'American Idol': David Cook's 'Don't You (Forget About Me)' cover named cast-off song

idol-david-cookImage Credit: Frank MIcelotta/FoxSo, looks like every contestant who doesn’t win the 10th season of American Idol will hate The Breakfast Club: David Cook’s rep has announced that Simon Fuller has chosen the season 7 winner’s cover of Simple Minds’ 1985 hit “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” as this season’s farewell song. But this is good, good news, for several reasons: 1) My mother, a reported Cougar 4 Cook, will be happy every Thursday night, no matter who goes home, 2) This sounds much, much better than “Celebrate Me Home,” and 3) It’s a step in ensuring that we never forget about David Cook (at least this season), giving him some extra press for his upcoming sophomore album (out in May), which every Archie-hater like me is hoping catapults to the top of the charts. Come on, watch this and try to tell me the nice-guy Idol winner doesn’t deserve at least Daughtry levels of success!

You can listen to Cook’s version of the song — which, judging by his covers of “Hello” and “Always Be My Baby” during his Idol run, will be awesomely unique — if you pre-order the singer’s upcoming album. (The song will be available on iTunes on March 8.) Here’s the problem: I’m a cheap bastard who needs to afford rent this month, so I’m holding off on luxury items. So, to you hardcore Cook fans out there (Mom), let us know: Will Cook’s cover be the next “Bad Day” or the next “Leave Right Now”? (It certainly has a kinder title than the latter.) And another reason to rejoice: Cook’s rep confirmed to EW that the singer will perform not once, but twice on the Idol stage this season!

Love David Cook. Too bad I don’t watch Idol anymore.

    • yawn

You’re missing out on some great talent.

      • Amy

Yay!!! David Cook I LOVE HIM.

      • Robert

Love Cook, best idol and musician out here! Loved his first CD and preordered the second, it will be even more amazing! Love him so much!

    • Floopa Bambers

      paint-by-numbers remake. pointless.

      • Kristen

From the info I’ve read, Simon Fuller asked Cook to do a “reverential” cover – thus he didn’t have much choice; still it’s a good promo for his original music when it comes out soon

      • @Floopa Bambers

        your comment is pointless.

I love David Cook and glad that he’s getting some love out there. His first CD was so great, that I have to wonder, why isn’t he a bigger star?

    • calistoga

WHY is he a bigger star? Same reason Kris Allen isn’t… They have the talent, but not that “killer” instinct. They are Mr. Nice Guys! Maybe it’s a guy-thing, because Kelly and Carrie don’t appear to be demanding diva’s.

      • Lil

Nice guys is what they are. If they tried to change it to come across as some badass it would be fake and harmful. Better to stick with what you are and keep the fans that like you that way. Cause the fans who like the badboys would not be fooled by a sudden change and the media would be brutal. David’s career is fine.

      • jennrae

I agree with Lil, David’s career is fine. You don’t have to have Justin Beiber’s fans to be successful. He’s solid and will probably work in the music business for as long as he wants to.

      • MsDaisy

Cause teen and pre-teen girls spend their $$ on Justin Bieber.

      • tommytomted

David Cook is a much bigger star than Kris Allen. I like them both but Cook has outsold Allen by 20 to 1.

    • mama

Cook’s first CD was amazing and full of emotions… I still can’t get “Permanent” out of my head.

Not watching this year… can’t stand the YOU ARE GREAT judges who do very little constructive criticizing. Catch some of the performances on You Tube afterwards… There are some good singers in the group.

  • Lori

For those that want to listen to the song, it is currently on david’s official youtube page.

  • Brandon

I Loved the first CD. Almost enough to order it sight unheard. Almost. I will probably just wait till I get a little listen first. Maybe.

  • Bea

Thrilled to have David Cook sing this year’s elimination song for American Idol.
I pre-ordered his album and own this amazing cover.
    David: you rock!

  • Kelly

I wasn’t sure that I was going to like this at the beginning, but damn if it doesn’t get pretty close to awesome by the end. Good to see Cook again and GREAT to read that he’ll be on my TV at least twice this year.

  • Karen

EXACTLY Jenny!! WHY isn’t David a bigger star? He is so great. I think one reason is PR-Idol doesn’t seem to promote their winners. It is bad that David’s 1st tour was only held at colleges-which you had to be a student or know someone that is- or at a casino. Even in KC, his concert was at a casino that held 1700. There were so many of us in line and didn’t get tickets as it sold out so fast! Could have easily gone to the Sprint Center in his home town for sure!

    • Kristi

I completely agree. He needs to tour with someone bigger so more people can hear him. He is awesome live but only his fans get to hear him because he tours alone.

      • VT

Complete agreement about the PR remark. They released BarbaSol, but no video was made (a live one would have been the BEST) David toured colleges & smaller venues because he said when he was in college, if bands played there it was GREAT & cheap, plus him & the Anthemic had only been a band for like a month or so, even though he already knew 2 of the members. He wanted to make sure that they were clicking as a band before going on to a bigger venue. They definitely started clicking. I saw him in KC, it was fantastic, but after what I saw on YouTube in later concerts, ‘WOW’. Makes me wonder what he’s going to do this time. And he didn’t tour alone. I saw him with Ryan Starr & he also had others too when Ryan wasn’t there. He also deserves to be the headliner. You’d agree if you’re ever lucky enough to see him. I’m truly sorry you didn’t.

  • calistoga

My Season 7 fave was Michael Johns. Since he didn’t win, I’m so glad it went to his deserving new friend, David Cook. David’s talent takes ANY song and makes it his own. I’m one of David’s cougar fans and wish him the best on his new album.

  • Realist

Nothing will ever top “Bad Day” as the Idol boot song.

    • OC girl

      David Cook totally brought it!

  • SB

worst..idol…ever! He is so overrated. Gag me

    • Paula

      Said the bitter Archie fan.

      • Judy

Oh, SB…you’re forgetting Taylor Hicks and several others. And, yeah, must be a bitter Archie fan. David Cook’s the BEST Idol winner and the most fun to watch live.

      • kristie

        yeah, no kidding.

      • SantaFe

Yep. It’s not DC’s fault that Archie was dropped by Jive.

    • Andrew

Taylor Hicks is by far the worst winner. Blake Lewis, who came in 2nd place, is much more overrated than Davod Cook. I actually like David alot.

  • debbie

Love Cook, best idol and muscian outhere! Loved his first CD and preordered the second it will be more amazing! Love him so much!

  • Robert

This song fits his voice perfectly and is a great boot song. I got a free mp3 when I pre-ordered his new album.

  • Doug

    Cook’s the bomb! Great pick.

    • KENZIE

I agree, I love David Cook he is my favorite winner so far.

  • Ashley Schumacher

YES! David Cook is actually my FAVORITE Idol winner, w/ Carrie Underwood a close second. My favorite non-winner from Idol: Daughtry!

    • jlatino

top 5 idols kelly clarkson, carrie underwood, daughtry, david cook, and dont forget adam lambert

  • Nicki

I like David.. his voice on this song.. not so much. Kinda sucks.
