'RuPaul's Drag Race': It's all about the big girls this season

Rupaul-Drag-Race-MimiThings are getting real heavy on RuPaul’s Drag Race this season. And that’s mostly because, so far, the show has mostly focused on its three delightful big-girl contestants: Mimi Imfurst, Delta Work, and Stacy Layne Matthews. Not that I’m complaining—at all. That’s certainly been a very good thing. And while the headline to this mini recap of last night’s episode might lead you to believe that a big girl won the competition, those of you who watched know that’s certainly not the case. In fact, not only did a big girl not win the competition, but a big girl got sent home. (Collective gasp!) It was a not-very-sad bye-bye for — SPOILER ALERT — Mimi Imfurst, who turned into a freakish Dragzilla and lifted India Ferrah up over her head during the lip-sync-for-your-liiiiife portion of the hour. “GET HER OFF ME!” India hilariously growled, in one of the most entertaining few seconds of RuPaul’s Drag Race so far in its three-season run. The above photo illustrates The Evening’s No. 1 Most Ridiculous Moment. I sort of stared at the screen after that and wondered: Did that really just happen?

“Mimi Imfurst,” RuPaul said, just before telling the beastly queen to sashay away, “drag is not a contact sport.” (But honestly, wouldn’t it be more fun if it were?) Mimi Imfurst will be missed on that Main Stage, but you pretty much knew she was toast last night as soon as the episode turned to everyone hating on her just a few minutes into the hour. “Mimi’s always been teetering throughout the competition,” Ru said after her Main Stage walk, “and I think she may have gone to the other side.” Ain’t that the truth. As you might imagine, the two runner-up moments of the evening also featured one or all of the trio of big girls. Like I said, it’s all about the big girls this season! The Evening’s No. 2 Most Ridiculous Moment: When the three big girls teamed up and posed together, Charlie’s Angels style. I mean, just look at this gloriousness:

Can you even on any earthly level? And The Evening’s No. 3 Most Ridiculous Moment: That shake-weight silliness between Delta Work and RuPaul. What the…? No explanation is needed on my part, just enjoy the photo:

As for the few minutes of the episode that were not big-girl focused, we saw a few good things, in my opinion: Shanglea slowly became more tolerable and somewhat legit at drag; Raja looked amazing as her “MILF/cougar who is waiting poolside for the pool boy to clean it up” (plus: those legs!); and Alexis Mateo was cute and deadly (in the best way) during the exercise video portion of the challenge, very deservingly winning the competition and immunity for next week.

Also: Isn’t it kind of strange when LaToya Jackson is a guest judge on a show and doesn’t manage to weasel her way into of the best moments of the evening? I guess that’s just Drag Race for you—even detective LaToya is a non-story here. (And how great was fitness guru Susan Powter as a guest judge/mentor person? She wanted everything to be over the top!)

Do you all agree with last night’s elimination of Mimi Imfurst and coronation of Alexis Mateo as the winner? What are you loving or hating so far this season? Any other thoughts? Speak up and sound off in the comments below. And tell me about The Evening’s Most Ridiculous Moment(s), in your opinion.

Watching Mimi lose it during the lip sync is even more hilarious the second time around. I am in tears. She thought it was a wrestling match.

The competition is really shapying up, and we’re getting a better feel of personalities.

Raja is getting on my last nerves with her stank attitude and superiority complex. She is not the best thing to happen to drag whether she knows it or not. Picking on Stacy is getting old.

    • Mundo

So glad mimi is out! she’s such a winney cry baby, she never smiled on the runway. Did she really think she was gonna win the lip sync?

      • Anti-Intellect

It appears her game plan was to go into attack mode? Which is odd considering how visibly displeased Ru was after Phoenix v. Shangela.

      • ATLgroove

Did you mean Venus v. Shangela? Cause Phoenix went up against Delta last week in the LSFYL.

      • Cheryl Stewart

Yes your right I was glad when they sent Delta packing she is a truble maker

  • gato

Sick of Raja too. She wii probably be in the final 3…bleak

    • John L.

same here. I couldn’t help but roll my eyes at her when she trash talked Stacy. Her outfit was laughably bad and her makeup looked jacked up.

    • Snissy Pattermash

A flock of birdies tells me Raja’s gonna be in the top 1!

    • Bladimir

Well I will not be surprised if “RAJA” win this season. Him is actually the make-up artist of Tyra Banks. His name is “Sutan” in America Next Top Model.

