'Dumb & Dumber' sequel 'is in motion': Would you see a follow-up starring Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels?

164040__dumbImage Credit: Everett CollectionJust when we thought the Dumb & Dumber franchise couldn’t get any dumber — thanks to 2003’s ill-advised, non-Farrelly Brothers-affiliated Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd — Peter and Bobby Farrelly aim to do something like this to totally redeem it: Speaking to Moviehole, Bobby Farrelly hinted at a possible sequel to the 1994 hit film, and, thankfully, that sequel would see the return of Dumb & Dumber‘s original stars. Said Bobby: “If we could get those two guys back together, Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels that might be a worthwhile sequel — and that ball is in motion. We’re starting to think about what those two dimwits would be doing 20 years later in life, and hopefully we’ll be able to come up with something worthy of a sequel.”

EW has confirmed with the Farrelly Brothers’ rep that the ball is indeed in motion on a Dumb & Dumber sequel, which leads us to question: Holy hell, it’s been almost 20 years since the movie came out?! How did I get so old?! And: Do we even want to see Dumb & Dumber: Man-Boys of a Certain Age?

I always shudder at the thought of a follow-up to great movies (thanks to Grease 2 and Matrix Revolutions for giving me the sequel spooks), but I’m not completely opposed to a second Dumb & Dumber film. Perhaps that’s because I’m eager to see how blank slates Harry and Lloyd have matured mentally and emotionally, if at all. Have they gotten their big break? Have they taught themselves enough basic science to learn to not lick a metal pole in winter? Are their pets’ heads STILL FALLING OFF?!

Of course, revisiting a franchise more than a decade later could go very, very wrong (See: Little Fockers, The Odd Couple II). But, as we’ve seen in the past few months with commercial hits like TRON: Legacy and critical hits like Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, nostalgia often works in favor of select franchises. (Not that I’m putting Dumb & Dumber on the same level as 1987’s Wall Street — though they both involve briefcases.) And, when it comes to the ’90s, you can’t get more nostalgic than Dumb & Dumber. Of course, Carrey and Daniels would have to be involved in order for any kind of sequel to be satisfying (both the actors’ rep have yet to respond to EW’s request for comment) — a Dumb & Dumber movie without the original Harry and Lloyd is like, well, a bird without a head.

Your turn to vote, PopWatchers: Would you see Dumb & Dumber 2, starring Carry and Daniels?

Ha! That would be awesome. I would love to see a sequel with Jim and Jeff, but I don’t think it’s going to happen.

      (Hello, JohnDoe)

Kate Ward, thanks for a good read.

      – –

I’ve voted “no” because I jump-started directly to the voting; I would have said yes had I read the article and learnt that about Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels. (So, my answer is, yes!)

PS: Dumb and DumberER the sequel was lame, IMO. It seems they just wanted to milk some money back then. Just say’n.

      • joe

It’s about time these two did what made them famous…I’d pay anytime to see these two in action!

      • Dosh

dumb and dumberer was a prequel.

        @Dosh,

Creativity in Hollywood must be bankrupted.

    • Color Me Impressed

So you’re saying theres a chance?!

      • Cheryl

        hee hee hee, good one!

      • Jackie

“So you’re TELLING me there’s a chance?”… Sorry, I’ve seen this movie way too many times.

      • yelhsa

        I love it!

I have M0CKYEA on my license plate! I love watching people try to figure it out. I saw two cops act it out once!! :)

    • Dosh

Jim Carrey has sworn he will never do another sequel. It will never happen. I would bet money on it.

      • jim

        I dont gamble.

      • chris

        I’ll give you 10-1 odds…. 20-1???? :0)

    • Pookie

“Jim & Jeff”????? REALLY? Are you their @*#@* BEST FRIEND? Sad.

      • JohnDoe

Umm, no…I just chose not to type out their last names. Is that a problem for you?

  • stop_hating

    1000% yes.

    • David

Finally, a sequel that might actually be epic!

  • sherimoonzombie

Nooooo. This could trump Sandler’s Zohan as the worst idea ever….

    • angel

      i actually liked zohan lol

      • D Money

Zohan was a weird, different, crazy, and awesome movie!

      • allobidallo

That movie was terrible. The fight scene in the beginning with Zohan and that bad guy. They were both in the water, but they were too close together for the next scene, so movie magic decides to just have them slide back so they’d be further away. Then they both just happen to have gigantic ping pong pattles on them to hit a grenade back and forth. Horrible.

      • allobidallo

        oops, paddles. Sorry spelling police.

  • Helena

EW, keep us informed on what’s going on with this movie. That way I can miss it when it comes out. Thanks! :)

  • Capt. Communist

If Jim and Jeff say YES, so do I.

  • Wha

Just when I think Hollywood couldn’t possibly be any dumber, it does something like this…
    AND TOTALLY REDEEMS ITSELF.

    • Mike

hahaha, that made me laugh, Wha

    • DaDude

good one, that was funny. They have to do this now that they introduced the idea to us.

  • Robert Holik

    Yeah… just ONE tiny problem.
Jim Carrey doesn’t do sequels, I know what you’re thinking, yes, he did Ace Ventura, but he had it in his contract. He doesn’t like to “revisit” old characters he says.

    • John C.

Yes Man and Liar Liar were the exact same thing.

      • Josh

        Not quite..

      • ej

I agree he was pretty much playing the same character

      • jcvd

I’m not trying to argue in favor of Liar Liar, but the characters he plays in those films are nothing alike, other than the premise that they are, in some way, forced to say/do things. The guy in Liar Liar was cocky, self-centered, brash. In Yes Man, he was meek, insecure, a door mat.

    • BG

Yeah…um, I think if the money is there, Jim Carrey will do it. It’s not like he’s doing anything great now.

  • MikeT

If Jim & Jeff do it, I’m in! I’d rather see a “Wayne’s World 3″ though. Wayne & Garth, 45 years old, doing an Internet show, while still in mom’s basement. :)

    • Dosh

He was out of his moms basement in waynes world 2.

      • Casey

Yeah–but there has been a recession and now he’s BACK in mom’s basEMENT!

    • Heather P

They just did a a recent Wayne’s World skit on SNL a few weeks ago when Dana Carvey was hosting it. Yep, Wayne and Garth are still in Mom’s basement.

  • John C.

They all could probably use the boost to their careers right about now.

  • Kiersten

Only if Carrey and Daniels are back involved am I down with this. And only if the storyline is on point.

  • Andrew

I’m in favor of it. Jeff Daniels has had a great career, and few actors deserve more to collect a big-ass paycheck, and this is probably the only way he’s ever going to get one.

    • REASON

He was great in The Answer Man

  • Dennis

I’d pay seven times the admission of an Imax 3D movie for a ticket to see this THAT’S HOW BAD I WANT THIS TO HAPPEN!!!

  • Emily

So are the chances of this happening like 1 in 100 or closer to 1 in a million?

    • Rob

      So you’re saying there’s a chance. YEAH!!!

    • Hans

      Tic-tac sir?

  • Eric

This could work of course with both of them in it.

I still dont understand why they tried to make a sequel in the first place without Carrey, and Daniels.

  • Buddymoore

I would definitely go see it. I have a feeling that it wouldn’t be a very good movie, but it could potentially be a pretty huge movie and the Farrelly Brothers need a hit.
