DirectTV Celebrity Beach Bowl names Matthew Morrison and A-Rod assistant coaches. That's fair.

Matthew-Morrison-Alex-RodriguezImage Credit: Chris Hatcher/PR Photos; Janet Mayer/PR PhotosI don’t have DirecTV, but that doesn’t stop me from marveling each year at the announcement of its roster for its annual Celebrity Beach Bowl. The fifth no-holds-barred flag football game will take place Saturday in Dallas in a specially constructed 10,000 seat stadium, complete with a regulation size sand-filled football field. Per the release, the festivities, which kick off with an hour-long pre-game show at 1:30 p.m. CT, feature a first: Glee‘s Matthew Morrison and New York Yankee Alex Rodriguez have been tapped as “celebrity assistant coaches” to the real coaches, the New York Giants’ Eli Manning and the Cleveland Browns’ Colt McCoy. Warren Moon and Jesse Palmer will serve as quarterbacks, and in addition to other NFL greats, we’ll see the following stars suit up (and by that, I assume we mean strip down): Josh Duhamel, Chace Crawford, Kellan Lutz, Joe Manganiello, Matt Bomer, Chord Overstreet, Kevin Dillon, Jerry Ferrara, Hunter Parrish, Michael B. Jordan, Dominic Fumusa, Brie Larson, and Marisa Miller. The game and post-show concert by Maroon 5 will air live on DirecTV’s The 101 Network, and, for the first time ever, will also be broadcast in 3D on DirecTV’s n3D powered by Panasonic. Additionally, the game will be broadcast on all of Fox Sports Network’s Regional Sports Networks and affiliates and DirecTV’s Regional Sports Networks, more than 25 networks in total.

All I can say is, if I had to cast a game of touch football, Duhamel and Manganiello would definitely be playing. Also, I realize this is football and not baseball, but I would still be pissed if my assistant coach was Morrison instead of A-Rod.

'The Daily': Rupert Murdoch launches iPad-only newspaper

The future has arrived … maybe. Today, Rupert Murdoch launched his new iPad-only newspaper, The Daily. It’s an expensive gamble — Murdoch has hired a staff of roughly 100 journalists (including former Page Six gossipmonger Richard Johnson) to produce a fully-digital news app. The Daily is free for the first two weeks, and then they start charging: $.99 per week, or $39.99 for a full year. That’s less expensive than the Murdoch-owned Wall Street Journal (which currently charges over $100 for a full year). It is, however, more expensive than $0, the highest amount most consumers currently seem willing to pay for news content in our brave digital age. So is The Daily worth the price? READ FULL STORY »

Korean dramas on Hulu: Why I'm addicted

Kkot-Boda-NamjaImage Credit: KBSGrowing up, I always had a strong hatred toward Korean dramas. My parents would rent a big stack of them on VHS from Atlanta’s Koreatown and watch them on Friday nights while munching on dried squid snacks. Maybe it was a kind of Pavlovian response on my part — the smell of stinky squid forever associated with the sound of Korean actors speaking a language I only barely understand — or the fact that my parents watching their stories meant no TGIF lineup for me, but I never gave Korean soap operas, or K-dramas, a chance until recently.

A non-Korean American friend of mine had been telling me for a while that K-dramas on Hulu were crazily addictive and that we should get addicted together. I ignored her recommendation for weeks, until one day after an epic DVR and Netflix binge, I was really lacking any other TV options. I did a Hulu search for “Korean Drama.” I settled on one called Boys before Flowers, based solely on the title, and my friend was right — after two episodes, I was hooked. READ FULL STORY »

Jim Cantore reacting to thunder snow: The only thing about this storm we're not over

Yes, Chicago has gotten nailed by this latest winter storm, but in my eyes, the Windy City has one thing going for it: It’s got Jim Cantore. The Weather Channel has reporters bundled up all over the place, but Cantore is by far the most entertaining, as we were reminded again last night when he got surprised by thunder snow. Watch it below.

