'Monsters' DVD Giveaway

Categories: Giveaways, Sci-Fi

MonstersSix years ago, alien life forms hitched a ride to Earth on a NASA space probe that crash-landed in Mexico. Before long, a wall spanning the Mexican-American border would be the U.S.’s only protection against invasion.

That’s the premise of Monsters, a sci-fi flick about real illegal aliens — think District 9, but made by a Brit and set in North America — that manages to do a lot despite its tiny budget of $500,000.

Today, the little film that could is out on DVD — and to celebrate its release, EW is giving away 10 copies of Monsters. (You’ll have to provide your own gas masks, unfortunately.) The discs are courtesy of Magnolia and are available while supplies last.

James Franco's battle against the fabric of reality continues with a self-reflexive college course

James-FrancoImage Credit: Bob Charlotte/PR PhotosSometimes it seems like James Franco is juggling a number of projects that is approaching infinity. Like a undefeatable hydra of productivity, each time we write about a new film, TV show, art project, book, class, mustache, soap opera, underwater re-enactment of the third season finale of Dynasty, James Franco look-a-like contest, or conjoined-twin separation surgery he’s involved in, two more career aspirations spring up to take its place. It’s reached the point that even posts about how many posts there are about how many projects Franco has are piling up like PhD coursework. You win, James: We’re meta-exhausted.

His latest venture, according to Movieline, is a class at Columbia College Hollywood titled Master Class: Editing James Franco… with James Franco, in which 12 lucky students will build a half-hour documentary about Franco, from footage provided by Franco, and under the occasional supervision of Franco. GLAAD slams 'SNL' sketch for being transphobic

Saturday Night Live has come under fire for its last week’s “Estro-Maxx” mock commercial, which GLAAD says was a “dangerous and blatantly anti-transgender segment… the punch line of which was the lives of countless transgender people across the country.” NBC didn’t respond to our request for comment. ABC Family announces three new shows, and its love for 'Caroline in the City'

Categories: Television

Nine-LivesImage Credit: Eric McCandless/ABC Family; Angela Weiss/Getty ImagesYou know you’re getting old when the casting you’re most excited about on an ABC Family series is the MOM. But still, it’s Caroline in the City‘s Amy Pietz, people. She’s co-starring in The Nine Lives of Chloe King (pictured), based on the book series by Celia Thomson. She’s a single mother whose teen daughter Chloe (The Gates‘ Skyler Samuels) is looking forward to celebrating her birthday — “until she starts developing heightened abilities and discovers she’s being pursued by a mysterious figure,” the synopsis says. “Chloe soon learns she’s part of an ancient race which has been hunted by human assassins for millennia — and that she may be their only hope for ultimate survival.” I’ve never read these books, but in my mind, Pietz is Lorelai Gilmore meets Joyce Summers.

ABC Family execs must be serious Caroline in the City fans, because Lea Thompson plays a mom in the other hour drama going to series, Switched at Birth. READ FULL STORY »

Clip du jour: Interpretive dance!

Interpretive dance just got a little more literal, thanks to the game “Interpretive Dance” on the new BBC 2 show Fast and Loose. In it, comedian David Armand acts out the lyrics to a pop song, and people have to guess what he’s miming. Dorky, amazing, hilarious, British — I’m gonna go buy a scratch-off, because today is my lucky day. READ FULL STORY »

Stephen King's 'The Stand': Our wish list cast includes Josh Brolin, an Olsen sister, and... Stephen Colbert?

The-StandImage Credit: Marvel EntertainmentA new film version of Stephen King’s end-of-the-world survival epic The Stand has just been announced, so now’s the time to pray to the movie gods for who we’d like to see in it.

This is a tough one, because the 1994 ABC mini-series — while looking a little cheap (because it was network television) and being a little toothless (because… it was network television) — was exceptionally well cast: Gary Sinise as the scrappy Texan who’s the first to encounter the disease that will wipe out 99 percent of humanity; one-time teen icon Molly Ringwald as the pregnant survivor unsure if her child will do the same; Rob Lowe as the deaf-mute Nick Andros following visions through an empty world; and the mystical badass Anti-Christ known as Randall Flagg, played by Jamey Sheridan (now best known for Law & Order: Criminal Intent and NBC’s Trauma).

The trend in movies is that concept is the star, not the actors. King’s name and his apocalyptic story, which has been a pop-culture touchstone since 1978, will be the biggest draw. So don’t expect the whole cast of Ocean’s 11 in this new version of The Stand. But maybe some of them. Here’s my wish list (although, be warned, some plotline spoilers follow):

Suspender-bodice gowns: Sexy or annoying?

Vanity-FairVanity Fair‘s annual Hollywood issue has arrived (here’s a larger version), and I’m too distracted by Olivia Wilde’s gown to even begin to address why Rashida Jones would be bottle-feeding an animal and Robert Duvall is serving as bartender. Does Wilde have an amazing body? Yes. But should she be wearing a gown that makes January Jones’ Golden Globes dress seem reserved? No. I think we need to band together now to stop these suspender-bodice gowns from becoming an epidemic. (Assuming enough people with bodies like Wilde and Jones actually exist to make that even a figurative possibility.) If a gown just barely covers your nipple, you should not be wearing it. See something, say something, people. Let’s put it to a vote below. Note: If you choose “sexy,” it means you want to see more actresses wearing this look. If you choose “annoying,” it means even if you think their bodies are stunning, you want the inappropriate trend to stop now. READ FULL STORY »

Justin Bieber teaches David Letterman about the 'Twitter device'

In the cold opening to last night’s Late Show with David Letterman, an awkward green-room encounter between the host and guest, Justin Bieber, culminated with the teenage sensation sheepishly admitting to Dave’s suspicion when he said, “Yeah — you have no idea who I am, do you?” It was a funny bit that took advantage of the generation(s) gap between the two, allowing Letterman to get away with later asking, “Do you use the Twitter device?” The Twitter device? At least he didn’t go on to describe the internet as a series of tubes. READ FULL STORY »
