Vanity Fair's Top 40 Hollywood earners include zero of this year's Oscar acting nominees: Are we surprised?

Johnny-Depp-CameronImage Credit: Michael Tullberg/Getty Images; Juan Naharro GimeneJames Cameron tops Vanity Fair‘s carefully calculated list of Hollywood’s Top 40 earners in 2010, with an estimated $257 million (all but $4 million of it tied to Avatar, and that does not include $50 million of Avatar money from 2009). Johnny Depp comes in at No. 2 with an estimated $100 million comprised primarily of his paychecks for Alice in Wonderland, the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film, and The Tourist. Check out the full list – limited to creative types (stars, directors, and producers) and the money they earned from movies — and tell us what you find interesting. It’s not really a surprise — we all know Oscar noms don’t typically align with blockbusters — but none of this year’s Oscar acting nominees make the cut.

TLC's 'Outrageous Kid Parties': A celebration of excess (that I'll probably watch)

Modern-Family-clownImage Credit: Adam Larkey/ABCMy best birthday ever took place at a Jungle Jim’s Playland in San Antonio, which in retrospect was actually a pretty shady place. But when I was seven years old, I loved it. It was simple, age-appropriate fun that I wouldn’t trade for the world even now. That’s why my soul died a little when I read about TLC’s new (efficiently titled) new show, Outrageous Kid Parties. READ FULL STORY »

'The Simpsons': Do all of the McBain clips add up to a killer action movie?

Categories: Television, The Simpsons

Are the producers of The Simpsons even sneakier than we thought? Consider the following video evidence, which stitches together all of those ’90s Simpsons clips featuring Rainier Wolfcastle in action as McBain, the Arnold Schwarzenegger/Bruce Willis-spoofing movie action hero. Turns out, they kinda-sorta add up to a short film in which McBain butts heads with his by-the-book boss (“Bye, book,” he declares after literally shooting the captain’s book), avenges the death of his partner (who was just two days away from retiring and sailing away with his wife on their newly christened boat, The Live-4-Ever!) by taking down Senator Mendoza (who’s been moonlighting as the head of an international drug cartel!), and gets the girl (“Right now, I’m thinking of holding another meeting… in bed”). So, was this part of an ancient secret master plan that is only now coming to light? READ FULL STORY »

Farrah Fawcett's red swimsuit on display at Smithsonian. What pop culture-centric exhibits are you dying to see?

TV-Movie-PropsImage Credit: Mario Perez/ABC; Everett CollectionSo Farrah Fawcett’s iconic red swimsuit went on display in the Smithsonian today, which would have been her 64th birthday. This is awesome for all sorts of reasons — mainly because it gives me hope that there are swimsuits out there somewhere that manage to not get tangled and destroyed in the dryer just weeks after you buy them. But, also, because nothing quite matches the glee every pop culture addict feels when they recognize some of their favorite TV/movie paraphernalia from mere feet away. It’s the best nostalgia high you could ask for, and the closest you can get to starring in the TV/movie itself. So, PopWatchers, I ask: What pop culture-centric exhibits would you love to see at the Smithsonian? READ FULL STORY »

'Harry's Law' vs. 'Hawaii Five-0' vs. 'Castle': Which will you choose?

Next Monday, Feb. 7, will mark the first time NBC’s Harry’s Law will go head-to-head with both a new episode of CBS’ Hawaii Five-0 and a new episode of ABC’s Castle. NBC has an interesting/confusing plan of attack — the “Wave” promo embedded below for Harry’s Law that made me think Hawaii Five-0 was its lead-in until I remembered they’re on different networks in the same 10 p.m. time slot. So what is NBC trying to do here? Say if you like that other show you’ve been watching on that other network, you’ll love this new show on this one? Make us think that we should watch Hawaii Five-0 and DVR Harry’s Law to play right after it? Or simply remind us that Hawaii Five-O is also on?  READ FULL STORY »

'Never Say Never' promo: Professor Sitch and Pauly D catch Bieber Fever

MTV fans, brace yourselves. In an undeniably great cross-promotional move from the MTV family, the network has solicited the coiffed kids from Jersey Shore to promote Justin Bieber’s upcoming biographical 3-D flick, Never Say Never. Over the past week, promo spots for the MTV Films-produced movie featuring Shore staples Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino and DJ Pauly D have aired during their primetime lineup.

The commercials themselves, dare I say, are pretty entertaining. Clad in glasses, a scholarly scarf, a saucy open-chested dress shirt, and a characteristically slick ‘do, Uncle Sitch is rockin’ the professor look. So much so, that after the first 30 seconds, I imagine a bronzed, big-busted “student” might come in and teach him a lesson. Oddly, in enters Justin Bieber. Disappointed? Kind of. READ FULL STORY »

'American Idol' producers issuing an apology for Steven Tyler's 'outrageous behavior'

Ryan Seacrest said on the radio today that American Idol will be issuing an apology tonight for Steven Tyler’s “outrageous behavior.” The way Seacrest talked about it made it sound like the set-up for an exhausting Idol “joke,” perhaps for Tyler’s endlessly strange facial expressions. I can’t unsee them, Idol, but I don’t feel like I need an apology. Listen for yourselves: READ FULL STORY »
