Oscars 2011: Diary of a red carpet reporter

Oscasr-red-carpetImage Credit: Jose Flores/LandovLet me start by first acknowledging that there are far worse jobs than being a red carpet reporter. Chilean miner I am not, but as with all paying gigs, there are drawbacks. One of the biggest being that no one really wants to know the truth about what you do. No one wants to see the dream dashed, the hero fall, the mirage disappear. Even after 15 years of explaining to my family what I do, my mom still asks what Julia Roberts is really like as if we’re besties who hike Runyon Canyon on the weekend. Long-lost junior high pals reconnected by Facebook confuse working an awards show with attending one. Once a stranger on a plane commented about how cool it must be to get to borrow Neil Lane diamonds. She obviously had me confused with a Bachelor contestant. It’s often wrongly assumed you’re partaking in the glitz and glamour instead of being just one small part of the machine responsible for its creation and maintenance. Fans want to believe the hype, and no more so than on Oscar night. READ FULL STORY »

'Dumb & Dumber' sequel 'is in motion': Would you see a follow-up starring Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels?

164040__dumbImage Credit: Everett CollectionJust when we thought the Dumb & Dumber franchise couldn’t get any dumber — thanks to 2003′s ill-advised, non-Farrelly Brothers-affiliated Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd — Peter and Bobby Farrelly aim to do something like this to totally redeem it: Speaking to Moviehole, Bobby Farrelly hinted at a possible sequel to the 1994 hit film, and, thankfully, that sequel would see the return of Dumb & Dumber‘s original stars. Said Bobby: “If we could get those two guys back together, Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels that might be a worthwhile sequel — and that ball is in motion. We’re starting to think about what those two dimwits would be doing 20 years later in life, and hopefully we’ll be able to come up with something worthy of a sequel.”

EW has confirmed with the Farrelly Brothers’ rep that the ball is indeed in motion on a Dumb & Dumber sequel, which leads us to question: Holy hell, it’s been almost 20 years since the movie came out?! How did I get so old?! And: Do we even want to see Dumb & Dumber: Man-Boys of a Certain Age? READ FULL STORY »

Who should host next year's Oscars?

next-oscar-hostImage Credit: A.M.P.A.S.We know, some of you aren’t done debating how well Anne Hathaway and James Franco did, but considering commenters in our Oscars live blog were already looking ahead to 2012 during last night’s ceremony, we think it’s a fair question: Who should host next year’s Oscars? Jennifer Garner remembers late director Gary Winick

Filed under: News and tagged:

Gary-WinickImage Credit: Everett CollectionGary Winick was an independent filmmaker who was at the forefront of the movement to make movies using low-budget digital video. He was also a Hollywood director who made films like Letters to Juliet, Charlotte’s Web, and the overlooked gem 13 Going on 30 (the age-swapping romcom which earned an A- from EW critic Owen Gleiberman.) Winick passed away over the weekend due to undisclosed causes. EW caught up with 13 Going on 30 star Jennifer Garner, who talked about what it was like to work with Winick: READ FULL STORY »

Zach Galifianakis to host 'Saturday Night Live' March 12. That's one Saturday I won't be bored to death.

Zach-GalifianakisImage Credit: Dana Edelson/NBCHere’s something that is so Raven: NBC has confirmed that Zach Galifianakis is set to host Saturday Night Live‘s March 12 episode with musical guest Jessie J. This will be the Hangover Part II and Bored to Death star’s second time hosting — and, hopefully, not his last. Perhaps it’s because I’m yearning for the day when Galifianakis plays an alpaca message board surfer on the show (or Wolf Blitzer at Burning Man, since they both work) but I’m hoping that the actor eventually joins SNL‘s Five Timers Club. 'Thundercats' reboot: Check out the trailer

Filed under: TV and tagged: , ,

Cartoon Network just debuted the trailer for the network’s upcoming rebooted version of Thundercats. The beloved ’80s cartoon has been given a serious anime makeover, which basically means that the already-bright color spectrum of the original show has been turned up to an insane, disco-rainbow, Lady-Gaga-unfiltered neon explosion. I didn’t watch the original show, but I’ve always been intrigued by Thundercats‘ mix of fantasy, sci-fi, and cute animals wearing badass space armor, and although there isn’t any dialogue in the trailer, the look of the new series is certainly interesting. Check out the trailer below: READ FULL STORY »

Stylist Rachel Zoe gives us the scoop on Anne Hathaway's eight Oscars outfits

rachel-zoeFashion talk is always a huge part of the Oscars aftermath, but co-host Anne Hathaway’s whopping eight costumes changes brought style chatter to another level. We talked to the woman behind Hathaway’s looks, super-stylist Rachel Zoe, who selected the seven ensembles with associate Jill Lincoln. Oscar's after-party fashion: What did you think?

zoe-saldanaNow that we’ve digested the sparkles, the lace, and the feathers, we can set our sartorial sights on the other big fashion highlight of the evening — the after-parties. And though we appreciate Mila Kunis and Jennifer Lawrence‘s contributions to the main show’s red carpet, with the exception of Cate Blanchett, this year’s ceremony wasn’t quite the same without the fashionistas (love ‘em or hate ‘em) like Diane Kruger, January Jones and Zoe Saldana. Thankfully, the Avatar star graced us with her presence at the Vanity Fair after-party in a feminine, sheer red number that quelled our appetites — and offered a vintage Victorian look without going overboard.

Other stunners included Selena Gomez and Marisa Tomei, who redeemed herself for her crazy Oscar get-up. And, of course, there were the low-lights as well. Let’s just say Emma Stone should be glad that she didn’t walk the main event in this mullet number and shaggy ‘do.

Check out out gallery and let us know what you think of these post-party looks!

Reese Witherspoon's Oscar dress: Channeling Julia? Or Barbie?

Filed under: Movies, TV and tagged: , , ,

barbie-oscar-dressImage Credit: A.M.P.A.S.; Chris Weeks/Getty ImagesReese Witherspoon presented at the Oscars last night wearing a gorgeous Armani Prive gown — a look we awarded an impressive A+ — but many of you have pointed out its similarity to another knock-out Oscars dress: The Valentino Julia Roberts wore in 2001 when she picked up her statue for Erin Brockovich. I, however, choose to think the actress was channeling a different legend: Vintage Barbie. There was something about that swooped high ponytail and form-fitting — yet conservative — dress that made me want to see if her fingers separated and throw her in a dusty box with an old Jem doll that looks far too much like a man to not wonder what kind of powers Synergy possesses. Oscars: Whose career will you deep-dive now? And: The best of Colin Firth interviews on YouTube!

Filed under: Movies and tagged: ,

Colin-FirthImage Credit: A.M.P.A.S.As we all know, an Oscar win can give a film a mass audience, and an actor newly obsessive fans. After this year’s Academy Awards, whose oeuvre have you been inspired to explore more thoroughly? Maybe you’ve already moved a few films to the front of your Netflix queue, or perhaps you’re using your lunch hour to watch interviews on YouTube. Best Actor winner Colin Firth is the lucky recipient of my focus this year, which means I will finally be seeing both A Single Man (which garnered him an Oscar nod last year) and The Last Legion (which required him to wear a leather breastplate). In the meantime, I can recommend watching the talk show appearances embedded below:  READ FULL STORY »
