Gwyneth Paltrow is hosting Saturday Night Live this weekend, but I guess blizzards affect the ultra-rich and glamorous just as much as the normals: She got stuck in London and couldn’t make it to New York in time to do this week’s promos. Fred Armisen and Andy Samberg managed just fine without her, though: READ FULL STORY »

Smartphones that dazzle, dock, and control a home theater: Step aside, iPhone?
Sure, the VeriPhone is all any of us can talk about, but that’s far from the only drool-worthy phone making news in the last few days. There were puh-lenty of phones at CES to lust after.
The Motorola Droid Bionic is up at the top of that list: the 4.3-inch screen is bigger than the iPhone’s, and the 8-megapixel camera has me swooning. HDMI output on a phone? Uh, sure! The HTC ThunderBolt, which has comparable specs, is also a straight-up thing of beauty, plus unlike the iPhone, it has expandable storage. READ FULL STORY »
'The Biggest Loser': Top dogs and underdogs
The Biggest Loser is many things, but subtle ain’t one of them. Tonight’s episode drew a too-sharp division between the team being coached by Loser veterans Bob and Jillian and the team being coached by the mystery trainers, whose identities have yet to be revealed. (Though the lady trainer’s Noo Yawk accent and special affinity for boxing must narrow the field a little for people who know a lot about prominent fitness gurus, right?) READ FULL STORY »
Colonel Sanders, The Progressive Girl, and Charlie the Tuna: Day 8 of the Big Shill Bracket Game
Welcome to the eighth day of EW’s Big Shill Bracket Game, brought to you by interesting grooming habits! For this round — the last in the top 64 — Colonel Sanders’ Van Dyke beard faces off against the Empire Carpet Guy’s well-installed upper-lip hair, while the Brawny Lumberjack’s disappearing mustache battles Flo, the Progressive Girl’s mountainous poof. Check out the entire bracket here to see the other shillers battling for advertising supremacy, but first, click the jump to vote for your favorite in this hair-raising round! READ FULL STORY »
'Lights Out' season premiere: Could this be boxing's 'Friday Night Lights'?
Image Credit: Greg Gorman/FXHolt McCallany has the body of a bruiser, and his IMDB resume is peppered with supporting roles where he played a background heavy. But his eyes are instantly memorable: Big, sad-looking, and just a little bit angry, as if McCallany were Michael Shannon’s younger, less-crazy brother. McCallany’s popped up in various places over the last two decades — he achieved the uber-rare Law & Order hat trick, and shaved his head for David Fincher twice (in Alien 3 and Fight Club) — but the actor has finally found a great showcase for his gruff, terse charisma in Lights Out, the boxing series that debuted last night on FX. Although it’s too early to tell if the show can make such a cinematic sport into fodder for a weekly TV show, the premiere was an intriguing hour of television that mixed manly grit with some surprisingly affecting slice-of-Recession-life family darma. 'V': Jane Badler stole the show!
Image Credit: ABCOriginal V femme fatale Jane Badler strolled onto the greenscreen set of V 2.0 last night, and wowzer, she completely tore the greenscreen roof off the place. Besides finally giving Morena Baccarin’s Anna a worthy opponent, Mama Diana’s first scene was an info-dump of far-reaching mythology. We learned how the Visitors originally came to Earth — the detonation of the first Atomic Bomb was like a beacon shining across the universe. Even better, we learned that the seemingly all-powerful Visitors have a problem: We knew they had to figure out a way to keep their species going, but now we know they’re running out of time. “The next viable planet is too far away,” said Diana. “It’s Earth…or nothing.” READ FULL STORY »
James Bond returns! And not a moment too soon!
Image Credit: Karen BallardSomewhere in a hollowed-out volcano, a bald guy with a cat on his lap is doing a spit take. No matter how many times it looks as if James Bond has been killed for sure, the super-suave secret agent always manages to bounce back to life. Today’s announcement that the long-delayed 23rd installment of the 007 franchise was finally gearing up for production — with a release date of Nov. 9, 2012 — was the narrowest escape Bond has had since Goldfinger almost circumcised him with a laser beam. Last April, money troubles at debt-hobbled MGM forced Bond’s producers to suspend the film’s pre-production “indefinitely,” which triggered an avalanche of speculation. Would Bond ever return? Or would the most successful action series in motion picture history be tangled up for years in lawsuits and bankruptcy proceedings? READ FULL STORY »
This YouTube tribute to Pixar will leave you wanting a hug -- and a Pixar movie-night
In a choir of people who sing the praises of Pixar daily, a man named Leandro Copperfield has succeeded in distinguishing himself by producing a tribute to the animation studio that itself is worthy of laud — and maybe a few tears.
Admittedly the first song of three in the video, a new wave tune from the xx, is a strange fit. But I dare you to find a more appropriate sound to accompany the sight of the balloons flying out of the house from Up. (The intercutting with gazing Woody was also a nice touch).
Looking at Pixar’s greatest works (um, which is pretty much all of their works), it’s easy to see why the studio’s movies boast an impressive Rotten Tomatoes streak. Toy Story 3, in fact, was honored today with a Golden Tomato Award for being the site’s highest-rated movie of 2010. (EW’s Owen Gleiberman was among the stumpers.)
So watch this for yourself, PopWatchers — after work, of course, because it’s seven minutes long. And tell me what you think. READ FULL STORY »
