'Soapdish' remake moving forward. That's depressing and it's expensive -- two words I hate.

soapdishHollywood loves its remakes. It’s a reality we’ve all got to live with. But does that mean we have to accept it? I say, “Hell to the no!” — especially in the light of news that Paramount is going forward with its remake of the 1991 comedy Soapdish, which was first reported last May. This totally underrated gem about the backstage drama at a daytime soap opera does not deserve to have its memory defiled by what could very well be a pale and lackluster update. (Of course, maybe it will be great — because sometimes, on rare occasions, remakes don’t totally suck.) But honestly, can you improve on perfection? Can you improve on a cast that includes Sally Field, Robert Downey Jr. (at his manic best — see clip after the jump), Whoopi Goldberg (once upon a time she was quite a funny lady) and Kevin Kline? When I try to imagine other people playing Celeste Talbert and Jeffrey Anderson, I feel like my brain will literally explode within the next three hours. Tell me, Dish fans, am I overreacting?

NO! NO! NO!!! Remake “Super Fuzz”, not this classic! “He was decapitated! Do you know what that means? He doesn’t have a head! How can I write for someone who doesn’t have a head?!”

    • Anne

It was reattached in a precedent-setting, three-day operation.

I too have an oath. A nurse’s oath.

…that I don’t feel quite right in a turban. What I feel like is GLORIA F-ing SWANSON! What am I, 70, David? Am I 70? Why don’t you just put me in a walker? Buy a GD walker and put me in it!”

      Fun times! Great memory, ladies!

The people wanting to remake this must be kopfgeschlagen as we call it in Austria.
I’m from Austria and the word kopfgeschlagen doesn’t even exist, but that movie is hilarious and should be left alone.

It does not. lol. They were making fun of Haggen Daz which too is a made up name.

I second the “Hell to the No”. This was a great movie and considering how barren the daytime soap landscape is now, it won’t have the same effect. Why ruin it?

Oh, thats right: Hollywood has no original ideas!

I LOVE this movie, I hunted it down on DVD the minute it became available. Perfect casting, perfect writing, perfect delivery. I never thought of Sally Field as funny until I saw this movie, and she rocks this film.

  • Brandi

    NOOOOOOOOOOOO! I hate Hollywood. Losers!!

  • Carrie

    The original was perfection.

    • LOL

Saying something is “perfection” is so 2010.

And making idiotic comments like that is SO 2/23/11 @4:26pm…

    • amie

      Agreed, leave this movie alone.

  • Nicole

I forgot how great this movie was. The remake will remind me as well.

  • Laura

HORRIBLE IDEA!! The original is a classic as far as I’m concerned, and a lot of that has to do with the actors involved, as well as the time it was set (the big hair and poufy sleeves just added to the tacky awesomeness). STOP THIS REMAKE!

    • Anne

Someone at Paramount needs a brain transplant. Get the ether.

      • jen

        lol

  • Wendy

I’ve ruined three lives. THREE LIVES. Me, America’s Sweetheart!

  • Nic.

Seriously? They can’t come up with any new ideas? Soapdish is a classic — anything they try to do to “update” it will completely fail.

  • Kate

A terrible idea, especially since soaps are not quite as popular as then…really this would have to be a grey’s anatomy type parody or a gossip girl type parody to be justified and really surprise children who don’t know that their aunt is actually their mother doesn’t really happen on those kind of shows.

  • Brian

You are not overreacting Kristen. The original Soapdish was brilliant, even the minor parts – Carrie Fisher anyone? – “My name’s Betsy Faye Sharon, and I’m a bit**.”

    • Anne

I heartily agree. My mom and sister saw this and both called me, ORDERING me to go see it. I remember laughing so hard in the theatre I cried. Even my date loved it, and he was NOT happy about going.

    • Anne

“Will you be having wine with your dinner?”

    • Art

“These homeless look like they came off the street.”

  • Jeremy

I love this movie. Get rid of the remake, and Mr. Fuzzy is yours.

    • Anne

      God, you’re cheap.

  • Shelley with an E

THIS CAN’T HAPPEN! I love this movie so so much. Everytime my husband and I see a word that’s difficult to pronounce, we both say “Kopfgeschlagen” a la Kevin Kline’s character. Love it!

    • Anne

“Your brain will laterally explore ….”

What makes it perfect is that red tassle that keeps hanging on his forehead.

  • Rebecca

Soapdish is one of my favorite movies of all-time and I HATE the idea of it being remade.

  • Emily

This is a complete classic. The cast, writing, and acting were just amazing. My family quotes it constantly. A remake of this would be like remaking ‘Citizen Kane’ or something equally as original. We’ve seen how remakes of other classic movies have taken great concepts and turned them into utter SH** (see: The Day the Earth Stood Still with Keanu Reeves).

    LEAVE SOAPDISH ALONE!!!

  • AC

    I LOVE THIS MOVIE.

    THIS IS TERRIBLE, TERRIBLE NEWS.

    No more remakes, Hollywood!

    • Sina

Thank you! No more remakes!!! First Last Dragon now this. They have to stop. They can do a movie about Montana/Milton Moorehead’s life as an actor playing Willie Loman at the old people dinner theatre.

    • Tarc

How is it terrible? If you don’t like it, don’t go see it – like very other movie. Geesh.

  • Kyle

I personally think it could be a good idea…instead of a remake, how about a reboot…go on the idea of sending up soaps, but using the current state of daytime drama – the advent of HD, the recent cancellations due to budgets, the firing of older actors…I’m holding out for this.
