David Archuleta vlogs about his split from Jive Records, continues to be adorable

How is American Idol runner-up slash human Beanie Baby David Archuleta coping since being dropped from his record label? Apparently, pretty well. Yesterday, the singer posted a video on YouTube in which he addresses the separation — after telling a cute story about celebrating his sister’s birthday and describing his President’s Day trip to Six Flags Magic Mountain, of course. (This kid is 20 years old? Seriously?)

According to Archuleta, “Jive has been changing as a company” — both Sony Music president Barry Weiss and Jeff Fenster, Archuleta’s A&R representative, have left Jive recently. Additionally, notes Archuleta, he’s also changing as an artist, so continuing to work with Jive “just didn’t feel like the right thing now.” Still, he’s optimistic about what might be coming next: “I’m looking forward to the future, what David is going to be giving to you guys!” Aww, there’s that can-do spirit that made us swoon for Archie in ’08! Watch the video for yourself below.  READ FULL STORY »

'Soapdish' remake moving forward. That's depressing and it's expensive -- two words I hate.

soapdishHollywood loves its remakes. It’s a reality we’ve all got to live with. But does that mean we have to accept it? I say, “Hell to the no!” — especially in the light of news that Paramount is going forward with its remake of the 1991 comedy Soapdish, which was first reported last May. This totally underrated gem about the backstage drama at a daytime soap opera does not deserve to have its memory defiled by what could very well be a pale and lackluster update. (Of course, maybe it will be great — because sometimes, on rare occasions, remakes don’t totally suck.) But honestly, can you improve on perfection? Can you improve on a cast that includes Sally Field, Robert Downey Jr. (at his manic best — see clip after the jump), Whoopi Goldberg (once upon a time she was quite a funny lady) and Kevin Kline? When I try to imagine other people playing Celeste Talbert and Jeffrey Anderson, I feel like my brain will literally explode within the next three hours. Tell me, Dish fans, am I overreacting? Message to all 'Real Housewives': Please, stop acting now

real-housewives-actingImage Credit: CBS; NBCListen, I have nothing against any housewives, real or otherwise. It’s a free country, and people in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones, and we’re all just co-astronauts on the big blue starship called Planet Earth. When people are famous in America, they get a lot of opportunities. When people are infamous in America, they usually get even more opportunities, because America is broken. I can’t begrudge people for making silly mistakes. But I can send out a message from the bottom of my heart to all Real Housewives far and wide, from Atlanta to New York, from Orange County to New Jersey, from the new one to the one we’ll never speak of again: Please, ladies, stop trying to act. Taking Multitasking to Task: Mark Harris tries to stop gorging on technology

WALL-E-humansImage Credit: Disney/PixarI’ve decided to go on a diet — but instead of giving up carbs and hiring that scary woman from The Biggest Loser, I’m going to stop gorging on technology

Earlier this year, like a lot of people, I made a resolution to eat less. But with a twist: My resolution is to eat less entertainment. Here’s my new rule: one screen at a time.

Lately, the ways in which you can consume pop culture have been multiplying so rapidly that by the time the alarm clock buzzes, you’re already a 3.0 in a 4.0 world. Press coverage of every technological innovation can sound almost evangelical: We’re always just one handheld device, add-on, or app away from owning the dream gadget that will infinitely broaden our options while somehow streamlining our lives. 'Iron Man 2' and Apple win 2010 Product Placement Awards; Did you notice any egregious stealth advertising?

Tagged:

ironman-osxImage Credit: Jamie BiversProduct placement! Is there a more beautiful phrase in the English language? Not if you work for Apple: The company’s various products appeared in 30 percent of the No. 1 films of 2010. According to the just-released list of Brandcameo Product Placement Award Winners, that qualifies Apple as the most product-placed consumer item of 2010. (So many romantic heroines with feisty MacBooks! So many secret agent dudes with action-ready iPhones!) Meanwhile, Iron Man 2 won the award for most product placement in a single film, with an estimated 64 product placements. That’s roughly one product every two minutes, although since they’re all relatively affordable brands, you can only conclude that Tony Stark is in the lower class of billionaires. (Billionaires: They’re just like us!) READ FULL STORY »

'Tiptoes' is real. Really. Watch the trailer.

