    • kay livermore

I like Mial and Scarlett but Scarlett has more of the lip and boobs. Maby if you dye her hair brown?

    • A-K87

How about thinking outside of the box and suggesting someone like Melissa George who is a convincing actress and a champion athlete in her youth.

She gas the full lips and large eyes…

    • Arabella Luminos

There is only one person to play Laura Croft..the immensely talented, powerfully sexy and regal Eva Green

      • Katie

Oh wow! Eva Green looks just like Lara! Face-wise anyway….
If they cast Gemma Arterton…I won’t see it. She has the most obnoxious voice in the world. She’s the reason why I didn’t even bother to see Clash of the Titans or Prince of Persia. Speaking of which, what’s up with everyone using British accents in sword and sandal movies? Lmfao.

    • Town

Jessica biel! For the look of the younger character they made for the game, she is a carbon copy of Biel…. Besides Jessica would rock this film… And she can act better than most the girls mentioned on this board.

  • Josie

I’ve always been partial to Alexa Devalos

    • Gael

      yes.

    • Summer

Oh, yes please! I just want to see her in something!

      • Dorkus Maximus

        Preferably my bed.

  • Long Balls

    I’d bang any of them

    • Nona

      But would they bang you?

  • lguess

Id keep Angelina – but kunis is a great choice.

    • Liz Lemon

Yeah. The role is Angelina’s. I can’t picture anyone else in it now.
But Mila or Gemma would be okay replacements.

      • Joseph

Yeah, stay with Angelina, She looks Strikingly like the lara character in the game and I think that she is the only one that can play that part, just like Harrison Ford is the only one that can play Indiana Jones.

      • A-K87

Liz Lemon, let’s give Melissa George from In Treatment a go.

      • Only Angie

Yep, Just stick to Angelina. case closed.

  • Sarah

I’m glad that Megan Fox’s name is not on the list.

    • Nicotine

      Me too!!!

      • Peter

and why is that … ? somebody’s jelous lol

      • Thomas

Peter…ever film Megan Fox has been in has been total crap. She’s a great model, but a lousy actress.

    • Underdawg

Yeah.. No crap.. She’s not that spectacular and she has ugly hands… Just sayin’

      • blieu12

Her hands are creepy but the rest of her is smokin hot, and she has more than a passing resemblance to Angie. BUT I believe that Mila has what it takes in her.

      • A-K87

        Hot or Nor.

She DOESN’T looh like the character from the game, would never pass as an intellectual and isn’t buxom enough.

  • KC

    Lea Michelle.
She has a nose for danger and intrigue.

    • jasmine

      NO

    • Albert

      um…danger? no. worst choice ever.

      • Mr. Holloway

If it makes you feel any better, KC’s post wasn’t supposed to be a serious suggestion…it was more of an incredibly forced and contrived way to make fun of Lea Michele’s nose.

    • RogerThat

      HAHAHAHAHA!!! Her nose… so witty

  • Jose

I voted for the cast of Sucker Punch, mainly because the idea of that happening is so ridiculous that I must see it.

But Arterton is a good idea.

    • Flax

The Sucker Punch gals are 4 feet tall, tops. Arteton was terrible in “Tamara Drewe;” was upstaged by everyone in the movie and she played Tamara Drewe. Don’t remember her in Quantum but pretty wishy washy as an actress overall.

      • TheRealEverton

I can only assume you haven’t seen The Dissapearence of Alice Creed?

      • Katie

The Disappearence of Alice Creed was pure garbage.

  • JLC

Didn’t see Book of Eli. Did Mila do any action scenes in that?
My pick would be Olivia Wilde, based on Tron, but any of these suggestions would be okay.

    • caj

Mila looked pretty kick @ss & hot carrying a machete at the end of Eli. She did have an action scene in the movie, she did good. I think she is the most suitable for Croft out of the ladies listed. However, I don’t know why they would take Angie out of the picture though, she’s still smoke’n.

    • JAM

I agree on Olivia Wilde. She’d be the best choice in my mind.

  • Jenz

Why can’t they come up with new female action characters? Re-doing Buffy, re-doing Charlie’s Angels, re-doing Wonder Woman, now re-doing Lara Croft. We need a fresh new butt-kicking female.

    • Tajah

Completely agree! We need new heroines.

    • Big Walt

Doesn’t this pretty much completely overlap with the “Who should play Wonder Woman” question? Colbie Smulders hasn’t been mentioned yet has she?

      • Chuck Lorre Won

Colbie Smulders should be mentioned for ALL smoking hot roles!

    • Rob Grizzly

“Female-driven action movies are few and far between?” What decade is Darren living in?

Mila Kunis is a horrible choice btw. They all are, actually. Scar-Jo? Hathaway? Blake Lively? I’m going to hurt you, Finch…

      Ground rules:
      1. Croft should, first and foremost, actually be BRITISH this time. A newcomer would be ideal for me.
      2. Younger is fine, but no kids under 24.
      3. Don’t just go for looks, and don’t just go for ‘action experience’. As someone mentioned, Croft is nearly as iconic as Wonder Woman. There needs to be some serious presence to this new Lara. Not just the usual Hollywood babes. (Jolie actually embodied this, I’ll miss her)

      • Camellia

Thats why Gemma would be perfect

      • TheRealEverton

You could argue that more people are aware of Lara Croft, (as I’n have played a game or watched a film involving her in the past 20 years) than have had any hands on experience with Wonder Woman I’n the same period. Her comics certainly haven’t sold anywhere near Croft’s level.

    • anya

I’m just kind of wondering why we have to do this again. Weren’t the first movies bad enough? Well, I guess if I had to see this film for some reason, Mila would be the girl I’d like to stare at for the longest amount of time, since if it’s like the last movies, I won’t be listening to any of the ridiculous dialog anyway.

    • Shiny

Wilde is in Cowboys and Aliens; looks like the part is hers to lose. But no Zoe Zaldana or Michelle Rodriguez? Michelle is at least believable, but doubt she can do the accent.

      • Chuck Lorre Won

Well, if you’re throwing Zaldana & Rodriguez out there, why not Helen Mirren? Or get really bold & change it to a 3ft tall “Larry Croft.” See how silly it sounds? Enough of the PC suggestions!

      • TheRealEverton

Everything to do with ethnicity isn’t PC. The Helen Mirren idea has merit though. Old Croft teaching / passing on to Lara Jnr. I’d take her over all of these no eating, stick thin Super Models being touted!

      • jury’s out

Jolie is too thin to realistically be an action heroine and Zaldana is even thinner.

      • Jack Donaghy

Zoe Saldana would rock. And keep things interesting…

    • Sheila G

Everything seems to be a “re-do.” Come up with something original for a change! They even re-do things that sucked to begin with (The A-Team). Seriously, just stop it. Buffy with out SMG? Tomb Raider with out AJ? Stupid!

  • mariana

what abou princess leia she is a latina girl but i heard tha she is amazing and my vote is for her

  • Stacie

Never much liked Kunis. I’d take Arterton though.

  • Kim

It should be Angelina Jolie. No one else deserves this role other than her.She is a fantastic Lara Croft.

    • Steph

I really wish Angelina Jolie could do this one too! I loved her in the first two. But this movie is supposed to be an origins story and Angelina can’t play herself even younger than she was 10 years ago. I just wouldn’t work. Oh well.

    • Bonita

Yeah, Angelina Jolie seems to be the best choice for me. I loved all the Lara Croft series with her in it.

  • leia

what abou leia i believe that she has the potencial

  • mariana

what abou leia i voted for her

  • Scott

Definitely Arterton. She would be perfect.

    • Maylin

      Rhona Mitra
