Anne-Hathaway-Oscar-dress6

'Smallville': Superman and Lois throw a party, get a 'Hangover'

Smallville-Welling-FortuneImage Credit: Jack Rowand/The CWLast week, Smallville managed a mash-up of Date Night and Seven to produce a creepy rom-com outing that riffed on the themes of identity, secret and otherwise. In last night’s episode, the superhero serial went Hollywood Vegas, blending everything from The Hangover to Casino to tell a story in which an awkwardly conjoined bachelor/bachelorette party for Clark and Lois went horribly awry thanks to a gift of magically roofied champagne provided by pranky witch (and sadly off-screen) Zantanna. Some may say: “Clever!” Others may say: “Contrived!” I was always amused, thanks to a cast of actors having playful fun with — and finding the requisite poignancy in — a gonzo story about relationship jitters and wedding anxieties… even if I was left wanting to see the storytelling road not taken, suggested by Lois’ early line: “I thought I would be spending the entire night cuffed to a blow up doll while wearing a dog collar.” Woof! Your Oscars party: What's for dinner?

Filed under: Food and Drink, Movies and tagged: , ,

Social-NetworkImage Credit: Merrick MortonYou’ve seen all the movies, you’ve filled out your ballot, but there’s still one thing to prepare before Sunday’s Oscars: The meal. And though in previous years it’s been easy to come up with drinks and a menu inspired by the Best Picture nominees — milk in 2010 for Inglourious Basterds, milk in 2009 for Milk, and, er, milkshakes in 2008 for There Will Be Blood — I’m coming up a bit empty this year. Last year, we planned blueberry pie for Avatar, some football-approved hot wings for The Blind Side, and a nice mini-flask of vodka for Up in the Air. What’s there to do with a film like Black Swan, where the food theme is… nothing? Or Inception, a movie that makes your stomach feel less hungry and more nauseous? READ FULL STORY »

James Van Der Beek talks Ke$ha, killing unicorns, and playing himself

James Van Der Beek may have finally discovered his greatest role: James Van Der Beek. Consider the evidence. He made us laugh last month with the Funny or Die “Van Der Week” videos. Today, he co-stars in Ke$ha’s new “Blow” music video as a tuxedo-clad, laser-toting version of himself. And he was recently cast in the comedy pilot Don’t Trust the Bitch in Apt. 23 as a former teen heartthrob named James Van Der Beek. We talked to the ex-Dawson’s Creek star about unicorns, getting beheaded, and the difference between himself and “himself.”

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: What was your reaction when you were pitched the idea of shooting unicorns with lasers?
JAMES VAN DER BEEK: I’ve been on this kick in the last year or so of whatever’s being offered — no matter how off the wall — if it sounds fun, just saying yes. The pitch is, “Unicorns and lasers and a James Bond tuxedo?” I just said, “Why not?” READ FULL STORY »

There's something about 'There's Something About Mary': PopWatch Rewind looks back at the Farrelly Brothers' biggest hit

This weekend, Peter and Bobby Farrelly direct the husbands-on-a-break comedy Hall Pass. We decided to look back on the movie that brought the Farrellys’ particular brand of feel-good gross-out humor into the American zeitgeist. There’s Something About Mary was the sleeper hit of 1998, spending most of the summer slowly rising higher on the box office top 10. It kickstarted the careers of stars Cameron Diaz and Ben Stiller. But 12 years later, has the movie aged well?

Keith Staskiewicz: This movie really makes you realize that there is a big difference between being “offensive” and being truly offensive. Sure, there’s endless political incorrectness and gross-out visual gags, but there’s an actual heart behind it. Now, look at something like The Ugly Truth or Bride Wars. There’s certainly less, um, bodily effluvia, but at their cores, those movies are as morally blackened and shriveled as Mr. Burns’ heart. There’s a certain joy in a Farrelly Brothers movie that makes you realize just how mean-spirited a lot of rom-coms actually are. READ FULL STORY »

Jeffrey Tambor departs 'La Cage aux Folles'

Filed under: News and tagged:

Jeffrey Tambor (Arrested Development, The Larry Sanders Show) has withdrawn from the current Broadway revival of La Cage aux Folles. Six-time Emmy nominee Tambor, who replaced Kelsey Grammer in the role of nightclub emcee Georges a little over a week ago, “was experiencing complications from recent hip surgery,” wrote the show’s producers in an official statement. “The pain and the challenge of performing in a musical eight times a week proved to be too physically demanding. We respect his talent enormously and regretfully accept his withdrawal from the production.” Understudy Chris Hoch filled in for Tambor on Feb. 25, and a permanent replacement will be announced soon.

Bill Murray on why the 'Ghostbusters 3' script is gathering dust: Blame 'Ghostbusters 2'

Filed under: Movies and tagged: ,

bill-murrayImage Credit: Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic.comThe song and dance has gone on for more than a decade: They’re going to make Ghostbusters 3! Bill Murray’s not interested. They’re going to relaunch the Ghostbusters with all new actors! All new actors? Why? They’re going to make another Ghostbusters with the original guys, but kill off Peter Venkman? Yeah, thanks, but I already saw ‘Zombieland.’ They’re finally going to make this movie, with the old guys handing the proton packs to a new generation of Ghostbusters! Great. Fine. Has anyone heard from Murray since the AT&T Pro-am?

Actually, Murray still hasn’t read the most current version of the Ghostbusters 3 script. He told Howard Stern this week that it’s collecting dust somewhere nearby, but he also hinted at the reason that he’s been so elusive and noncommittal about resurrecting the franchise. READ FULL STORY »

Clip du Jour: A fake trailer for a super-dark 'Archie Comics' movie I'd totally see

RiverdaleIt turns out that beneath its sunny, “gee-whiz!” exterior, Riverdale — the fictional home of clean-cut comic characters Archie Andrews, Veronica Lodge, and Betty Cooper, among others — is a den of sin…at least, according to the following fan-made trailer for a fake movie called Riverdale, which may best be described as “Archie meets Skins meets Requiem for a Dream.” But don’t think that means the clip is some lame parody — as a matter of fact, it’s got impressively high production values and an interesting, non-jokey tone (though much of it will make you laugh out loud, especially if you were ever an Archie fan). If Riverdale were made into a full-length motion picture, I’d definitely check it out on its opening weekend. See for yourself:  READ FULL STORY »

'The Last Unicorn' DVD/Blu-ray Giveaway -- plus, two clips from the movie

Tagged: ,

Schmendrick. Lady Amalthea. Molly Grue. The Red Bull. (No, not that Red Bull.) If these names mean anything to you, then chances are that once upon a time, you fell in love with The Last Unicorn, a gentle, Rankin/Bass-produced animated movie from the early ’80s that features the voices of Mia Farrow, Alan Arkin, Angela Lansbury, and Jeff Bridges.

As Ke$ha’s new video proved today, the world is no longer safe for unicorns. (Why can’t Ke$ha be more like that nice Mariah?) But at least The Last Unicorn has just been released in a DVD/Blu-ray combo pack. And, oh yeah, we’ve got 10 of them to give away to lucky EW.com readers. They’re courtesy of Lionsgate and available while supplies last. To whet your appetite and refresh your memory, here are two clips from the film: READ FULL STORY »

Has Charlie Sheen ruined Charlie Harper?

Sheen-SplitImage Credit: Greg Gayne/CBS; PacificCoastNews.comCharlie Sheen is well aware of how much Two and a Half Men fans have always loved his performance as playboy Charlie Harper, which has earned him four Emmy nominations. Personally, I haven’t watched first-run episodes in a couple of seasons, but as recently as a few weeks ago, I found myself watching a repeat in syndication and laughing out loud. Yes, Sheen’s problems were in the news, but to me, he was still Charlie Harper — the lovable cad. It wasn’t until his most recent rants that I started hearing Charlie Sheen‘s voice instead of Charlie Harper’s; the actor and the character have finally become separate.  READ FULL STORY »