Thanks to last night’s Tosh.0‘s “Spoiler Alert” movie segment, the film Tiptoes — which stars Matthew McConaughey as a man worried that the child Kate Beckinsale is about to deliver will be a dwarf like the rest of his family (including, “in the role of a lifetime,” Gary Oldman) — is a popular search term today. Watch the trailer below, along with Daniel Tosh’s synopsis. If Tosh is right, the film does not have the happy ending the preview hints at. I did a quick search through the EW archives, and we appear to have only ever written about this film once in the magazine. Covering the 2004 Sundance Film Festival, where the drama premiered, we reported: “Biggest Meltdown: Tiptoes director Matthew Bright, whose creative differences with the film’s husband-and-wife producers caused him to wish them ‘dead’ and note that one resembled ‘an a–hole with teeth.’” BRILLIANT. Bright has never directed a feature again, but he’s listed as a writer on the reportedly in-the-works adaptation of Fyodor Dostoevsky’s The Idiot, which is rumored to star Twilight‘s Jackson Rathbone. Tiptoes writer Bill Weiner has no credits listed before the film, or after. The movie, should you be so inspired, is available through Netflix. It’s also available on Amazon Instant Video for $9.99, though you might be better off purchasing a used DVD for $0.49. I myself have never seen it, which is shocking considering my love of the craptacular and penchant for finding bad ideas more fascinating than good ones. But before you drop two quarters, make sure you can at least sit through this scene and these ones (tough even with the always awesome Peter Dinklage). I couldn’t.  READ FULL STORY »

Danny Boyle's 'Frankenstein' trailer: Who wants to see Jonny Lee Miller as the Creature?

The Danny Boyle-directed stage production of Frankenstein at London’s National Theatre features actors Jonny Lee Miller and Benedict Cumberbatch alternating roles. One evening, Miller is Victor Frankenstein and Cumberbatch is the Creature; the next, Miller is the Creature and Cumberbatch is Victor Frankenstein. Watching the trailer below in which the actors morph in and out of the characters, I found looking at Jonny Lee Miller as the monster made me sad. He’s just too handsome to be mutilated. (I don’t even want to think about the fetal position I would be lying in right now if that had been Jude Law.) It cuts deeper than seeing Bradley Cooper so unkempt at the start of the Limitless trailer. But at least the payoff with Frankenstein is bound to be greater as we see how that response affects our feelings for the Creature. READ FULL STORY »

Gwyneth Paltrow returns to 'Glee' for a 'Kiss'

Filed under: Glee, Music, Television, TV and tagged: , ,

Matthew Morrison said it for a lot of Gleeks when he told EW in December, “I need some Holly Holliday in my life.” Gwyneth Paltrow is back, as last night’s credits teased, and this time she’s the “sexy sex-ed substitute.” (Please, no Mary Todd Lincoln outfits!) She and Will are clearly going to connect, what with Prince’s “Kiss” and their sultry dance-floor number. “Maybe’s it’s time I learned a little bit about romance,” breathes Holly. “I happen to be an excellent educator,” answers Will. Just kiss the girl, Mr. Schue. READ FULL STORY »

Comic book fans: What are they saying about the slew of new superhero films?

superheroesImage Credit: John Schwartzman; Jay Maidment/Marvel Studios In this week’s issue of Entertainment Weekly, we took a look at the superhero-heavy diet Hollywood is serving up to moviegoers for 2011 and 2012. It’s a regular binge of masked celebs, served with generous helpings of high-profile directors, hand-battered in sequels and reboots and deep-fried to golden crispiness. Most audiences will devour this repast of capes and tights. But what are crime-fighting movie fans with more discriminating tastes expecting?

We asked Ahmad Childress, Managing Editor of Crave Online, a media outlet that oversees such fansites as Super Hero Hype and Film School Rejects, to get his take on what comic book enthusiasts and the diehard fanboy-and-girl communities are saying about the upcoming deluge of villain-pummeling epics.

“The thing that usually polarizes people first is the casting,” Childress says. “That always gets debated to death out of everything.”

'V': Anna apparently has a back-up plan for everything

Filed under: TV and tagged:

VImage Credit: ABCLast night’s episode of V practically felt like a mini-reboot of the whole series. No longer was our beloved rebel gang stuck plotting in the basement. Instead, Erica and Hobbes took an extended espionage vacation, first to Bangkok (where they met with other Fifth Column leaders) and then to Hong Kong (where they pulled an elaborate operation to interrogate a mysterious baby doctor.) Hobbes stole the show here, whether he was showing off his language skills by tossing out some Chinese or initiating some white-hot chemistry with Erica mid-safecrack. READ FULL STORY »
