Gail Simmons blogs 'Top Chef: All-Stars' episode 6

Gail-SimmonsAs told to Archana Ram.

I think last night’s challenge came at the perfect time. The dim sum challenge knocked everyone down a notch, which is normal. The contestants all get a little exhausted at this point in the competition. They needed something to be excited about, and I think sending them fishing for the day did just that. It was a beautiful day in August, it re-energized them and got them really excited about cooking again.

August is the peak of the best season for fresh local ingredients, and the contestants stopped at a farm stand in the Hamptons, which overflowed with beautiful produce. I think when we have that luxury of fresh produce, that’s how chefs should cook. Look at what’s available, what looks the best, and get inspired. That’s the best way to eat. As far as the judging, I wanted to point out that Kerry Heffernan was one of the best guest judges we’ve had before. We’ve had so many people come to the tables — famous chefs, movie stars, TV personalities — I’ve known Kerry for a long time, and he’s a really talented chef. But I never worked with him on television before and didn’t know what kind of experience he had. But he just owned it. We were all so impressed. It was almost like he had been at the judges’ table with us for years. From a behind-the-scenes standpoint, he slipped right into that chair and talked in perfect sound bites. He was like a producer’s dream. We all said, “Wow! Kerry needs to get a television show!” He’s one hell of a good fisherman, too. That’s also why they brought him on. He and Tom fish together every summer. They both spend a lot of time out in Montauk. That was the inspiration because he’s a great fisherman and knows a lot about the sea, not to mention the fact that Tom is an avid, avid fisherman. READ FULL STORY »

Glenn Beck passionately reviews Broadway's 'Spider-Man': 'This is better than Wicked!'

Glenn-Beck-SpidermanImage Credit: Fox; Jacob CohlFox News personality Glenn Beck is never shy about serving up his opinion about most topics — that’s for dang sure — but this morning on his radio show, The Glenn Beck Program, he started in very passionately on a topic that we’ve rarely heard him be passionate about before: the theater. Specifically, Broadway’s new musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, which has been berdevilled with injuries and other problems during its previews. The somewhat surprising part? Beck absolutely loved the show, which has been largely panned by early reviewers. (Technically, no official reviews of Spider-Man are supposed to appear until the show’s official opening, which has been moved back twice but is currently slated for Feb. 7.) “This is better than Wicked!” Beck said, referencing the much-lauded Broadway show that was an instant success when it debuted in 2003. “This is much better than Wicked.”

'Transformers 3,' 'Super 8,' 'Mission: Impossible 4,' and 'Tintin' are going IMAX. Which one will you most likely see on the big big screen?

transformers-3Paramount has officially super-sized four of its biggest 2011 movies. According to the Wall Street Journal, the studio has announced that it will release J.J. Abrams’ mysterious Super 8, Steven Spielberg’s hotly anticipated Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, Michael Bay’s lunar-tastic Transformers: Dark of the Moon, and the curiously punctuated Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol on IMAX screens. Director Brad Bird actually filmed some action scenes for M:I:GP using IMAX cameras, and both Transformers and Tintin will also be shown in 3-D. Now, this all sounds very exciting, but there’s no way your fragile eyes can handle all these ginormous action films. So tell us, PopWatchers: Out of these four Paramount IMAX releases, which one are you most likely to see on the big big big screen?

'God of Carnage' original Broadway cast reunites for six-week L.A. run

Categories: Stage/Theater

god-of-carnageImage Credit: Joan MarcusThe theater world doesn’t usually afford a lot of second chances to audiences: If you miss a particular performer’s run in a role, you’re out of luck. But anyone who didn’t catch the Tony-winning production of Yasmina Reza’s God of Carnage on Broadway in 2009 is about to get another shot. The original cast — Jeff Daniels, James Gandolfini, Hope Davis, and Marcia Gay Harden — and director Matthew Warchus are reuniting for a six-week run at L.A.’s CTG/Ahmanson Theatre from April 5 to May 15. The play, originally written in French but translated and tweaked for American audiences, centers on two New York couples who unravel in comic fashion when they meet to discuss a dispute between their two school-age kids. All four cast members were nominated for Tony Awards in 2009, with Harden winning Best Actress for her part. (And there might be a few Oscars in the play’s future: Roman Polanski is currently prepping a film adaptation, starring Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet, Christoph Waltz, and John C. Reilly.)

What do you think, PopWatchers: Anyone up for a road trip to L.A.?

The 'Arrested Development' shout-out on last night's 'Parenthood'

arrested-development_320.jpg Image Credit: Everett CollectionDid you catch the Arrested Development shout-out on Parenthood last night? Amber and Haddie lied about going to a movie as a cover for Haddie’s clandestine date, so they practiced what they’d say when their respective parents asked them about it: “Michael Cera was obviously hilarious and adorable,” they told each other. Amber even repeated it to her mom, saying “Michael Cera was adorable as always.” Amber, recall, is played by Mae Whitman — who played Ann Veal, girlfriend to Michael Cera’s George Michael. Hee! To the show’s credit, the moment wasn’t played with any wink-winking at all. Also to the show’s credit: Mae Whitman! Holy crap, she is great. READ FULL STORY »

'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo': What do you think of the first images of Rooney Mara as Lisbeth?

W-COVER-ROONEYDavid Fincher’s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo won’t be in theaters until next December, but fans can already check out the first images of Rooney Mara (The Social Network) as Lisbeth Salander on the cover of this month’s W. Decked out in a black leather jacket, bloody knuckles, and a jet-black, asymmetrical hairdo, Mara doesn’t look a thing like her fresh-faced self in The Social Network. According to the article — which is largely a Fincher profile — Mara’s transformation didn’t come easy: “In one ‘very intense’ day, Mara’s eyebrows were bleached, her hair chopped, and her lip, brow, nose, and nipple pierced,” writes journalist Lynn Hirschberg. 'Onion SportsDome' season premiere: Watch a meth addict wrestle with imaginary snakes!

Categories: Sports

It’s easy to be skeptical about spoof-news shows — there is a graveyard full of shows that tried and failed to be the next Daily Show — but I laughed out loud constantly during last night’s season premiere of Onion SportsDome, the SportsCenter-skewering series from the makers of the iconic comedy-news website. The premiere had a good mix of right-on topical humor (LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh rewriting the rules of basketball to make it cooler), media satire (a baseball-team-solves-crimes police procedural), and outright absurdity (Alex Rodriguez writes and stars in a Staying Alive-esque musical!) Still, the part that had me on the floor was the play-by-play footage of a meth addict wrestling with invisible snakes: “Makin’ those snakes play his game!” Check out the video: READ FULL STORY »