If you’ve been following this storm on The Weather Channel or your local news, describe the best moment you’ve witnessed. Also, confess the guilt you feel for being disappointed every time no one crossing the street behind a reporter falls. Karma — it’s why I’m working from home today. READ FULL STORY »

'SNL' books Russell Brand and Chris Brown for Feb. 12: Should show go there?

Russell-Brand-Chris-BrownImage Credit: Glenn Harris/PR Photos; Bob Charlotte/PR PhotosRussell Brand and Chris Brown are set to make their Saturday Night Live debuts on Feb. 12, NBC has announced. Brand will serve as host, and Brown as the musical guest. Humor is one way to diffuse celebrity scandals, but do you want the show to go there with Brown, or should he just perform his two songs and stay out of sketches and shorts? My gut tells me the latter: If he just sings, the audience can compartmentalize. He’s a singer, he’s singing. But if he starts “acting,” then we start thinking… Would the show be selling out if they didn’t address his troubled past? But then again, is there a way for them to actually do that tastefully? Assault isn’t something to laugh it. It’s not like we want to see a sketch centered on him graduating from his court-ordered course on domestic violence. He and Brand could start a celebrity Twitter war, but then, oops!, the one Brown apologized for recently was considered homophobic. Also not funny.

So what do you say: Should Brown just sing? Or are you ready for him to make you laugh? If so, how? My best idea would be a sketch with the cast impersonating other famous musicians with pasts to overcome auditioning to collaborate with Justin Bieber on a track on his next album (like Brown is doing). But it still just feels… gross. Your thoughts?

Quick! Who is this couple kissing by the water lilies?

Midnight-in-ParisImage Credit: Roger Arpajou

When asked to identify the embracing couple in this shot — from Woody Allen’s upcoming film Midnight in Paris, which has just been announced as the opening night film of the 2011 Cannes Film Festival (running May 11-22) — a quick, unscientific survey of the EW staff reveals that pretty much everyone can identify the man on the left as…  READ FULL STORY »

'Roommate' star Leighton Meester warns you about touching her s–––.

Back in college, I got into a loud, scary, unnecessary fight with my roommate after she caught me borrowing a headband without asking. And, as is typical of non-confrontational 19-year-olds who live mere feet from one another, we managed to patch up the whole thing over email, and never spoke about it again. But perhaps I could have avoided the whole argument to begin with had I consulted Leighton Meester’s new CollegeHumor video pegged to her film out Friday, The Roommate: “Don’t Touch My S— (with Leighton Meester).”: “I’m here with a message about an issue that’s very close to my heart. An issue that affects me and millions like me every day. My message is simple: Don’t touch my s—,” says Meester in the faux-PSA, which is obviously NSFW.

Clip du jour: 'Fringe' as 'Firefly,' 'Doctor Who' as 'CSI: Miami'

A Fringe/Firefly mash-up could cause a tear in the fabric of the cult TV nerdiverse, so watch this at your own risk. If you somehow survive, there’s a Doctor Who/CSI: Miami recut, too, which is marginally less geeky but just as excellent. READ FULL STORY »

'V': Should Tyler just die already?

Categories: V

V-Unholy-MitchellImage Credit: Jack Rowand/ABCThe very first scene of last night’s episode of V teased us with the possible death of Tyler. (This continues a trend that began with the season premiere, when Tyler’s face melted and there was much rejoicing, but alas, it was only a dream.) Three Peace Ambassadors had been murdered and hung upside-down, with their faces covered. Erica naturally flipped out, because Tyler’s a Peace Ambassador. She uncovered the first dead guy’s face. Not Tyler. Dead guy #2: Also not Tyler. Could it be Dead Guy #3? (Oh, pleasepleaseplease.) Nope, he wasn’t Tyler either. And so, the boy with Emo-Spider-Man hair lived to torment another day.
