Reese Witherspoon's Oscar dress: Channeling Julia? Or Barbie?

barbie-oscar-dressImage Credit: A.M.P.A.S.; Chris Weeks/Getty ImagesReese Witherspoon presented at the Oscars last night wearing a gorgeous Armani Prive gown — a look we awarded an impressive A+ — but many of you have pointed out its similarity to another knock-out Oscars dress: The Valentino Julia Roberts wore in 2001 when she picked up her statue for Erin Brockovich. I, however, choose to think the actress was channeling a different legend: Vintage Barbie. There was something about that swooped high ponytail and form-fitting — yet conservative — dress that made me want to see if her fingers separated and throw her in a dusty box with an old Jem doll that looks far too much like a man to not wonder what kind of powers Synergy possesses.

What say you, PopWatchers?

I immediately thought about my vintage Barbie doll. I had that dress & loved it. I wanted to grow up & get one for myself.

I did, too! My husband can quote me, I said right away, “she looks like a Barbie doll”. She also pulls that look off very well.

I said pretty much the same thing, “Look, it’s Oscar Barbie!” but i meant it in a nice way. She looks fantastic!

      I didn’t like either.

is it possible Reese didn’t go back 10 years and examine every celebrity dress and just picked one that looked good?

I was thinking how it would look crumpled up on my floor in the morning…

It looks exactly like my friend’s prom dress. From seven years ago.

  • omg

    she looked amazing!

  • Levente

So boring. Reese can do much better.

  • Stacie

I thought of Julia Roberts immediately! Pretty boring. The Guardian said she looked like a pint of Guiness.

  • Lia

I thought Julia Roberts the minute I saw Reese

The dress looked great no matter who she reminded anyone of. The hair was another matter. She looked like one of those polygamist wives from Big Love.

Did no one else think of Kelly and Brenda’s prom dress from the original 90210!?!?

    • hahahaha YES!!!

And I thought I was the only one!! LOVE THIS!! Remeber when Jim Walsh said “You two look like the bobsy twins”

thank you – i thought i was going crazy!

You’re trying to tell me that Reece was “channeling” Julia because, what, both their dresses were black and white and somewhat vintage looking? That’s a pretty weak argument–their dresses are not really similar at all.

    • SirLizard

No, they’re not trying to tell you that Reece was channeling Julia. They’re trying to tell you the Reese was channeling Julia.

  • Michael Martinez

she looked like she was going to prom in the late 80’s and her hair was priming itself for the back seat later

  • s-k-s

Unless Julia Roberts was the first and last person to mix black and white in a dress, I don’t think you can see Reese was “channeling” JR’s dress. The two just aren’t at all similar.

  • SirLizard

Other than the black and white, there was no similarity at all to the Valentino that Julia Roberts wore.
