Image Credit: Jack Rowand/The CWAnd the Smallville fan nation says: “Now this is more like it.” Last week’s aggressively goofy outing inspired by The Hangover elicited howls of outrage from longtime fans of the show for any number of reasons, from its silly premise to its clumsy send-off of Allison Mack’s Chloe. Last night’s episode “Scion” – in which Clark Kent (and fiancée Lois Lane) took on the responsibility of raising the Last Son of Krypton’s genetically engineered half-bro Conner (High School Musical’s Lucas Grabeel) – put the show back on the dark(seid) epic path of its final season following the absurdly light digression of “Fortune.” Judging from other reactions, longtime Smallville fans were much happier with “Scion.” Hopefully it was meal enough to sate them during the six-week Lenten fast that’s now upon us: There’s no new Smallville until April 15.
For the record, I was greatly amused by “Fortune” and haven’t thought twice about that opinion. And at the risk of appearing cranky and contrarian, I thought “Scion” was disappointing. The more I think about it, the more it sours in my mind. It began with Tess (Cassidy Freeman, pictured) telling Clark that Alexander Luthor wasn’t just a clone of the late of Lex Luthor – half of him was bred from Kal’s super-genes. Superman 1.0, meet Superboy 2.0. The quick-grow boy – now a hormonally charged adolescent – preferred the name Conner, derived from the term scientists had given him: Cognitive Neuroplastic Replicant. Tess asked Clark to help her hide Conner from Lionel Luthor (the always great John Glover), and more, help raise him to be more of a Kent than a Luthor. Clark immediately signed up. He felt an immediate kinship to this Kryptonian half-breed and an instant empathy for his predicament, as he, too, knows all about the alienation of feeling profoundly “different.” Clark had to sell Lois on the idea of serving as a de facto foster family– to be Conner’s Ma and Pa Kent – and despite some initial reluctance she bought in. Poppycock. I found the idea that these young lovers would so readily give themselves over to this parenthood project even more of a stretch than last week’s Zantanna-zapped champagne shenanigans. I think a better version of this episode would have had Clark struggling with the decision to become a father figure to Conner before ultimately accepting the responsibility – especially after Conner ogled Lois and uncorked that infernal emission in the barn. Hard to believe Clark would put this strange kid’s needs over his soon-to-be wife’s safety and comfort. (What’s going to happen when he gets his X-ray vision? Conner! Are you checking out your stepmom’s thong again?)
Parallel World Lionel wanted to get his mitts on his ersatz replacement child so he could use him as a tool in his bid for world domination, and to a lesser degree, fill the Lex-shaped daddy void in his life. Bothered by the amount of do-gooding/self-limiting Kent in the kid, Lionel gave Conner a red kryptonite ring – to test his capacity for do-badding/self-indulging Luthor in him, and to give him a taste for it. The irony of the red kryptonite thing is that it’s no more contrived or ridiculous a storytelling device as, say, Zantanna-zapped champagne. It may even be more contrived and ridiculous – but we give it a pass because it’s part of the Superman mythology and we dig the fact that the show is fanboyish enough to embrace that kind of thing without apology or rationalization. My bigger problem with red kryptonite is that requires you to buy into the whole “we all have a dark side” conceit/cliche, as if our moral character was so black/white simplistic, or no more complex than a shallow extrapolation of Freud’s Id/Ego/Superego construct. Yes, red kryptonite invites us to imagine what we might to do if we let go of our inhibitions. Valid. I just wish these kind of stories would inspire us to imagine more creative, clever possibilities than “Scion’s” I Was Almost A Teenage Super-Rapist creepiness. Conner went crackers in a teenybonkers kind of way, expressing his adolescent rebelliousness by making a move on Lois after saving her from Lionel’s bullet. She appreciated the mink – she was cold – but when he swiped the jewels and stole the ride for her, she got the drift and groaned. Superboy’s got a crush on me – and now he wants to literally crush me! Next thing we knew, she was yelping and fighting for her life when Conner took her to a dank abandoned warehouse and got frighteningly manhandly with her. Poor Lois. If she wasn’t a stationary sex object to be leered at in this episode, then she was an imperiled sex object for powerful men to beat, molest or save. Lois – and Erica Durance – deserved better.
