Hulu's growing pains might mean shift to cable-style subscription. But do we still need Hulu?

Filed under: News, Television, TV and tagged: ,

hulu-logoHulu’s future remains up in the air thanks to all the cooks in its Internet kitchen: According to a Wall Street Journal article today, the site’s owners are “increasingly at odds over Hulu’s business model,” and that Fox and ABC might pull their programming. But things could get even crazier than that: READ FULL STORY »

Anne Meara and Jerry Stiller explain the Kardashians

Filed under: TV and tagged:

Don’t you love it when parents or grandparents wade into the shallow end of pop culture? Chances are, though, your folks aren’t nearly as clever as Anne Meara and Jerry Stiller, who tackle the Kardashian phenomenon in their latest Stiller & Meara web short. Meara has no love for Bruce Jenner’s extended brood, calling them “drecky people”: “They’re Snooki stretched out.” Leave it to Stiller to be the informed voice of reason and sensitivity. He’s so calm — serene, even. Watch the clip below. READ FULL STORY »

This week's cover: Oscars!

1140-1141-COVERIf there’s one thing this week’s Academy Award nominations accomplished, it was an instant leveling of the Oscar-season playing field. After playing second fiddle to critics-award and Golden Globes champ The Social Network, The King’s Speech rebounded with 12 Academy Award nominations compared to eight for Network.

So who will win the big prize on Feb. 27? It may come down to whether the Academy votes with its heart or its head. We talked to two of the masterminds behind this year’s Oscar front-runners — The King’s Speech director Tom Hooper and The Social Network producer Scott Rudin — and got their passionate thoughts on why their films will walk away with the trophy. See which argument you buy. READ FULL STORY »

'Cougar Town': Happy Big Present Day

cougar-town Our favorite cul-de-sac crew returned last night to embrace their inner child (well, Jules’ inner child) with a game of Sardines in a Can. After the gang’s movie night got canceled, Travis told his wine-loving companions that a great way for adults to reduce stress levels is to embrace activities they loved as children. (If this is true, I demand a Lite-Brite be stationed at my desk from here on out.) And although I’m a little disappointed we didn’t get to see Jules feel smart and depressed about the world instead of dumb and happy like always, their game of hide-and-seek was clearly a better idea than movie night. 'Real Housewives of Orange County' promo: Boobs, brawling, and bawling

What a fun, sexy time the Real Housewives of Orange County will have season 6! Stripper poles! Gold-digging! Vaginal Rejuvenation! Bikinis! More bikinis! Even more bikinis! My god, how many bikinis must one housewife own?! But based on this promo for the season — which premieres March 6 — there’s also plenty of clouds hovering over the Real Housewives‘ sunny existences: Vicki’s marriage with Don begins to fall apart, Tamra and Jeana engage in a poolside fight (like there’s any other kind), and Tamra fights away the paparazzi while going to court for a restraining order. (The latter is an interesting scene, since we very rarely see the show reference the fact that these women are, well, sort of famous.) Also, two new ladies: Former model Peggy Tanous and gay Brazilian fitness instructor Fernanda Rocha. Feel the need to suck yourself into a dark hole of depression and diamonds? Well, click the jump! Chloe Moretz to guest on '30 Rock'... but as what?

Filed under: Television, TV and tagged: , ,

Chloe-MoretzImage Credit: Jon Furniss/WireImage.comChloe Moretz, star of Kick-Ass and Let Me In, is in New York City this week filming an episode of NBC’s 30 Rock. We know this because she tweeted it. And because the network confirms it. The show’s rep, however, won’t reveal what part 13-year-old Moretz is playing. Care to guess, PopWatchers? I’m thinking maybe Liz gets some kind of Sliding Doors episode, and we find out what her life would have been like if she hadn’t been head writer at TGS — and Moretz plays her smart-mouthed daughter. Or, maybe it’s time for a Pete-centric episode – and she plays his smart-mouthed daughter. READ FULL STORY »

Excess Hollywood: Ridley Scott's 'Prometheus' to hit theaters summer 2012

  • Adjust your calendars accordingly: Ridley Scott’s Prometheus — starring Noomi Rapace — has been moved from March 9, 2012 to June 8, 2012. [THR]
  • More on Scott: Ridley and Tony Scott will produce The Drivers, a drama set in the 1960s surrounding the 24 Hours of Le Mans, a day-long car race. That’s a lot of Cheetos.
  • Mark Ivanir has replaced Jeremy Northam in A Late Quartet — also starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Catherine Keener, and Christopher Walken — which follows a string quartet celebrating their 25th anniversary who fight to stay together. All they need is more cowbell. Too overused? Then how about we celebrate their 25 with a passport to Florida? [Variety]
  • Susanna Lo announced at Sundance she will direct Manson Girls, a film starring Taryn Manning, Heather Matarazzo, Tania Raymonde, and Monica Keena about eight women who followed Charles Manson. [Associated Press]
  • Magnolia announced it has acquired I Melt With You, an ensemble film starring Thomas Jane, Rob Lowe, Jeremy Piven, Christian McKay, Carla Gugino, and Sasha Grey. The story follows four drug-using friends (Jane, Piven, Lowe, and McKay) on a road trip in Big Sur, which can only play out like an after-school special.
  • Brian De Palma is set to direct Passion, a remake of the Gallic psychodrama hit Crime d’Amour. [Variety]
  • Roundabout Theatre Company announced that musical Death Takes a Holiday will open off-Broadway July 14, 2011. (Performances will begin June 10, 2011.) The musical follows a Prince who falls in love with an engaged women in an Italian villa. Oh no.

'Oregon Trail' and 'Carmen Sandiego' games coming to Facebook. In other news, productivity projected to hit all-time low.

My first memory of Oregon Trail is getting 30 minutes into my first game when I was about 8 years old and finding out my best friend had died of dysentery. Curious, I looked the word up in the Google book encyclopedia. Thank you, Oregon Trail, for the childhood scar. Still, every moment after that was a happy one, so I’m psyched that Oregon Trail is coming to Facebook Feb. 2. And as a further blow to any form of productive activity in my life, Carmen Sandiego will also make its Facebook debut on Feb. 9.

The games are being brought to Facebook by Blue Fang Games and The Learning Company, according to Blue Fang analyst Darius Kazemi, who wrote about the games’ return on his blog (via Huff Po).

The trailers for the games are below, and are likely to bring a tiny tear to your eye if you, like I, were one of those kids who zoomed through their computer exercises for a chance to play these in elementary school. READ FULL STORY »
