In the other corner, a steely journalist who developed her skills as a press aide for the Nixon White House. Glee‘s Sue Sylvester meant to insult Katie Couric on Sunday night’s episode, when she responded to the CBS anchor’s question with a sneering, “I hate you, Diane Sawyer”… READ FULL STORY »

'Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark': Which review is the harshest?

Spider-ManImage Credit: Jacob CohlThugs, mob bosses, criminal masterminds — Spider-Man has bested them all before. But the web-slinging superhero might’ve finally met his ultimate match in the theater critics who are slamming the Broadway musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, now in previews at the Foxwoods Theatre. The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, and Variety are among the news outlets that have weighed in on the high-profile production over the past 24 hours, breaking with Broadway tradition by ignoring the show’s official March 15 opening date. Many of the critics noted that Feb. 7 was Spider-Man‘s scheduled debut before the most recent postponement — just the latest bump in the road for the accident-plagued musical, which also happens to be the most expensive in Broadway history. Check out their thoughts after the jump!

'Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark' producer blasts critics -- EXCLUSIVE

spider-man-turn-off-darkIn the wake of the critical drubbing endured today by the Broadway musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, producer Michael Cohl is speaking up in defense of his show — and in contempt of the critics who he says aren’t giving it a fair shot. “Any of the people who review the show and say it has no redeeming value are just not legitimate reviewers, period,” says Cohl, who claims the show’s detractors (The New York Times and The Washington Post both called Spider-Man one of the worst productions in Broadway history) are out of touch. “It’s hard to have people that don’t get pop culture reviewing a pop culture event, isn’t it?” (Cohl isn’t the only Spider-Man insider bashing the critics — the show’s spokesman, Rick Miramontez, released an exclusive statement to EW earlier today about the reviews: “The PILE-ON by the critics was ridiculous and uncalled for. Their actions are unprecedented and UNCOOL.”) READ FULL STORY »

Which TV character would you date in real life?

TV-characters-to-dateImage Credit: Monty Brinton/CBS; Eric McCandless/ABC; Mitchell Haaseth/NBC; Justin Stephens/NBC; John P. Johnson/HBOSince Valentine’s Day is approaching, we’ve decided it’s time to crown TV’s Most Datable Characters. Here’s how this works: As we did in 2008, we are asking you to name the TV character you’d actually date in real life. The rules remain the same:

1. Hosts or reality TV contestants of any kind are disqualified. The relationship you’re creating is real; your better half must be fictional.
2. You can’t change anything about your partner — other than that he or she will no longer have feelings for the show love interest, obviously.

Here’s what’s different: This year, we’ll tally your nominations — male and female, from current shows only — and, assuming it’s not a landslide, create polls with your top picks and take this to an official vote. The Office‘s Jim Halpert won the men’s title in ’08. Can he repeat? Let’s find out.

To get you thinking, here are a few names being tossed around PopWatch HQ. Remember, if you want them to make the poll round, you have to nominate them as well…  READ FULL STORY »

'Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars' videogame trailer -- EXCLUSIVE

The first Lego Star Wars game, released in 2005, re-imagined the prequel trilogy of George Lucas’ sci-fi saga through the criminally adorable lens of Lego characters and plastic bricks. The result was so wildly successful, it spawned an entire ecosystem of Lego [Insert Iconic Movie Title Here] videogames, including Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy in 2006, and a bundled Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga in 2007. (Other Lego games include Harry Potter, Indiana Jones, and Batman.)

Now, after a four year wait, EW can exclusively debut the trailer for Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars. Based on the popular Cartoon Network series, the rated-E10+ game features new sprawling ground campaigns and new ways of using the Force. Still the same? Those Lego figures remain criminally adorable. Check out the trailer below:  READ FULL STORY »

'Two and a Half Men': Art reflects Charlie Sheen's life

Excuse me. “Art.” Now that Charlie Sheen is being home-rehabbed, it’s time to check in with CBS’ Two and a Half Men. It’s the same as it ever was, but now that America’s favorite ladies man is halting production indefinitely, the self-aware jabs at Sheen’s real life seem extra poignant. Here’s 10 of ‘em from last night’s episode — and after the break, a bonus money shot entitled “The Least Accurate Depiction of the Charlie Sheen Financial Situation.” It’s so funny! 'Hawaii Five-0': Anyone else think this show needs some real sexual tension?

Filed under: Television, TV and tagged: ,

Hawaii-Five-0I loved last night’s episode of Hawaii Five-0. I loved the idea of an FBI safe house in the middle of paradise. I loved that the witness being chased through the jungle by assassins was played by True Blood‘s Lorena (Mariana Klaveno) and that I liked her anyway. (Excellent move by Klaveno to play a redeeming character who loves her wise, autistic sister and get a trip to Hawaii.) I loved that McGarrett felt the need to separate himself from Chin and the witness as they made their way toward the courthouse, so he could hunt the bad guys and go Rambo on them. (I also loved how he took the lengthy call from Danno as he was setting a booby trap, even though he should have just said, “I’m holding my phone in one hand and this trap in the other, so if an assassin were to stumble upon me right now, I would be dead because I can’t reach for my gun.”) I loved how Kono kicked the ass of “the cleaner,” who was posing as a member of the cartel lord’s defense team before Steve and Chin could save the day, even though I have no idea how she got there before they did.  READ FULL STORY »

Clip du jour: Joy Division in Playmobil form

Filed under: Music and tagged: , ,

We’ve seen just about everything reimagined in Lego form, so now it’s a different European plastic toy’s turn. Joy Division as Playmobil! I can’t tell what’s better: the frantic drumming, or the idea that they make Playmobil dudes with scraggly hair. READ FULL STORY »

Meryl Streep channels Margaret Thatcher in 'The Iron Lady'

meryl-streep-thatcherBehold, the first still of Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher in the upcoming biopic The Iron Lady. The film reteams Streep with her Mamma Mia! director Phyllida Lloyd and focuses on the 17 days leading up to the 1982 Falklands War.

Pearl necklaces and button earrings will make anyone look like a politician — see: every impression of Hillary Clinton, ever — but it takes a special kind of talent to hold one’s face in a stress position for an entire movie. Meryl Streep! She can do everything.

It’s almost like elaborate make-up and fake teeth can really transform someone’s appearance, PopWatchers. But I’m still really impressed by how convincingly not Meryl Streep-y this photo seems. Aren’t you?

'Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark' spokesman reacts to reviews -- EXCLUSIVE

Spider-Man-Turn-Off-the-DarkImage Credit: Jacob CohlNews outlets including The New York Times and The Los Angeles Times broke with Broadway tradition last night by running reviews of Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark before its official opening on March 15, prompting a spokesman for the show to publicly speak out against their actions. “The PILE-ON by the critics was ridiculous and uncalled for. Their actions are unprecedented and UNCOOL!” said the show’s spokesman Rick Miramontez in an exclusive statement to EW. Many of the the critics noted that the date of their reviews, Feb. 7, was supposed to have been opening night for the long-delayed, notoriously troubled Spider-Man musical before a third postponement last month pushed the official premiere to March 15.
