Anthony Bourdain blogs 'Top Chef: All-Stars': Episode 10

Anthony-BourdainAs told to Archana Ram.

The Elimination challenge was brutal. In a lot of ways, even at its strangest and most gimmicky, Top Chef mimics the real world in the sense that, when you run a restaurant, on a Saturday night, you don’t know who your customers are going to be and what’s going to go wrong. You might have to improvise. It was certainly a tough challenge. Plus it was 3 in the morning. The exhaustion factor with these guys was big.

I don’t know whether making soup was a strategy, but the chefs were desperate. They were in a limited situation. They were insecure with their environment, unfamiliar with the tools. They really had to wing it. I think they were playing it safe with soup. But I think the fact that a grilled cheese sandwich with tomato soup won tells you something. That was obviously a smart way to go. That wasn’t the time to start doing really complex food. Overcomplicating and overreaching is often a lethal strategy. I would’ve played it safe and tried to do the best I could to not go home. I wouldn’t have made this as my day to go home with the big money. But I never would’ve made it to the finals of Top Chef on my culinary skills alone. I was a journeyman chef of middling ability. Generally speaking the chefs on the show, most of them are better cooks than I am, though maybe not as experienced or as well or widely eaten. READ FULL STORY »

Some fans were worried that the new season of Survivor would be the Rob and Russell show. Instead, a kooky former federal agent rocking droopy fuchsia underwear stole the premiere episode spotlight with his alarming abruptness and seeming inability to pronounce the name Francesca. But would his zany antics get him voted out of the tribe? My full recap will be up at midnight (UPDATE: Click the link to read Dalton’s Survivor: Redemption Island premiere recap), but if you’ve already watched and can’t wait to sound off about what happened and whose torch was snuffed, then read on after the jump for more! 'Dead Island' trailer: Tropical zombie videogame has a mind-blowing, eye-popping promo

I rarely play videogames and usually don’t even make it to the end of online movie trailers. (I’m a supes biz career woman, what do you expect?) So imagine my surprise when I open-mouth-gaped my way through this amazing Lost-meets-The Walking Dead trailer for Dead Island (release still TBA) without reaching for my trusty ADD-enabling mouse even once! Video — and an instant reaction from actual videogame player Darren Franich — after the break.  READ FULL STORY »

James Van Der Beek to play himself in comedy pilot. Who else would you watch play themselves in a sitcom?

James-Van-Der-BeekImage Credit: Kevin Parry/WireImage.comWell, it’s about time! After watching his Dawson’s Creek co-stars mature into a two-time Oscar nominee, a cult TV show lead, and a Batman Begins star and wife of a global megastar, James Van Der Beek is finally getting his chance to shine: EW has confirmed Deadline’s report that the former teen heartthrob has nabbed a role in ABC’s Don’t Trust the Bitch in Apt. 23 pilot. It gets better: In the pilot, Van Der Beek will be playing… himself. This news makes me so happy, I could do this.

Because, really, why would we want to watch James Van Der Beek play an undetermined role when he could be James Van Der Beek, he of the hysterically nostalgic Funny or Die videos? READ FULL STORY »

'Parenthood': Is it too real for its own good? Or just mine?

Filed under: Television, TV and tagged: ,

parenthoodImage Credit: Danny Feld/NBCNear the end of last night’s Parenthood, Adam (Peter Krause) asked Amazing Andy (guest star Michael Emerson), a man with Asperger’s who entertains at children’s parties with his bug collection, if he was happy. “Yeah, sometimes,” Amazing Andy said. Then he asked Adam the same question. “Yeah, sometimes,” Adam answered. That’s really the best response any of us can hope for — at least at some points in our lives — and it’s that honesty that we appreciate about this show. But does the realism ever get to be too much?  READ FULL STORY »

Underage 'Skins' cast poses in lingerie for 'Elle,' ruffles familiar feathers

Thomas Whiteside/ELLE

Well, it’s been about, oh, two weeks since Skins was the center of controversy, inspiring companies to pull sponsorship due to the show’s over-sexed underage content. Apparently, two weeks is too long. Too long, I tell you! Because today comes news that some of Skins‘ cast — including a few of its underage members — have posed for Elle magazine for an “innerwear-as-outerwear” photo shoot. Translation: A lingerie-heavy shoot. (UPDATE: Robbie Myers, Elle‘s editor-in-chief, has issued the following comment to EW about the shoot: “Innerwear as outerwear has been a trend for decades, and Joe Zee’s point was to make what the actors wear on their show more fashion, less vulgar. The content of Skins is infinitely more racy than anything we’d have them do. And we had the blessing of their parents: they were at the shoot.”) READ FULL STORY »

Liam Neeson on Natasha Richardson's death: 'It hits you in the middle of the night'

Natasha-RichardsonImage Credit: Randy Runner/WireImage.com Almost two years since the unexpected death of Natasha Richardson at age 45, after a tragic, seemingly benign skiing accident, Liam Neeson has opened up at length about his wife’s death in a candid interview appearing in the March issue of Esquire magazine.

At first, Neeson tells author Tom Chiarella he’s “too vulnerable” to talk about Richardson’s death. But a short time later, he does open up about it — in emotional detail. Neeson recounts those first moments after arriving at the Montreal hospital where Richardson was taken, and how he actually had to search to find a member of the hospital staff  who recognized him and let him in to see his wife: “This one, she says, ‘Go in that back door there.’ She points me to it. ‘Make a left. She’s in a room there.’ So I get there, just in time. And all these young doctors, who look all of eighteen years of age, they tell me the worst.” READ FULL STORY »

Justin Bieber to Rolling Stone: 'I don't think you should have sex with anyone unless you love them.'

Justin-bieberImage Credit: Mike Marsland/WireImage.comJustin Bieber loves universal healthcare, doesn’t believe in abortion, and thinks you should wait until you’re in love to have sex. These and more revelations come from a Rolling Stone interview with the teen pop godling, who seems not-at-all-shy about expressing measured opinions about the world outside of his music. On America, Bieber jokes: “You guys are evil. Canada’s the best country in the world. We go to the doctor and we don’t need to worry about paying him, but here, your whole life, you’re broke because of medical bills.” (Oh, tonight’s Glenn Beck is going to be a treat!)
