Johnny Weir officially comes out in new memoir

weirUntil now, Olympic figure skater Johnny Weir has always avoided confirming what he’s never actually tried to hide – he’s gay. But in his new memoir, Welcome to My World, Weir finally says it. In an excerpt in People, he speaks lovingly about the parents he’s said before raised him to have respect for others and himself. “My parents never made me feel odd, even though I definitely didn’t act like all the other kids,” he says. “That’s why I believed in myself.” He talks about the moment he first knew he was “different.” “Watching Richard Gere in Pretty Woman at the tender age of six was when I had first realized there was something different about me. I wanted to be Julia Roberts so badly. Kissing seemed like a weird thing to do, but I knew if I was going to do it, it would be with Richard Gere.”

He knew he was gay by the time he hit puberty, Weir writes, but it wasn’t until he was 16, that he first kissed a boy. READ FULL STORY »

Katy Perry to guest star on 'How I Met Your Mother.' How do you think she'll compare to the others?

katy-perrySorry. No How I Met Your Mother guest star will ever surpass Alexis Denisof, who first appeared on the show in 2006 and returned last week, as No. 1 in my heart. No one. After him, every other stunt casting has been but a minor blip on my I’m-still-not-over-Buffy radar. (I’ll get over that soon, by the way; I swear. Just let me, um…)

The good news for Katy Perry, who will be appearing in an upcoming episode as Zoey’s (Jennifer Morrison) “naïve and beautiful” cousin, is that the spot for No. 2 is still available. There’s tough competition, though.  READ FULL STORY »

Ted Williams on 'Today': 'This is a dream come true'

Golden-voiced Ted Williamswas on the Today show this morning, explaining more of his backstory and being warned about instant fame, courtesy of an overly earnest Matt Lauer. “[Meredith and I] both worry a little that a lot is happening very quickly, and some people might find that hard to deal with,” Lauer told Williams. Yep, let’s really slow down the not-being-homeless process. Williams says his “new sense of spirituality” will keep him sober and thoughtful through the strange fame rollercoaster. READ FULL STORY »

Sienna Miller latest to join Garry Marshall's all-star rom-com 'New Year's Eve'

Filed under: Movies and tagged: ,

Sienna-MillerImage Credit: Michael Tran/FilmMagic.comThe Brits just do large ensemble romantic comedies better. But maybe Sienna Miller will bring a touch of that effortless feel to Garry Marshall’s New Year’s Eve. According to Variety, she’s joined the cast that includes Robert De Niro, Hilary Swank, Sarah Jessica Parker, Michelle Pfeiffer, Jessica Biel, Ashton Kutcher, Abigail Breslin, and Til Schweiger. Like Valentine’s Day (and Love, Actually), multiple romantic story lines intersect, this time on New Year’s Eve in New York City. Valentine’s Day director Marshall is expected to return to his post, as is screenwriter Katherine Fugate. The plan is to release the film this December. READ FULL STORY »

Grimace, jingles, Lucky Charms, and the Captain: Day 3 of The Big Shill bracket game

Big-Shill-03A

O Captain, my captain. Or should that be Cap’n? Yes, the highly decorated military mascots are facing off in this round of the Big Shill Bracket Game, which celebrates the best advertising icons in pop culture. In this round, it’s rum vs. another sugar-based treat, plus scrawny white dudes: Mac Guy Justin Long, back when he was just semi-famous and the incessantly melodic Free Credit Report guy. But don’t leave out beloved biological wonder Grimace, the physical embodiment of loving milkshakes, or the similarly rotund but perhaps less jolly Michelin Man. Finally, are they always after your Lucky Charms, or do they just keep going and going and going? Check out the entire bracket here, and then cast your votes! READ FULL STORY »

The Sequel Map proves scientifically that the sequel is almost always worse than the original

Tagged:

johnny-deppImage Credit: Peter MountainThe simple truth is that sequels tend to be bad. Especially in the last 30 years of blockbuster filmmaking, cinema history has become strewn with miserable follow-ups to brilliant originals. (Exactly why sequels tend to be so bad is a difficult question, since every bad sequel is its own beautiful idiot snowflake.) Now, some scientific proof has arrived: Box Office Quant has posted a nifty Sequel Map that graphs the Rotten Tomatoes critical score of the original movie against the score of the sequel. Check out the result here.

