Rolling Stone clarifies Justin Bieber abortion quote, rendering a moderate opinion even more moderate

Justin-bieberImage Credit: Mike Marsland/WireImage.comOn Wednesday, Rolling Stone posted an excerpt of their Justin Bieber interview online. The excerpt included a quote from Bieber discussing the fact that he doesn’t believe in abortion. When asked if he believed in terminating pregnancies in cases of rape, the pop star responded, “Well, I think that’s really sad, but everything happens for a reason. I guess I haven’t been in that position, so I wouldn’t be able to judge that.” Today, Rolling Stone corrected the quote slightly, adding in a sentence:

“Well, I think that’s really sad, but everything happens for a reason. I don’t know how that would be a reason. I guess I haven’t been in that position, so I wouldn’t be able to judge that.”

Moderate opinions, reasoned responses, a precocious ability to admit to cognitive limitations… PopWatchers, what’s the matter with these kids today?

I just can’t hate this kid. It’s not his fault that he’s being shoved down our throats lately (thanks, EW, Usher, & everyone else in the world). He seems fairly talented, bright, and articulate. Although his movie is being marketed towards Christian audiences, he does come off as moderate. The only thing I wish he’d do differently is speak up about the atrocious behavior of some of his fans (hate mail, etc).

    • Sami

I have never really gotten the whole Bieber craze. Maybe it’s because I’m 28 but after hearing about his statement I would have to give the kid two thumbs up! For being in the position he is in he is going to get asked all kinds of crazy questions like that but what is wrong with a teenager having an opinion on the matter??? I think all teens should really think about things like this and decide what they believe. Justin, I think what you said took guts and I praise you for it!!!

      • David

        Retarded Neanderthal

      • Shannon

The opinions of teens do matter, but Rolling Stone should not have asked. And then they go and misquote him on top of it.
If this Grayson Chance kid makes it big next, I don’t put it past RS to ask him about the morning after pill.

    • shantaisha gray

ha this is shantaisha gray but you con call me shay if you like to can you give a call at 8502841066 or 8504594091

      • K

Dude, Bieber isn’t reading this. Don’t ever post your phone number on the internet.

      • nate

bieber is a bright kid. but i think he needs to be with his publicist at all times. they are coming at him from all sides.

      • shantaisha gray

        wat eva u white cracker

    • MelindaB

I can’t hate him, either. For one, he seems like a genuinely nice, thoughtful kid. He may use “like” a little more than I care for, but that’s a minor quibble. Hating him because he’s so ubiquitous seems silly–he can just as well make his money now, because odds are that he will fade in popularity as he (and his fan base) gets older. His music isn’t my cup of tea, nor my teenage daughter’s, so our house is relatively Bieber-free. Maybe that’s why I’m not bothered by him. :-)

    • Shannon

      Agreed.

  • erin

why did they have to ask a 14 year old about his opinions on abortion in the first place?

    • carriem

Agreed, Erin, why does it matter what he thinks?

      • scott

…maybe because he influences millions of other teenagers?

      • Shannon

Because Rolling Stone’s got magazines to sell.

    • jules

I know, right?? What an unsettling thing to ask a KID. For pete’s sake…ask him about his warbling, his hairdo, his fans. Not frickin’ abortion.

      • Bethany

I completely agree!!! I think that its totally inappropriate topic for a 16 year old, whether you love him, hate him, or love to hate him in this case it wasn’t completely his fault, he should have never even been asked!!!

      • k

16 year olds get abortions all the time..they need to know where they stand and have thought about it. If they are not old enough to express there opinion on it they should not be alloud to choose them especially without parental consent. I thought beiber handled himself well sharing his opinion respectfully while knowing he can’t understand how a person in that position would respond

    • S

Exactly. Some of the questions he was asked were a little strange for a child to be answering.

    • jaysin420

Well it’s all over the news today so they did their job. I blame the kids agent for putting him in that horrible situation.

    • UGH

Because his one hit is entitled, Baby Baby?
      *crickets*

      • Yo Yo

Gotta admit, UGH, this made me laugh.

    • Allison

Well, when one of MTV’s most popular shows is “16 and Pregnant,” his views on pregnancy and abortion might actually be relevant to his fans.

    • jessica

why did they even ask justin bieberabout abortation that btw justin bieber is 15 he was born on march 1st,1994
      i love justin bieber

      • Al

I hope they are teaching you math in school.

      • Lexi

Spelling and grammar too. Kids these days (and I’m only slightly older). It’s like they want to be as stupid as they possibly can!

      • M.S.

Learn how to count. According to your date here he is nearly 17.

    • Gia Leah

Many of the people making decisions in this country every single day about whether or not to have an abortion are 15. The girls that 15 year old boys impregnate are forced to have opinions and make life changing decisions on this issue. To write off the idea that a 15 year old boy could reasonably be asked to have a thought about it is sexist, naive, irresponsible and completely infuriating.

      • Adam S.

        THANK YOU.

