Of all the trailers that debuted during the Super Bowl, I was most excited about the 30-second spot for Captain America: The First Avenger. It was cool to get a better sense of the movie’s look. (Apparently, this is going to be the muddiest comic book movie since Swamp Thing.) However, one part of the trailer stuck out to me: The half-a-millisecond appearance of Cap’s arch-nemesis, the Red Skull. A superhero movie is only as good as its villain, and considering that Hugo Weaving already played one of the great modern action-movie Big Bads (Agent Smith in The Matrix), my hopes are pretty high. But there’s every possibility that the Skull could look ridiculous onscreen. (See: the Red Skull in the better-left-forgotten 1990 Captain America, who looked like an evil fascist muppet.)
It’s hard to judge based on one second of footage, but having closely-examined the Skull’s brief appearance frame-by-frame, I’m a little bit optimistic that they managed to get the Skull right. The crimson-sinewy look is straight out of the comic book, but the face is also recognizably Weaving’s — kind of like how you could still see Bill Nighy underneath Davy Jones’ tentacles in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, or how Tim Roth still looked like Tim Roth underneath a mountain of ape makeup in Planet of the Apes: This Movie Actually Happened.
The rest of the trailer looked pretty nifty, although Digital-Skinny Chris Evans will stay with me in my nightmares for years. PopWatchers, what did you think of the trailer? Think Weaving can actually pull off the red cranium/scar tissue look? Refresh your memory by watching the trailer below:

‘Captain America’ poster: Dark mud, bright shield, and an intriguing tagline

Like a skull that’s red.
More like the Red Muscle head.
I was expecting Tom Brady!
I liked the Benjamin Buttonesque puny Steve Rogers.
Wow! A machine that turns ordinary men into hotties! This is the sort of thing the government should be financing!
I already have one such machine in my basement. It’s called a BOWFLEX.
Win.
Really? I thought the Bowflex turned guys into delusional morons who need to spend money to look good.
LOL @ Dan. Best reply ever.
This had me rolling. Thanks for the laugh!
@Dan, yer prolly thinking of the Tower200.
AKA: the thing in people’s basement that is used to hang old coats on….
Looking cool! I was also happy to see Dum Dum and the howling commandows behind cap. Though conspicuously…no Nick Fury…hmm. Is he not going to have ww2 origins in these movies?
Looks great. Impressed with skinny Evans and I’m looking forward to both Marvel Studios’ movies
How’s the Red Skull look ?
Evil.
Looks like Frank Langella from that old ‘Masters Of The Universe’ movie…except red.
I am officially amped up for this movie (and it may or may not have anything to do with Chris Evans abs)
Seriously though, Red Skull looks really good. It looks like a job well done.
Looked excellent! This movie is going to be awesome.
Yes.
…to the comment re: Frank Langella. (Posting too hastily over here.)
My first thought was: “why is Hellboy in this movie?”
While it’s fun to poke fun at Burton’s “Planet of the Apes” I have no problem with saying that it wasn’t bad.
Burton had a no-win situation. Had he made a true remake using the same story and characters as the original, he would have been whipped for not doing something original. Since he chose to be different, everyone is saying “he should have kept the story and characters”.
Besides, much like the Star Wars prequels, it made a butt-load of cash yet nobody saw them because they were bad.
Instead of space helmets, the astronauts wore space hats.
Well being one of the biggest Red Skull fans there is one major flaw you could’t see in the trailer Red Skull has ears! I saw an early release of Captain America Halloween costumes and the Red Skull mask had ears. I hope they goo back and remove the ears but I don’t see it happening. I love the look of his face but I’m afarid it’s going to be like baby new year in the Rudolph the red nose reindeer with baby New Year when the ears pop out we are going to laugh
i been look forward to this movie every since Marvel “killed” Cap I think that They chose the best actors to play an iconic hero and villain. Hugo Weaving will kick ass as Red Skull and Chris Evans will be great as Cap.
since they’re using Marvels’ Ultimates as a base for this story we will not see Nick Fury in this movie because He has ties with The First Gulf War and the origin of Wolverine in that story line