  • meToo

HILARIOUS ep. I can’t remember when was the last time I laughed this hard. I had to rewind the BATTLE. Thank you dvr!

  • eliott256

I’m enjoying this season, but I think it’s missing any of the big personalities like last season had (JuJuBee, Raven etc), they’re finally coming out their shell though, so maybe there’s still hope.

I will say that I’m finding the lipsyncing for your life very uncomfortable this season, usually it’s a bit of silly fun with an over the top dramatic moment every so often, wigs falling off and the likes, but this season the girls all seem to be taking it too far.

  • Soldier

This season’s crop of Queens is grade A Ugly! Yuk! And the personalities are dumb and dumber!

  • Bella Mari

Thank goodness Mimi is GONE! That Queen is tired and down right too much. I am all for personalities but she is a legend in her own mind. I was ready for her exit since the first week. As for Raja I agree I am over her. I miss the season two beauties this batch is not at all pretty well except for Mrs.
Mariah and I love Delta Work. Good luck ladies.

  • caitybelle

ugh, i can’t stand alexis. she’s a local queen in my area, and according to friends who know her her bitch routine is not just for the cameras. She’s just a cheap imitation of Raven (who at least was likable SOME of the time).

  • Mc Prophet

I too find myself feeling nostalgic when the Absolut Cocktail commercials come on (we miss you Tati!) and I am completely underwhelmed by this group of queens. I think Raja so badly wants to play the “Raven” role but the main difference there is Raven had the talent to back up the shade-throwing. Raja just looks (and sounds!) like a boy in a dress.

  • TrueladyMD

I agree with the comments above. The drag queens meem a lot meaner than they have been in the past. I still like Raja but the attitude is getting old. She seems insecure around Stacy. I think Raja knows she can never pass for a woman and Stacy makes her uncomfortable. It reminds me of the Raven/Tatianna conflict last year.

    • Cheryl Stewart

I think you are right about Raja they should have never let Stacy go
I am realy upset with Ru’s about that one.

  • Belle

My new faux lesbian crush is Raja. Her legs are AMAZING. I swear she could give Naomi Campbell a run for her money on the runway. But yes, I am tired of people picking on Stacy. Even though I have to admit when she admitted she had sex with straight men who think she is a real woman I got a clear mental picture (ewww). Well, there are alot of chubby chasers out there. My other favorites besides Raja, are Manila, Delta & Mariah. Hello, India’s tatas cost her $600? And they are not even real? Good lord, I’m glad I was born with them. I still think no one catch touch the ladies of season 1. All Hail, Bebe, Miss Nina, Shannel & Ongina.

  • pauld

    Raja Raja!

  • meToo

Stacy keeps asking for trouble. She had sex with a straight guy and didn’t tell him she was a drag. FAIL

    • Mia

Absolutely! That is a no no. Yes, there are “straight” (I use the term loosely) dudes who have a fetish for drag queens but they know underneath the makeup & tent, there is a pole.

    • Cheryl Stewart

So what’s wrong with that the brother did not turn it downlow if you know what I mean

  • fireislanded

Mimi….you don’t need them. You’re still one of our top Diva’s in Manhattan and Cherry Grove FI.

    • Jack

      Eek. You can have her!

      • Jingjai

Thanks Brent, hope you guys can restore our bloveed, fun and informative forums, too bad they’re down now and there are also other features missing on the website, like the CBG Issue Spotlight, about which we were writing a while ago

  • RicAnthony

I am tired of Raja as well. I absoluetly LOVE Alexis Mateo. I am also loving the fact that there are 3 Latinas there this season.

    • Teviolo

There is nothing loeeilvr than flowering things climbing and twining. I do agree with your mum;s philosophy. I’m working hard at training clematis and roses to do that too.

  • Joe R

POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT??: Logo’s NewNowNext Awards includes Carmen Carrera as a nominee for Most Addictive Reality Star. Why Carmen and not, say, Raja or Shangela, who’ve both made more noise so far this season? Is this a little wishful thinking on the part of Logo, or perhaps a spoiler that Carmen wins the season, and will then be ready to accept her NewNowNext Award when they are handed in out April, after Drag Race has concluded? Fishy, to me.

    • Debbie

As for Logo’s NewNowNext including Carmen, that really doesn’t foreshadow her winning the competition. Last year Jujubee was nominated for the same category, and we all know how that turned out unfortunately!