In the end: Tess wrested control of Luthor Corp. from Lionel. We last saw Big Bad Luthor Daddy moping around the grave of Lex 1.0, yearning for a world where his boy could live once again – and with that, Darkseid suddenly appeared, like some wish-granting devil-genie. Michael Rosenbaum, the groundwork for your eagerly awaited return has now been laid. And Clark enrolled Conner at Smallville High. Was Smallville setting up the possibility of a spin-off? Smallville 2.0 with Super-Clone Conner? If so: Would you watch? Or do you think Conner is destined for membership in the Legion of Super-Heroes? (Yeah, I saw that Legion flight ring in the previews, too.) The boards are yours.

I stopped watching Smallville six years ago because life got in the way. From the sound of things, the geek in me is sorry he’s missing it!
You’re not missing much this season. Smallville has been taken over by the Luthors and has become Boresville. Last season was 1000x time than this crappy season.
That is a little harsh, the first three seasons for me will always be the best, the show kind of lost its way for seasons 4-6 with the bottom of the series being season 5, seasons 7-9 were very good and thought they would finish with a wonderful season 10, but aside from the premiere episode and “Homecoming”, this season has been very disappointing, verging on season 4-6 territory of being bad. “Fortune” was by far one of the all time worst Smallville episodes ever made, Scion was decent, but I hope they go all out for the remaining episodes – ie: let him learn to fly.
If you don’t think that Clark would readily become a mentor/father-figure to Conner then you don’t know his character on Smallville or Superman. This was a man who is constantly striving to live the way his parents taught him. His parents took him in, as well as other kids temporarily through out the show (including Lois). I don’t think the fact that Conner had the hots for Lois would enrage Clark so that he would abandon a kid with his powers and just let him run off not knowing how to cope with said powers.
Totally agree, my 12 year old son watched this episode with me as he is a big fan of the show, young justice and in young justice, Clark is hesitant towards superboy and he asked me why in Smallville, Clark was so excepting of this version and that was pretty much my summary of him.
Accepting, not excepting.
I agree, Clark didn’t give him much of any grief, but that’s Clark. He’s pretty gentle and trusting, really.
Also, Baba Booey, you are a huge clod.
Yeah but Clark is NOT SUPERMAN and he’s only 25 years old.
If Clark got upset at everyone who had the hots for Lois he’d never help anyone.
Loved the episode – can’t wait to see Michael Rosenbaum back. This oughta be good!
And am I the only one who went to “Smallville High School Musical” in my head? Now that’s a spinoff I’d watch.
Wow, that was a longer post than I expected. Did NOT meant to write a novella. hahaha
Did not *mean* to write one. oops
What “longer post”?
Green K’s radiation can hurt Clark or Connor from afar but it appears that Red K must come in contact with Clark or Connor to have any effect. True? If not, then how could Clark break the ring without himself being effected by the Red K?
When Lionel pulled Connor away from Clark and Connor’s eyes lit up, I thought: finally, the “Clark I will not kill” code can be safely ignored. I was hoping that Connor would fry Lionel.
Is Connor aging normally now or is he still destined to become Lex 2.0 and by default, evil? It would be nice to believe that he can control his destiny and not submit to the dark side. Remember a movie called “The Boys from Brazil”? In the end, the nazi hunter did not kill the Hitler clone because he believed that the clone was not inherently evil.
Conner is now pretty much modern day Superboy (who first appeared as one of the new supermen when superman died in the 1990′s, so I doubt they are gonna bring back Lex that way. I though it was funny when he showed the superboy tshirt since that immediately made him the most accurately dressed like the comics character in 10 years.
other kriptonite has also had to be up close and personal to be effective such as the black, blue ,and of course the silver stuff. my how quickly we forget as for a truly bad as Lex Luthor black kriptonite + connor and Daddy Darkness from the darker universe can leave us with both a good superboy and Lex with no good side whatsoever are you scared well you should be.
Correct, Green K has a wider radiation range than Red, Blue, diamond, and Black (and probably Gold).
Frying Lionel would’ve been a step towards Lex, IMO. Lionel from Earth 1 did eventually reform, so Connor (who himself is reformed, albeit partially via the loss of Lex’s memories) wouldn’t have made the Supermanly choice in killing Lionel.
Connor is now aging normally, thanks to Clark’s DNA stabilizing the clone. His destiny is his own to make now, just like everyone else’s. The Real Lex is returning thanks to Darkseid.
