Danny Boyle's 'Frankenstein' trailer: Who wants to see Jonny Lee Miller as the Creature?

The Danny Boyle-directed stage production of Frankenstein at London’s National Theatre features actors Jonny Lee Miller and Benedict Cumberbatch alternating roles. One evening, Miller is Victor Frankenstein and Cumberbatch is the Creature; the next, Miller is the Creature and Cumberbatch is Victor Frankenstein. Watching the trailer below in which the actors morph in and out of the characters, I found looking at Jonny Lee Miller as the monster made me sad. He’s just too handsome to be mutilated. (I don’t even want to think about the fetal position I would be lying in right now if that had been Jude Law.) It cuts deeper than seeing Bradley Cooper so unkempt at the start of the Limitless trailer. But at least the payoff with Frankenstein is bound to be greater as we see how that response affects our feelings for the Creature.

The National Theatre is broadcasting two performances into movie theaters internationally on March 17 and March 24. (Find a theater near you here. Dates may vary.) One evening features Miller as Victor, the other as the Creature. Which would you pick? After much consideration, I think the only acceptable answer is… both.

Let me get the obvious out of the way: Not as good as Peter Boyle’s Frankenstein.

    • Nathan

      Not even friggin close.

    • Chelsea

I don’t see how you can compare. He played it comically, these two are adapting Shelley’s source material and playing the creature as she wrote it.

      • Peter

        Um…see…Boyle. I was playing off….never mind.

Aaaand…. not a single showing in Illinois. Fantastic. Hopefully it will show on PBS or something in the future. Love both of the leads, especially Benedict.

    • Kim E

Yes, Benedict Cumberbatch is awesome! Cannot wait for Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy!

    • TQB

SERIOUSLY? There’s no hope for me if there isn’t even a Chicago show!

I’m sure Miller will be great, but I’m going almost exclusively to see Benedict Cumberbatch (though I guess I’d want to see Miller as the Monster, as I feel Cumberbatch will make an intense Doctor).

The fact that Boyle directed it just makes it an even greater “must see”.

So I just found out its playing at my college. Totally going. This just made my day. Love Johnny Lee Miller and Benedict Cumberbatch.

You hear that Frankenstein? That’s the sound of your life running out. Tick tick tick.

    • Mr. Holloway

      Nice!

    • jahphotogal

      Jobless – LOL!

    • Bette

      Classic.

  • Jen

The only showing in Georgia is in MACON? What the heck?

    • Rebecca

I know … where did they come up with MACON!!! Like, I have to be at work the next day !!

  • Liz

Fantastic! I had assumed that I wouldn’t have the slightest chance of seeing this. Thanks for the info Mandi.

  • helen

Benedict Cumebrbatch is extraordinary as the creature.

    • Anne

I will never think of the Creature the same way again.

  • Chelsea

I’m studying in London at the moment so I am actually going to see this next week with one of my classes! It’s completely sold out so we lucked out in getting tickets. I can’t wait. What’s with all this Jonny Lee Miller talk? He’s good and all, but Benedict is the draw for me. Sherlock!

    • RemixJunkie

Ditto, Chelsea! Benedict all the way! Lucky you in London. I’m in Texas and have to settle for seeing it on the screen.

    • jahphotogal

I don’t get the Benedict appeal – those weirdly spaced eyes! Jonny on the other hand is HOTTTT and an amazing actor too!

  • Lilactime

Chicago area fans can see the London video at the Sundance Theater in Madison, WI.

I have my tickets. On April 2nd Cumberbatch is the monster and April 4 Jonny is playing him.

I wonder why Boyle couldn’t adapt it into a movie.

    • Chelsea

Boyle was actually a famous stage director before he ever did film. I think he just wanted to go back to directing stage for a bit inbetween films.

      • Jose

I was not aware of that, wow.

Either way I’m not going to lie, I’d like to see this as a movie, it would probably be better than his last 2 movies.

  • tracy bluth

I want to go to there!

  • chattypatra

Forget Jonny Lee Miller, I want to see Benedict Cumberbatch! Love him in everything he does, especially Sherlock.

  • RubyBaby

A thousand million kisses to NT Live for screening this not once but twice to take account of BC and JLM’s alternating the role of the Creature. Early reports from theatregoers in London say both are excellent in the role, so why choose when you don’t have to?!!

As for Jude Law…save your pennies Mandi, he’s back on the London stage later this year at the Donmar. And it might be included in the next NT Live season, you never know :)

  • Courtney

I will see Jonny Lee Miller in anything, even Dracula 2000. So, yeah. I wanna see him as the creature.

    • Pam

AMEN to everything you just said, Courtney! It kills me that I’m not anywhere near a theater that’s gonna show it :(. I’m just hoping they put it out on DVD! Oh, and, by the way, whoever plays the Creature is NAKED for the first thirty minutes!!!!!!!!!!