The first thing you notice: The vast majority of sequels scored less well than the original movie (although kudos to Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan for being the most improved sequel.) The second thing you notice: Good lord, there are a depressing number of sequels. And I’m not just talking about big-budget disappointments like Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, either. Anyone remember Texasville, the sequel to The Last Picture Show? Admittedly, the graph only takes into account No. 2 movies — so, no threequels, no long-running franchises, no Casino Royale. (Though let’s be honest: You know that if threequels were on the graph, there’d be an even bigger trend towards mediocrity.)

But wait! Don’t lose hope, sequel-lovers. READ FULL STORY »

Ted Nugent on Eliot Spitzer's Alec Baldwin interview: 'What is this, 'Planet of the Apes' or CNN?'

Musician and outspoken conservative Ted Nugent is always passionate, sometimes clever, and occasionally batsh–. I’ll leave it to you to decide where his performance fell last night on Anderson Cooper 360. The man seems to think the idea of Alec Baldwin running for office is a little funny. (That’s his right.) And/or he thinks the idea that Eliot Spitzer has his own show on CNN is ridiculous. (I’m confident he’s not alone.) But I’m still struggling with his response to a video clip of Spitzer asking Baldwin about his political ambitions. “I don’t know what to laugh harder at: Alec Baldwin running for office or Eliot Spitzer doing the interview. I mean give me a break: What is this, Planet of the Apes or CNN?” Give a look: READ FULL STORY »

This Week's Cover: An exclusive 'American Idol' roundtable with Randy, Steven, Jennifer, and Ryan

With Simon Cowell’s ballyhooed exit (to bring his British talent show The X Factor Stateside this fall), Ellen DeGeneres departing after just one season, and Kara DioGuardi’s contract left in the dustbin, American Idol is suddenly in its most uncertain condition since its June 2002 debut. But in EW’s exclusive roundtable interview with host Ryan Seacrest, returning judge Randy Jackson, and new judges Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler, Idol‘s new team doesn’t appear to be sweating Life After Simon.

“It’s aged the show down a bit,” deadpans Seacrest of Cowell’s absence, while Jackson laughs. “There are less clouds of smoke. We start earlier. There’s less — what is that English dish he always ordered for lunch? Shepherd’s pie? He loves shephrerd’s pie.”

“No, it’s the blood pudding,” jokes Jackson, before he turns serious. READ FULL STORY »

Gail Simmons blogs 'Top Chef: All-Stars': Episode 5

Gail-SimmonsImage Credit: Kelsey McNeal/BravoAs told to Archana Ram.

I’ve had the privilege of Tom cooking for me pretty often. I’d like to say he’s my private chef, but he’s not! I’ve been to his restaurant, his house. I’ve learned a lot from him and he’s been a great mentor for me for the better part of a decade. But he was nervous to do this quick-fire challenge because it left him vulnerable to some extent. If he sliced his finger off or cooked for a long amount of time, he would’ve been embarrassed. But he nailed it, of course.

Angelo thought he could put a twist on it and make it not just a crudo. He thought if he added some special techniques that would elevate it. I think he was just getting cocky. READ FULL STORY »

People's Choice Awards: The most awkward moments (and the winners)

kristen-stewartImage Credit: Kevin Winter/Getty ImagesNo one will ever sum up what’s wrong with the People’s Choice Awards better than my former colleague Whitney Pastorek, who penned the 2009 dissertation “You showed up? Here’s a trophy!” But here’s what I’d like to add: If you truly want to do an awards show for “the people,” don’t spend two hours selling us projects and products (that I refuse to mention) in thinly-veiled embedded promotions, and don’t keep referring to us as “the people.” You are people, too, the last time I checked. It comes off condescending. READ FULL STORY »