When is Ken Tucker going to come back to recapping this show?
I think he could only stomach so much crap before his digestive system shut down!
It wasn’t my favorite episode, but it had its moments. For one, you can’t ever go wrong with John Glover. You just can’t. He’s awesome. However, it was a little too creepy for me when Conner was crushing on Lois and brought her to the remains of the Luthor mansion. Really? I do like that Clark has someone else to relate to and be a mentor to, though. I also thought it was cute that even with her misgivings, Lois agreed right away to help Clark w/ Conner when he told her about how out of place he felt growing up. The other thing I liked about the episode was Tess outsmarting Lionel and standing up to him. We already knew that she was very capable. Lastly, that final shot of Darkseid appearing to Lionel at the cemetery was very cool. I had no idea we’d be seeing Darkseid almost fully formed in this episode. I can’t believe we now have to wait another 6 weeks for a new episode. Didn’t the show just return from a 2 month hiatus? That just sucks.
as for the show just comming back from a 2 month void yes we had a month yes a month of of smallville . but folks march break yes this is why the show is on break again. and no I ain’t happy about it. we have one more apprence of pa kent on the schedule plus booster gols and the blue beetle coming and a two part finally so thats 4 episodes spoken for. so how many others`are left
sorry about the spelling.
5 episodes, 6 hours (since the Finale is episode 21 and 22 airing back-to-back).
The reason there are so many breaks is that there are only 22 episodes in the season and they film while it’s on the air. If they aired seasons all in one shot, we’d have 30 weeks of hiatus, which would be much worse.
You want to talk about creepy Connor crushes – nothing was ickier than Cordelia and Connor (Angel’s son) actually doing the deed and having a baby (albeit a grown one) together. Ick, ick, ick. Okay, I know that is off topic a bit but it was the first thing that popped into my mind when they named the kid Connor.
Well, his name is Conner in the comics (or rather Kon-El, and then later Conner, but I can see why the show would need a simpler explanation for his name).
It’s been years since I saw those Angel episodes so I don’t remember exactly what happened, but as far as I’m concerned, Cordelia was already possessed when she slept with Conner.
Cordelia was already possessed at that point. I’m not sure she was aware of it though.
Connor Kent has been around since 1993 in the comics.
Cordelia was aware before the beast ever showed up. The episode where the beast was introduced was when they did said deed. She became aware of what she was when Lorne gave her the potion to bring her memory back.
I loved Buffy and Angel, but I don’t know if I’ll ever forgive Joss and the other writers for what they did to Cordelia.
I enjoyed this episode. I also agree that Clark would take him in and help raise him because that is the kind of person he was raised to be. He has taken in other lost individuals in the past (see flash and the boy that could read thoughts).
Clark has made so many mistakes to in the past who could understand the issues he was having. Ultimately Conner made the right choice. Why not help him out? Love Clark and Lois related. Seems like it gets stronger every episode.
*Clark and Lois relationship
Hey Smallville…One Tree Hill beat you to the Hangover episode and they did it much better.
Ain’t that the truth! Last week’s episode was an all time low for the show. (Well after Power and Requiem, that is).
Oh and Doomsday and the exploding baby episode ranks down there as well.
I liked the light tone in last week’s Hangover ep; it got a bit clusmy at times (who’d ever think Oliver was a real showgirl? Did that mobster need glasses?) but it was fun to see the cast cut loose after so much darkness. This week it was return to familiar ground; will we see Smallville High again? Will Connor hook up with the new Wall of Wonder teens working at the Torch?
I grow tired of Evil Lionel; he can’t hold a candle to the old Lionel and his Shakesperian dramas. Old Lionel had shades of gray; the new Lionel is just plane bad.
My fave part was Lois telling Connor point blank that she was a one woman gal and spoken for by Clark. Lana Lang would have swooned about being torn and conflicted; I’m happy to see Clark with a gal who is his alone, no sharesies with Lex, Whitney and any other fool who happens by. Yep, guess I don’t miss Lana at her she-drama at all.
Whoops, meant Wall of Weird! It’s been too long since we’ve seen Smallville High.
Agreed about Lionel – I’ve had enough of the guy, and I like John Glover. I’m happy that most of the Darkseid stuff has been only hinted at, rather than having endless scenes of diabolical plotting/talking about what will happen, a la Zod and old Lex.
