if it’s “eccentric” characters then I have to go with Captn Jack Sparrow, but my all time favorite Johnny Depp character is John Dillinger from Public Enemies. I know he’s a real person, but the way Depp protrayed him was my favorite Johnny Depp performance
Depp needs to act his age and play appropriate roles. The continuous, ridiculous and out of this world characters are silly and goofy.
Plus, like Sandler, all his characters are the same!

It is not like he only plays quirky roles. Have you seen all his movies? It is just the more popular roles are eccentric.

Absolutely, I love them all, quirky weird. I find the weirder the better.
@jen: Yes! Johnny Depp played that role to the T, and he looked drop-dead gorgeous doing it. He already is attractive, but when he shaves the beard, puts on normal clothes, he is just beautiful and unstoppable.
While I absolutely LOVE Depp’s quirky roles, it’s when he looks like a real person that REALLY shows how talented he is.
I have a tough time voting because I love him as Willy Wonka, Captain Jack and The Mad Hatter. But I especially loved him as John Dillinger also.

My favorite of his collaborations with Tim Burton is “Ed Wood”, so I’d have to say that’s my favorite “eccentric” character of his.
I think my favorite movie of his is the underrated “Donnie Brasco.”
