Gwyneth Paltrow, Mandy Moore, Zachary Levi all set to sing at the Oscars

country-strong-soundtrackImage Credit: Scott GarfieldGwyneth Paltrow will sing “Coming Home” from Country Strong at the Oscars, the Motion Picture Academy announced today. Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi, accompanied by Alan Menken, will sing “I See the Light” from Tangled, Randy Newman will sing We Belong Together from Toy Story 3, and A.R. Rahman and Florence Welch will sing “If I Rise,” from 127 Hours.

Paltrow demonstrated her live-performance chops on the CMAs, but if I’m gonna watch the GOOP scion warble on television, I prefer Glee‘s Fake Substitute Teacher Singing Gwyneth to Country Strong‘s Fake Country Star Singing Gwyneth. Still, the Chuck fan in me is secretly really excited to see Zachary Levi perform, so it all comes out in the wash, or whatever metaphor means “I know I’ll watch the whole thing anyway.” READ FULL STORY »

Spot Inspection: What's the most-played 'Glee' song on your iPod?

Watching the sneak peek of the Warblers’ cover of Destiny’s Child’s “Bills, Bills, Bills” from this Sunday’s post-Super Bowl episode (embedded below), I had two thoughts: Thank goodness Will didn’t sing this (I envision a lot of Matthew Morrison’s signature spin move), and I’m buying that on iTunes (done). That made wonder, what’s the most played Glee song on your iPod? I’ve got one Glee song in my Top 25 most played — “Bust Your Windows.” The rest of my Glee Top 10, in order: ”Teenage Dream,” “Defying Gravity,” and “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” (tie), “Last Christmas,” “Take a Bow,” “Hey, Soul Sister,” “No Air,” “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” and “Hello.” What’s interesting: Aside from the Christmas songs, the Glee covers of those tracks were the first versions I actually purchased for my iPod. I’m not saying they’re better than the original, but that if I don’t already have a song that I like on my iPod, I’m more likely to buy the Glee version when it reminds me of it. That happen to anyone else? READ FULL STORY »

Justin Bieber trades places with Jon Stewart, raps for Sean Kingston

Justin Bieber channeled Jon Stewart on The Daily Show last night, assuming the anchor desk in a Vice Versa homage (and an attempt to promote Bieber’s upcoming movie). Is it weird that Bieber’s Stewart is better than Stewart’s Bieber? READ FULL STORY »

Conan stages Lingerie Puppy Bowl

Conan O’Brien hosted the Lingerie Puppy Bowl last night, and if you thought the idea of dogs with eyebrows was a little much, wait until you see a golden retriever puppy with human-like breasts. Also, one of the puppies is in leather-y bondage gear. It’s unsettling and adorable! READ FULL STORY »

James Franco isn’t the only A-lister who could be coming to Broadway this fall

Kiera-Franco-Berry-stageImage Credit: PR Photos; Jon Kopaloff/FilmMagic.com; Jon Furniss/WireImage.comThere have been rumors for months that James Franco is on his way to Broadway, and the Oscar host said last week that he hopes the upcoming Nicole Kidman-led revival of Tennessee Williams’ Sweet Bird of Youth will be his next project. (When contacted by EW, the show’s rep could only confirm that Franco might be headed to the Great White Way this fall). Am I shocked and excited? If anything James Franco decides to do still surprises you, you must also get a little rush when the sun rises or your toilet flushes, yet I trust him to do a bit more than just an impression of Paul Newman (who originated the role of gigolo Chance Wayne on Broadway in 1959). So yeah, I’m keen. READ FULL STORY »

Howard Stern calls Jay Leno 'horrible' on Letterman

Howard Stern was on The Late Show last night, talking smack about Jay Leno and gushing about how much he loves David Letterman. “Jay is horrible, right?” he said, to loud cheers from the audience. He called Leno talentless and teased Paul Shaffer about being “complacent.” Yipes! READ FULL STORY »

Big Shill Final: The Progressive Insurance Lady vs. Pillsbury Doughboy. Let's get it on!

Big-Shill-Final-2If there was any doubt about the bonafides of our two Big Shill finalists, it was erased by their convincing Final Four victories over two advertising powerhouses from the old school. Flo the Progressive Insurance Lady treated the Budweiser Clydesdales worse than the poor pony at the end of True Grit, clinching Flo’s spot in the final by more than 41 percentage points. And the Pillsbury Doughboy just kept giggling creepily while Mrs. Butterworth — sweet ol’ Mrs. Butterworth — attempted to repeatedly tap-out during his 50 point rout. READ FULL STORY »

'American Idol' exclusive behind-the-scenes report from L.A.: Your audition round burning questions answered!

american-idolImage Credit: Michael Becker/FoxFor last month’s EW cover story on the new team behind the judging table at American Idol, I was invited by Fox to exclusively observe the Los Angeles auditions last November. During the 30-or-so minutes I got to sit amid the small village of cables, cameras, lights, monitors, and crew surrounding the makeshift Idol audition stage, I saw 13 people sing. Five of them, including Tim “I had a crush on J. Lo when I was in the 6th grade” Halperin, were sent to Hollywood, exactly as many as were seen getting golden tickets during last night’s Los Angeles audition episode. So, were the L.A. tryouts really as awful as they seemed on TV? In a word, no.  READ FULL STORY »

'30 Rock': What a surprise!

30-Rock-Brian-Williams-QueImage Credit: Ali Goldstein/NBCQué Sorpresa! That’s “what a surprise” for all you people who don’t speak Spanish or don’t know how to use Google like I cleverly did. And what a surprise it was. I’d never thought I’d live to see the day that Elizabeth Lemon was with child. Then again, it was only a fake pregnancy. But I’m getting ahead of myself here. 'Parks and Recreation': Let's hear it for Pawnee, the town for weirdos who care

Parks-And-Rec-PoehlerImage Credit: Chris Haston/NBCRemember how the producers and stars of Sex and the City always talked about how New York City was the show’s secret fifth main character? Well, tonight I realized that Pawnee, Indiana itself is Parks and Recreation‘s secret weapon — and that the show wouldn’t work nearly as well if it were set in a less wonderfully quirky place.