I like how good Smallville’s become at making the weirdness and diabolical plots just part of the characters normal lives — the Tess/Clark comically awkward ‘Uh, hey’ meeting totally worked. The show overdoes it with the comedy music cues, but, heck, it’s fun and the
comedy’s needed.
I liked last week. This week, loved the Connor/Clark moments, but thought the alt/Lionel stuff was overdone. And I’m glad that damned mansion is (mostly) gone — when I saw all the candles I was worried we were back to the overlit Smallville days of Lana bathing with 28,000 candles.
What if they are just changing the shows name from Smallville to Superman. Yes, the Smallville series would be over but the only change (other than the name) would be the shift of becoming Superman to actually being Superman, and see how great he truly becomes. (They are always saying that he has a great destiny… and I want to see it)
Man, I would love to see this cast take on Superman full-time! But I don’t think WB wants that, which is a shame.
I have thought that should have happened a season or two ago. I have liked this season. I don’t believe the WB will go with Superman and I don’t think they would be allowed to with the New Superman movie in the works. Also, the price tag for the actors is probably getting higher year after year.
First, the flight ring was on a much older hand and probably that of Booster Gold. The preview had scenes from at least three upcoming episodes. Second, I loved that they mentioned Dr Helen Bryce from Seasons 2 & 3. She did have a sample of Clark’s blood.
I personally like “Fortune” it was funny and gave us a look a the comedic side of the cast. Though I’m still wondering if Green Arrow will come back to Metropolis. I liked Scion, as always Lois giving a comedic relief even when she’s upset, Puff Diddy and Prince quotes and the Lex-Clark love child bit, hahaha. Lionel was superb and Tess played her hand so well after Lois gave her the tip regarding Al Capone and had her G-Man check things out. Clark is so humble and innocent he’s the type of person I’d love to have near me. I do hope that the REAL Lex makes his come back as himself and not a clone. Let the first Lex-clone the one that Oliver blowed up.
I think Oliver killed the real Lex. That’s why he was also in purgatory with Clark at the start of this season.
Pretty sure Oliver killed one of the many clones and the “real Lex” will come out of hiding. I think they are looking to spin off SuperBoy in his own series, going back to Smallville High.
If that’s true, then Lex being in the void with Clark wouldn’t make any sense.
For the record, it’s Zatanna, not “Zantanna.”
I thought the episode was awesome. the callbacks to previous season were very well done. The conner/Clark fight was fantastic totally reminded me of the Jonathan/Clark fight in season 3. Only this time Clark was in Jonathan’s position. Darkseid appearing infront of Lionel at the end was the icing on the cake.
I loved Tess and Lois working together. they’re always awesome in scenes together.
Also, I understand that you’re saying about the red K, but it was used in a very different way. It didn’t just bring out the uninhibited side of Conner, it brought out the Lex in him. He was terrifying TBH
Great episode!
I actually quite enjoyed this episode AND last week’s episode. I think it’s always nice when Smallville takes a break from being serious and does a light fun episode. Even though this episode was a little cliched I still thought it was good. It took me forever to realize that Conner would end up being Superboy so I was greatly surprised when it finally dawned on me and then felt stupid for taking so long to figure it out. Lol. I think it makes sense that Clark would be a father figure to Conner. This isn’t the Clark from earlier in the season who was full of doubt. This is a different, more mature Clark so I think it makes senses for him to want to be his father figure.
As for the previews for the last five episodes did anyone else wonder who it is that dies? They attend a funeral. And did anyone else squeal like a little girl when they saw Jonathan even if he was beating Clark(?) with kryptonite?? (I wasn’t sure if it was Clark can someone please tell me if it was or wasn’t Clark. Thank you.)I can’t wait for it to come back on! I wonder what Darksied will do with Lionel??
I wonder if the funeral will take place in the alternate world- I’m assuming we are going back there because we saw Clark luthor and Tess getting all close in the preview
Agreed! That’s also why Jonathan’s beating up Clark. Well, a Clark anyway. It’s happening on Earth 2, and I hope it’s being used as a way to show us what a full-on Darkseid invasion and takeover would be like.
That does make sense but if it was on Earth 2 wouldn’t have been devoid of color? It was very bright and sunny at the funeral so I don’t think it was the alternate world. I think it was Earth 1. But I could very well be wrong. Lol.
