Valentine's Day Surprise! Barbie and Ken are officially back together

One of America’s most epic romances is back on: Mattel is announcing today that, after shocking the world with their break-up in 2004 and rekindling their love on the set of last year’s blockbuster Toy Story 3, Barbie and Ken have decided to give love another chance after seven years apart. The pair’s plastic love is red-hot once again, just in time for the most romantic of holidays, Valentine’s Day. Yesterday, Barbie hinted that something might be in the works on her Facebook page with the status update: “Who knows…maybe I’ll have a Valentine this year.” Early this morning, Barbie changed her status on Facebook to “In a Relationship.”

EW called up Mattel to get a little context on the news. “They were reunited as costars, as you know, on the set of Toy Story 3,” explains Lisa McKnight, vice president of marketing at Mattel. “As we like to put it, they found they were kind of missing each other. They had a lot of fun together. Now a little time has passed since the shoot and all the premiere noise around the movie and all that good stuff, and I think they both realized that they’re made for each other.”

'The Sunset Limited': Is Tommy Lee Jones' HBO film the greatest Cormac McCarthy adaptation?

Categories: Television

Sunset-LimitedImage Credit: Dawn Jones/HBO“Two players. Two sides. One is light. One is dark.”

John Locke could have been describing Tommy Lee Jones’ new HBO adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s relentless 2006 play, The Sunset Limited. If you think that’s a reductive reading, check the script. Jones’ suicidal college professor is simply named White, while his savior, a man of faith played by Samuel L. Jackson (and a spiritual cousin to Jules Winnfield), is called Black. Essentially a 90-minute conversation in a Washington Heights tenement taking place in the immediate aftermath of White’s suicide attempt at a subway station, The Sunset Limited plays like a talky condensation of McCarthy’s great theme: How do we create meaningful lives in a chaotic world where God is silent and death is inescapable? But instead of a Western, Southern Gothic, or post-apocalyptic novel, he gave as a verbose, urban-set play, something Bergman would like (if Uncle Ingmar had had an interest in anyone but the haute bourgeoisie). 'Smallville': Winners and Luthors

On “Beacon,” Friday’s installment of Smallville, Alternate Universe Lionel Luthor started shaking things up, Martha Kent taught us all the value of a bulletproof vest, Lois made some muffins and, perhaps most importantly, the VRA got voted down — a major win for our fearless heroes.

What with the (sometimes literal) backstabbing and the cloning and the evil business empire, the Luthors have got to be the most messed-up family since Oedipus and Antigone’s clan. Life among the Luthors got even more complicated tonight when Lionel found a grown-up Alexander — fresh from shooting Martha with kryptonite bullets — and pledged to help him on his quest to kill Clark. It seemed as though Alexander was all set to go along with the plan… until he revealed that he’s still angry about the whole Lionel-choosing-Clark-over-him thing, knocked his father out, and set their mansion ablaze. Adam Sandler's 'Billy Madison': Should we just go with it? PopWatch Rewind looks at the funnyman's first big movie

Adam Sandler is one of the last true movie stars. Tellingly, he’s essentially the only über-successful actor in contemporary Hollywood to never take a role in a film franchise — because, just like the Hollywood stars of yore, he is the franchise. He produces almost all his movies, and has a regular caravan of co-creators (like director Dennis Dugan) and co-stars (like Rob Schneider, who’s been in 12 Sandler movies playing 12 different offensive stereotypes) who follow him from project to project. To celebrate today’s release of Just Go With It, the 22nd film Sandler’s headlined since 1995, we went back to where it all began: Billy Madison, the story of a man-boy who decided to go back to school, back to school, to prove to his dad that he’s not a fool. Categories: Movie Trailers, Movies

The Super Bowl is always a super week for movie trailers: Movie studios like nothing better than a captive audience of 111 million amped-up TV watchers to show off their latest wares. During last Sunday’s game, we got peeks at J.J. Abrams’ Super 8, the new Captain America, and Thor, to name a few. But the week still had more goods in store, with first looks at movies like X-Men: First Class, Arthur, and Disney’s Prom. Check them all out below, and then sound off in the comments about which ones are going on your to-watch list! READ FULL STORY »

'American Idol': Why fans of cult movie 'The Room' should be rooting for Clint Jun Gamboa

the-room-clint-jun-gamboaIt is no secret that EW has an above average interest in both American Idol and the so-bad-it’s-awesome cult movie, The Room. But I never thought there would be a reason to write a blog item that mentioned both of these titanic cultural institutions. Until now!

Earlier today, Room star Greg Sestero (“Oh, hi Mark!”) emailed me with the thrilling news that current American Idol contestant Clint Jun Gamboa is also one of the singers on The Room soundtrack. READ FULL STORY »

Russell Brand's 'SNL' promos: Now with (about the usual amount of) heavage!

The star of this week’s promos for Saturday Night Live? No, not Russell Brand. Russell Brand’s clavicles! One day, I’d like to introduce the comedian to a button. Maybe they’ll hit it off like he did with Katy Perry. But anyway, check out the Brit’s promos for his hosting stint — with musical guest Chris Brown — airing this Saturday. The only thing that could outshine Brand (and promo co-stars Andy Samberg and Jason Sudeikis) are his jackets! READ FULL STORY »

The Egypt revolution: Celebs respond via Twitter

Categories: Current Affairs, Twitter

Hosni-MubarakImage Credit: Alex Wong/Getty Images; Emilio Morenatti/AP ImagesAs the citizens of Egypt take to the streets to celebrate the resignation of President Hosni Mubarak, Hollywood is taking to Twitter to mark the historic event. Here are some highlights:

Ryan Seacrest: “We have had the news from egypt on all morning here…cheers erupted earlier. Incredible to see unfold live!!”

Keith Olbermann: “There is a great truth today that even transcends Egypt. Consider Poland, West Germany, India, today: Repression is ultimately unsustainable. (He later noted he meant East Germany.)” READ FULL STORY »

Justin Bieber goes bald on 'Kimmel'

Justin Bieber was supposed to perform a duet with Jimmy Kimmel last night, but the host was inspired by one of his fans’ suggested song titles: “Jimmy Cuts Justin’s Hair.” What started as a single snip of the Bieb’s locks culminated in what was made to look like a totally shorn dome. Bieber thought it was Jordan-esque, while Kimmel complemented him as a young Lex Luthor. “I think the girls are gonna be upset,” admitted Bald Bieb during the comedy bit, “But, you know, they’ll get over it.” Their hearts might, Justin, but their retinas might never recover. Take a look. READ FULL STORY »

This Week on Stage: Jane Fonda takes her New York triumph to L.A.

Categories: Stage/Theater

33-Variations-JFondaThe chilly early critical reaction to Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark was the biggest (if least surprising) news in stage this week. With much less, and more positive fanfare, Stephen Colbert announced that he’s starring alongside Neil Patrick Harris and Patti LuPone in a three-night revival of Stephen Sondheim’s Company at the New York Philharmonic this April. Kathy Griffin confirmed her Broadway debut in Kathy Griffin Wants a Tony (a rep for the awards told EW that the brief, eight-show run meets the minimum requirement for eligibility). American Idol season 1 runner-up Justin Guarini revealed he’s appearing with AFI’s Davey Havok in American Idiot in March. And our critics reviewed these New York and Los Angeles shows: READ FULL STORY »