So many people are dismissing his unsettling comments because of his youth. He’ll be 17 in less than a month. These are issues that are very relevant to people his age.

      • shannon82

I completely and whole heartedly agree that every person who is at even the most tender age to reproduce should certainly be made aware of these sensitive issues and should develop their own educated opinion, especially on the topics of abortion and practicing abstinance.

      • Rachel

I agree so much. He is almost 17. He SHOULD have an opinion on these things.

      • k

        totally right

    • judie

I think all children, teens, adults, EVERYONE should know EXACTLY what abortion is, how it is performed, what the long term effects of it is to the mother and the father and the painful death of a child, and the truth about this BUSINESS OF MURDER. Thank you for having the guts to say and believe what is right. Rape is a horrible, evil act. My heart bleeds for all those who have ever suffered such an event in their life. Abortion is not the answer. Adoption is. I have a sister-in-law, 7 cousins, and a nephew who were all adopted into our family. I thank God everyday that their mothers chose the life of their child over an abortion.

      • shannon82

Thank u judie for this well intended truth. There r a lot of individuals out in the world who need to know that they don’t have to kill their unborn child.

      • Melissa

Adoption is just as painful as abortion – particularly for the birth mother. I am an adoptee, and I am friends with several women who have had abortions or have given children up for adoption – the women after adoption are suffering MUCH more than the women post-abortion.

      • HW

I know that this isn’t a political forum, or one about morality, but I couldn’t not leave a response. It’s not about the pain to the mother, it’s about the existence of the child. And don’t you think that you SHOULD suffer more after an abortion than after giving up a child for adoption?

    • drowsy

He may not ever have a uterus or know what it’s like to be pregnant…but he was a baby once. And I’m sure he is glad his mother didn’t kill him. Way to go, Justin! It takes a lot of courage to stand up for life these days.

    • sterfonstuff

Rolling Stone obviously asked him this question with the hope that he would give a dumb answer that would get attention. A desperate method, but I guess it worked.

    • Chad

‘Cause of all the ridiculous sex he’s having, some of it probably with girls.

    • shantaisha gray

i said the same thing why would they ask a 14 year old that dumd azz people do that to make some people mad

  • MsDaisy

Dear Justin, when you grow a uterus, get back to me.

    • Keziah

You DON’T have to have a uterus to have an opinion on the subject, or did you think women got pregnant one their own? I don’t see why they asked a child this question but I think he gave a honest and brave opinon

      • shannon82

HE IS NOT A CHILD! So many teenagers get pregnant and have to make the tough decision on whether or not to keep their child! Get educated and then form an opinion that is worth sharing…

      • Rachel

He is not a f*cking child. Gosh he’s 17. Since when is that considered a child?? You guys never called Miley Cyrus a “child” when she was that age, but everyone calls Justin Bieber a child

    • Ambee

I feel like him saying that he hasn’t been in that position could have easily alluded to him not having a uterus or not having been raped. The boy fully admitted it was a situation he couldn’t put hiself in.

He was asked the question. Anyone can be asked. This seems like the silliest response to get riled up about in the slightest.

    • UGH

He practically has one with that awful hairdo…

  • ellie

Can he please just go away already?

  • JJ

This seems like a bizarre topic to bring up in a Justin Bieber interview. I also find it odd that Rolling Stone would ask a 16 yr old questions about politics – especially when he’s not old enough to vote nor can he vote in the US as he’s not a US Citizen.

    • Britt

Exactly. It is Rolling Stone’s fault entirely for even bothering to ask a 16 year old Canadian about political topics in the US.

      • shannon82

Abortion is not a political topic. It is a globally moral one. End of story.

    • John

So Canada is 100% in agreement on abortion one way or the other, no need to discuss it? Hardly see why citizenship is relevant.

    • Rachel

He’s almost 17… he should be aware of these topics. Also, he can vote in Canada… and abortion takes place there as well

  • Elizabeth

You when you have to try so hard to be controversial and do things out of the blue and not in your normal routine, then you aren’t cutting edge – just saying Rolling Stone.

  • jt

Yes, how cool to make an eleven yr. old rape victim have the baby and face public ricicule.

  • Dereck Mejias

I agree with Justin 100%.As for the author’s comment about a foetus being a bunch of cells, well, indeed we are all just a bunch of cells, and dying cells at that as someone previously wrote. So its its fine to kill a baby in ts mother’s womb, where do we draw the line?
As for the case of rape, less than 1% of all abortions are due to rape (check out the statistics), most are done as a form of contraception. Also, there are many families willing to adopt the baby of a rape victim, so killing the innocent child should not be seen as the only solution, to reiterate a previous author’s point. Bieber, you ot guts standing up for those unborn babies who can’t stand up for themselves and say “please don’t kill me mommy!” and “please don’t drill a hole in my head and suck out my brains mommy!” Yes, that happens and is legal in the good old USA.

