'Mortal Kombat': New web series will star Michael Jai White and Jeri Ryan

Filed under: News, Videogames and tagged: ,

There still hasn’t really been a good movie based on a videogame — trust us, we made a list — but 1995′s Mortal Kombat is one of the least-bad films in the genre. Unfortunately, the 1997 sequel Mortal Kombat: Annihilation is one of the worst movies ever made, and especially considering the insane mythology that runs throughout the videogame series, I’ve always felt like MK deserved another chance at adaptation. My wish has kind of been answered: According to a press release from Warner Bros., Mortal Kombat will be adapted into a web series starring Jeri Ryan (who played Star Trek: Voyager‘s Seven of Nine) and Michael Jai White (who played Spawn in Spawn Black Dynamite in Black Dynamite). 'Jeopardy' pits human champions against soulless machine, starting tonight

JeopardyImage Credit: Ben Hider/Getty ImagesIf you’re a horrible robot secretly plotting an apocalyptic takeover of the planet Earth, then the next three days will feel like Christmas, Independence Day, and Super Bowl Sunday, with just a touch of Bastille Day. That’s because Jeopardy is beginning a special three-night showdown between two of the quiz show’s ultra-champions — Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter, a.k.a. “Mr. Winning Streak” and “Mr. Moneybags” — and Watson, a soulless robot invented by IBM to prove that machines can finally defeat their creators at the oldest game in human history: Knowledge of Random Trivia. (You’ll recall that the last time IBM did something like this, they created an abomination called Deep Blue, which defeated Garry Kasparov and ruined chess forever. In other news, IBM is changing its name to “Skynet.”) READ FULL STORY »

Bill Murray... former actor... about to become... Pebble Beach champion

Bill Murray is accustomed to being one of the biggest attractions at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-am golf tournament each year, as huge crowds follow his group in the hopes that the Caddyshack star will deliver some yuks. But yesterday, Murray and his pro partner, D.A. Points, delivered where it actually mattered, winning the pro-am title by two strokes. More importantly, both men managed to emerge unscathed from the clumsiest chest-bump ever. READ FULL STORY »

BAFTA Awards: Our British reporter's lively on the scene account of the big night for 'The King's Speech'

For this year’s British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards, EW sent London-based reporter Matt Mueller to give his On the Scene report of the biggest night in filmmaking across the pond. WARNING: Britishisms ahoy!

For the fifth year running, the BAFTAs were held at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, London. They’re the British equivalent of the Oscars; fortunately, the TV awards were hived off years ago into a separate ceremony because, after all, would you want Annette Bening, Amy Adams and Mark Ruffalo to share a red carpet with the craggy, unfamiliar-with-botox-or-dentistry stars of Britain’s popular nighttime soap operas EastEnders and Coronation Street? (These shows have been running for decades.) READ FULL STORY »

'Green Lantern,' 'Twilight,' 'BioShock' action figures doll up Toy Fair 2011

toy-fair-2011Image Credit: Tonner Doll CompanyToys, toys, toys everywhere! This year’s Toy Fair kicked off yesterday, introducing a gaggle of action figures built around new movie franchises, upcoming videogames, and attractive vampire teenagers. Tons of photos from the event have shown up online, but I’d like to direct your attention to freakishly real-looking toys in particular. The “Jasper” figure (see left) from Twilight perfectly captures Jackson Rathbone’s elfen cheekbones — parents of 9-year-old girls, I present you with the only birthday present your daughter will really want this year. The Green Lantern action figure is also pretty spot-on — although Ryan Reynolds’ hair looks a little bit too Harry Osborn-esque — but what’s interesting is how organic-looking they’ve made the costume. It almost looks vaguely insectile. Check it out after the jump… READ FULL STORY »

TV's Most Dateable Characters: Choose your 'one' from readers' top picks (Poll!)

Dateable-charactersImage Credit: Greg Gayne/NBC; Justin Lubin/NBC; Brian Bowen Smith/Fox; Mitchell Haaseth/NBC; Bob D'Amico/ABC (2)Last week, PopWatch asked readers to name the TV character they’d date in real life. After tallying more than 2,000 nominations (yes, we read them all), we’re ready to take it to a vote. We’ve put your top picks — 25 men, and 29 women (there was a tie for that last spot) — in two polls below. Vote now through Tuesday at midnight ET. Come back Friday when we’ll reveal the results. Remember: You can’t change anything about the character you’re picking, other than that he or she will no longer have feelings for his or her show love interest. (Second rule: Do not feel guilty.) Note: The order the characters are listed in the polls below is how they ranked during the first round, when you could be indecisive. What will happen when you can only pick one?  READ FULL STORY »

Howard Stern tweets a commentary to 'Private Parts.' Is this the future?

private-parts-sternImage Credit: Everett CollectionHoward Stern’s Private Parts has been running ad nauseam on HBO this month, but one of Saturday’s broadcasts had plugged-in fans glued to the tube. That is because Stern himself was simultaneously tweeting a running commentary online while he was watching at home. Stern broke down his favorite scenes, discussed his co-stars, and separated fact from fiction: “The real reality- we called him pig virus and I have no idea why I changed it . I have to ask the writer Len Blum why i did that,” he typed about Pig Vomit, the film’s antagonist played by Paul Giamatti. Most of his comments were vintage Howard, like, “The erection scene in the movie was a metal piece that put in my pants. I had a stunt penis,” and others were pure manna for Stern junkies: “jenna jameson for this scene. she was so comfortable on set she stayed naked even at the kraft services table.” No surprise, then that “Private Parts” was quickly trending. What happened to tongue-tied CBS News reporter Serene Branson?

Filed under: Music, TV and tagged:

Like most red-blooded Americans, I love videos of newscasters making giant flubs on the air — like this one, this one, and (especially) this one. But the following clip, in which CBS News reporter Serene Branson’s post-Grammys report devolves into gibberish, is actually kind of unsettling. Suspicions that something may have been wrong with Branson were raised further after a (totally unconfirmed) report surfaced earlier today that she was hospitalized shortly after the segment aired. Calls to CBS News were not returned. Here’s hoping everything is okay and it was just a run-of-the-mill goof. UPDATE: CBS Los Angeles reports that Branson was not hospitalized after all. She was examined by paramedics immediately after her broadcast, who found her vital signs to be normal. READ FULL STORY »

Lady Gaga's egg coffin, Batman bubble butt: EW.com readers outraged, confused at low shock value

Lady Gaga threw a wrench into the peaceful fabric of Crazy Town, of which she is mayor, by showing up to Sunday’s Grammy Awards encased in a giant egg, then “hatching” in a solid-color latex number with zero — zero! — random patches of material calling attention to her genital area. “This is pretty tame for her; most of her body is covered,” complained dee123 in the comment section of EW’s Grammys Red Carpet photo gallery. Meg Mon agreed. “She did add a few little Klingon bits on her forehead and shoulders. But for someone who is being ‘born’ into a performance, I expect something — bigger.” According to Allison, Gaga failed in more than one arena of fashion: “Not crazy enough to be shocking, not sane enough to be pretty,” she laments. Luckily, Ethan stepped in as the voice of reason. “I can’t believe you’re calling her tame when she came to the effin’ Grammys IN AN EGG. I love what Lady Gaga has done to life.”

Meanwhile, my favorite Gaga-related comment came from loyal reader Madd: “The leather outfit (pictured, bottom) reminded me of the Arrested Development episode where Tobias buys a ‘Leather Daddy’ outfit.” Oh, does it ever. READ FULL STORY »
