'Star Wars' on Blu-ray: Yay?

Categories: CES, Tech

new-hopeImage Credit: Lucasfilm, Ltd.Amid all the gadgets and gizmos and glitz at CES, there was but one thing announced by Darth Vader (seriously): Star Wars is coming to Blu-ray. Great! My chance to buy the beloved franchise in yet another format! Looks like I have to retire my “go laserdisc or go home” shirt.

Yes, Star Wars: The Complete Saga will be available in September, but if you don’t want to shell out for the blasphemes the prequels, it’ll also be available as the separate trilogies — although the original trilogy will only be available as the re-vamped “Special Edition” versions. The full, nine-disc set (which includes 30 hours of bonus features, and new deleted and alternate scenes) will be $139.99, and the individual trilogies will be $69.99. (The full set is currently $89.99 on Amazon. A steal!) READ FULL STORY »

Is 'DC Universe Online' the next 'World of Warcraft'?

Five years in the making and with a hefty $50 million production budget, DC Universe Online was finally released today. And, as reported by the LA Times, there’s a lot riding on the game’ success. Sony Online Entertainment used to dominate the online-games market — their Everquest series predated World of Warcraft by half a decade — but more recent games failed critically and commercially, all while Blizzard’s Warcraft series expanded to over 12 million subscribers. DCUO certainly looks impressive, and its superhero creation system could be addictive. But the question remains: Can any online RPG beat back the World of Wacraft juggernaut? READ FULL STORY »

Clip du jour: Harry Shum Jr., tWitch, and...lightsabers?

I knew Glee and So You Think You Can Dance would overlap in some capacity some day, but I didn’t think it would be with Mike Chang and tWitch having a lightsaber battle. But it is! Well, sort of. Harry Shum Jr. and Stephen “tWitch” Boss go en garde in this battle-to-the-death short film “3 Minutes.” Warning: contains some vivid violence. READ FULL STORY »

Kristin Chenoweth obsessed with 'The Hunger Games': Cast her, please!

Kristen-Chenoweth_240.jpg Image Credit: Sylvain Gaboury/PR PhotoYesterday, big-voiced, gum-drop-sized Kristin Chenoweth tweeted that someone had given her a copy of Suzanne Collins’ YA novel The Hunger Games, and she was now obsessed with all things Panem. Sing it! Well, this seems as good a time as any to say that I am obsessed with the idea of Chenoweth playing the role of Effie Trinket in Gary Ross’ adaptation. Pink-haired Effie, who leads with brisk efficiency and an almost false cheer, is District 12′s escort to the Hunger Games. The role, three-fourths broad comedy, a quarter wistful tenderness, seems right up Chenoweth’s sparkly-eyed street. Add Chenoweth to my dream cast of True Grit‘s dazzler Hallie Steinfeld — she’s young, I know, but that girl’s got some real steel to her — in the role of Katniss, and Cillian “Mr. Eyelashes” Murphy (circa 28 Days Later) as Cinna. Haymitch is my favorite of the bunch, despite and because of the fact that he’s such a wreck of as man, and the one character it will be hardest to see brought to the screen. I have such a crystallized view of him in my head already, it’s hard to picture an actor doing him justice. READ FULL STORY »

'Glee' nail polish: Yep, there's a Rachel Berry berry

Gleeks make themselves known in all sorts of ways: Killing it at karaoke, obsessing over a cappella arrangements, and now … with their manicures. Glee and Sephora are releasing a line of New Directions-themed nail polish on Feb. 3. I guess we can now let our fingers to the Gleeking? (I will still do it by singing “Don’t Rain on My Parade” at karaoke. You’re welcome, Brooklyn!) READ FULL STORY »

How many 3-D movies did you see in 2010? Will you see more or fewer in 2011?

Alice-in-WonderlandImage Credit: DisneyA recent study paints a bleak picture of the effect of overpriced movie tickets on the 3-D box office, saying, essentially, that moviegoers might not put up with swollen 3-D ticket prices for much longer.

Based on my own experience as a moviegoer, I’m inclined to agree with the study, which comes from Pricewaterhouse-Coopers via The Hollywood Reporter. In fact, I remember going across town last year so I wouldn’t have to pay to see Alice in Wonderland in 3-D. (And don’t even start with the “You paid subway fare to go across town” argument. It’s the principle.) READ FULL STORY »

Jim Carrey revives Fire Marshal Bill on 'Inside the Actors Studio'

Jim Carrey’s appearance on Inside the Actors Studio last night was kind of enthralling. On the heels of his highly-rated SNL appearance, it was cool to see him in a more serious mode, especially the way he gleefully dissected acting, comedy, and how he approaches the physicality of his characters. Oh, and he spoke as Fire Marshal Bill briefly: READ FULL STORY »

Oscars expand red carpet arrivals show from 30 to 90 minutes: Good thing or bad?

82nd-Annual-Academy-AwardsImage Credit: Alberto E. Rodriguez/Getty ImagesI say good thing.

If you don’t dig the Academy Awards, well, sorry, buddy. But if you’re one of tens of millions who tune-in to the show, invite your movie-loving friends over, and might pound the coffee table until your homemade Oscar cookies bounce onto the floor while arguing over the merits of The Social Network vs. The King’s Speech, then why not embrace a little more red carpet in your life? Let’s be honest — surprise hasn’t been much of a factor lately when it comes to opening the envelopes. A great deal of energy is devoted to forecasting who will claim one of those little golden guys, and Hollywood now tracks award season the way the National Weather Service tracks hurricane season. Jeff Bridges, Slumdog Millionaire, The Hurt Locker, Sandra Bullock getting trophies? To steal a line from Radiohead: No alarms and no surprises.

So where are the surprises? READ FULL STORY »

Sofia Vergara guests in Heather Morris rap video, 'Nuthin' But a Glee thing'

Proving there’s no competition between the supporting actresses on Glee and Modern Family, Sofia Vergara appears in a new FunnyorDie video that finds her, Glee‘s Heather Morris, Morris’ roommate Ashley Lendzion, and actress Riki Lindhome as Gleeks. Before the video erupts into Morris, Lendzion, and Lindhome borrowing Dr. Dre’s beat for the remake “Nuthin’ But a Glee Thing,” which they wrote, Vergara joins the ladies — wearing a red Sue Sylvester tracksuit — to talk about their favorite cast members. “Comparing Jane to the rest of the cast is like comparing the Great Barrier Reef with a piece of dogshit,” she says. “No offense, Heather.” READ FULL STORY »

Michael Douglas speaks candidly with Matt Lauer about cancer recovery and the paparazzi

Categories: Movies, Television

Michael Douglas, who was diagnosed with Stage IV throat cancer last August, sat down with Matt Lauer for an exclusive interview about his recovery, which aired this morning on Today. Watch it below. After intensive chemotherapy and radiation, the tumor is gone, Douglas says, but, “it’s not a total euphoria” yet. He’ll need to be checked on a monthly basis. His salivary ducts have been closed down as a result of the radiation for a year or two, so his mouth is very dry, particularly at night, and there’s still a fatigue factor. But he’s strong enough to work out and is getting his fingers ready to play Liberace in Steven Soderbergh’s biopic. Yes, he’s looking ahead — from what he knows about this type of cancer, he says hopefully, “I’ve got it beat.” READ FULL STORY »