    • MercuryBlue

Um, I don’t know where you’re getting your statistics from but I’d double-check that if I were you. Most abortions aren’t done as a form of conception- and most patients aren’t “stupid, slutty” teenage girls. They’re women in long-term, committed relationships whose birth control has failed. These just aren’t the women the pro-lifers choose to put on their poster boards. Also, I know very much about adoption and am a foster parent. The foster care system is a joke, there AREN’T as many people wanting to ‘scoop up’ babies as you think. And every day, you read about innocent little kids who are killed by idiotic parents who never should have brought them into the world in the first place. If you’re pro-life, fine… but, jeez, at least do us the courtesy of getting your facts straight.

      • Michelle

If you don’t want to get pregnant, don’t have sex. If you do have sex, be prepared for the consequences. Having an abortion because “oops, my birth control failed” is not an excuse.

      • Zack

Right, because people only have sex because they want to have a baby. Makes perfect sense.

      • Ali

Where did you get your information that “they’re women in long-term comitted relationships whose birth control has faled”?

    • Beth

I see Dereck survived having his brains sucked out.

    • Nicholette

      You are AWESOME!!

    • M.S.

You’re pulling stats from a christian site or something. Most abortions are done because of “social reasons.” Now don’t take the word “socical” out of context. The high end of the social reasoning is that the parent to be doesn’t have the means to support another mouth. I for one think it’s cruel to bring a child into the world which you can’t support. On the adoption topic, there are tons of parents willing to adopt but that doesn’t mean the children are just picked right up. These kids usual spend years in the system all the while becoming more and more damaged. That again is cruel. One final point, all of you religious folks want to say that is atheists and hooligans that abort babys, here are some stats for ya,
Women identifying themselves as Protestants obtain 37.4% of all abortions in the U.S.; Catholic women account for 31.3%, Jewish women account for 1.3%, and women with no religious affiliation obtain 23.7% of all abortions. 18% of all abortions are performed on women who identify themselves as “Born-again/Evangelical”. Looks like you religious zealots aren’t so holy after all.

      • judie

All sites are not exact. Are you getting yours from Planned Parenthood? They only made 3.5 Million dollars from our government last year alone. Oh and by the way it is a BUISNESS!

    • Rachel

I agree and don’t think abortions should be allowed for just anyone. But if someone gets raped, like a 13 year old girl, I don’t think she should have to go through torture giving birth. In cases of rape, it is different. Someone harmed them, and they shouldn’t be FORCED to have the child and then figure out where to give it for adoption whatever.

    • JJ

are u a religious person yes i agree abortion is wrong but who knows what this guy is doing behind the curtain. hollywood is like that they pretend to stand up for one thing and they do something else.the point that mother having abortion when they are raped u have a sister or wife who are raped by some one who is hiv postive and let me know how u would react or please! i know that god expect us to do what is right but we should not judge women we do not know what they go throug on a daily basis.

  • Keziah

    sad but true

    • NROE

I think the question was definitely too heavy for a 16yr old popstar, but then again who are the main readers of Rolling Stones magazine? Older people that care about his opinion on heavier topics, such as abortion. I personally do not support abortion but i can see why people may choose that option, because lets face it not everyone lives in a financially stable country like Canada (where i am) where we have services that allow a rape victim, single mother take care of their children through such tough times. Pattie (Justin’s mother) could have easily chosen the abortion path, but she didnt, which i believe is also the reason why Justin doesn’t support abortions. But for the people that dont live in countries with such social services, unfortunately abortion is the only option. So even though i don’t support abortion, people are entitled to their reasons.

  • lkm

I don’t agree with him, but I can see how the son of teen parents might be a little hesitant to support abortion.

  • rush

i agree with so many of you, why the hell would rolling stones even ask such a heavy question from a 16 year old pop star, it doesnt matter if its a guy or a girl, everyone is entitled to their openion, however with justin being as young as he is and in the position that he is in(popstar and nothing else) i dont understand why he was asked the question in the first place, as if it really matters what he says/ or thinks. was it so that ew and all these other magazines could pick it up and quote it for three days strait until rolling stones came out with the “whole” quote. obviously this only happened so that magazines could be sold. its ridiculouc

  • h

    He should have been aborted

    • NROE

      Thats a little rude….

    • Sue

      What a hateful statement.

      • Laura

Ok, I don’t like his music or anything, not a fan, but seriously? that’s a really horrible statement to make about anybody, much less a 16 year old kid.

  • Jason L

He has a right to speak his belief. I agree with him completely on his abortion statement, but still I believe we all have a freedom to believe the way we want. I recommend anyone reading this to look up the statistics on how many abortions are because of incest or rape. You will be amazed at how low the number really is.

    • Zack

Let’s assume that the statistics are low. We should still take away that choice for the victims to make?

      • Ali

        Hard cases make bad law.

  • kwerner

Go Justin! Way to have scruples. Don’t let the culture and your stardom change you.

    • UGH

Waaaaay too late for that one.

    • jj

dont judge people we all have to give account for our actions

  • omg

who would care to know his opinion on an issue so complex? seriously. look at his face. it’s like he might have trouble figuring out how to tie his shoes.
