'Spider-Man' first look at Andrew Garfield in his costume: Why so serious?

Sony has released the first image of Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man, and judging from the look of it, the studio’s franchise reboot, due in 2012, will be a much grittier portrait of the superhero as a young man than the blockbuster Sam Raimi/Tobey Maguire films. Some talking points for the webstorm of geek critique and opining this provocative pic is certain to produce:  READ FULL STORY »

Frances McDormand finally does an animated feature. Who else still needs to?

Frances-McDormandImage Credit: Chris Ashford/Camera Press/Retna Ltd; DreamWorks AnimationFrances McDormand, the woman whose Fargo accent you can still hear in your head 15 years later, has finally signed on for her first animated feature, Heat Vision reports. She’s been cast in Madagascar 3 as “a calculating and goal-oriented animal control officer” whose team wants to capture the escaped zoo animals who are still trying to find their way home to New York, this time by joining a traveling circus. Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer and Jada Pinkett Smith will return, and other actors will join in to voice other new characters that are said to include “an Italian sea lion, a Russian tiger and a Latina jaguar.”

More important than whether or not we need another Madagascar sequel — box office receipts say yes, together the first two films have grossed more than $1.1 billion worldwide — this news made me wonder if there are other actors out there who have yet to do a voice in an animated movie who need to, STAT. Nominations?

'Toddlers & Tiaras': 5 cringe-inducing projections from this week's delusional pageant moms

Toddlers-and-TiarasImage Credit: TLC“She loves to be the center of attention at pageants.” –Nicole (pictured), mother of 5-year-old Alexis, whose “unibrow” had been brutally waxed for this week’s featured competition, Fancy Faces of Oklahoma

“She loves to shop. She has great fashion sense.” –Tricia, mother of 15-month-old SamiJo, who was put into pageants because “that’s the whole reason I wanted to have a daughter.”

“I do not know how SamiJo would react today if she didn’t win.” –Tricia, while waiting for the crowning ceremony after having force-fed her baby “special juice” a.k.a. a can of Coke. Um, she’d go take a nap because she’s a baby!!!!!!

“She loves being in pageants. It makes her feel special about herself.” –Kim, stepmom of 4-year-old Jaclynn

“She has a great personality.” –Kim

After the jump, a very special screengrab of Arnold, the disabled puppet considered by 4-year-old Jaclynn to be her number one fan, “dancing” with her father, Weldon, who looked and sounded like a character from a Coen Brothers movie. READ FULL STORY »

Jim Carrey and 'Mr. Popper's Penguins': Is this 'Liar Liar' with birds?

After a long vacation from the spotlight, Jim Carrey’s suddenly everywhere. He hosted a pretty good SNL last weekend, he appeared on Inside the Actor’s Studio on Monday, and now photos from his next movie, Mr. Popper’s Penguins, have hit USA Today. The pics are pretty much what you’d expect: Carrey pulling faces at a cadre of cuddly antarctic birds. More interesting, though, are the plot details that accompany the photos in USA Today‘s slide show. Though Penguins is based on the Newbery Honor-winning book of the same name, it seems like the two share little beyond being about dudes named Mr. Popper who make friends with some penguins. Gwen Stefani strikes a pose for L'Oreal Paris

Gwen Stefani is following in the paths of Jennifer Lopez, Eva Longoria, and Beyoncé Knowles as a cover girl for L’Oréal Paris. People reported that the pop star had signed a deal with the cosmetic giant, and confirmed that she’ll initially be hawking Le Rouge lip color (which we’ll have to take on faith, based on this black-and-white photo). Her first L’Oréal television commercial will debut this weekend, during the Golden Globe Award show.

Did you consider Stefani a lipstick glamour-girl? Does her cred actually enhance the L’Oreal brand?

Why was there a skull in the background on 'Martha Stewart' yesterday? EW investigates!

Why was there a skull perched in the background on The Martha Stewart Show yesterday? Inquiring minds want to know! Evidence of the dark arts? A shoutout to her favorite Joshua Jackson vehicle? Kanye may have underpaid for custom-made watch

I think Kanye West should have blown more than $180,000 on this custom-made yellow gold Tiret watch adorned with his own face. The “Kanye” portion of the watch is encrusted with only eight carats of yellow, black, brown and white diamonds. A few more Ks could surely have lent themselves to something more resemblant of a human ear, or smoothed the bulbous terrain of his jowls and chin. When I commission custom-made watches of my face, I tend to allow a full year instead of Kanye’s “five months to create the dial of the watch itself, which is made of a gold-colored mother-of-pearl.” And why are the diamonds on the border so small? This is a disappointment. [PopEater]

Joy Behar to Snooki and Fred Armisen: 'I'm old, I'm fat, so what?'

On HLN’s The Joy Behar Show, Joy insisted it doesn’t bother her at all when clowns like Jersey Shore‘s Snooki or, better yet, Saturday Night Live‘s Fred Armisen make fun of her. “Not even when you’re alone … quiet … lonely?” cried random panel member Penn Jillette, in a desperate attempt to turn the discussion into a personal therapy session. “Not at all,” said Joy. “I never even thought I was a celebrity!” I think my favorite part is when Penn name-checks freaking Tennyson [update: or maybe Kinison, as in Sam, but I wish it was Tennyson], and Holly Madison is like “What?” READ FULL STORY »

Stephen Colbert takes on Sarah Palin, pundits

Last night, Stephen Colbert addressed the media aftermath of the Arizona massacre — and Sarah Palin’s recent video addressing the same — by picking “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Angriness” as The Word. He even took on Palin’s spokeswoman’s assertion that the campaign map with the crosshairs had nothing to do with guns — that the crosshairs were not sights but rather “surveyors symbols.”

“Sarah Palin knows now is not the time to determine ground elevation,” he said, as “Might Lead to High Road” flashed on sidebar. READ FULL STORY »

This week's cover: Johnny Depp talks exclusively about 'Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides' and the possibility of 'Pirates 5'

EW-COVER-1138When Johnny Depp appeared at a Disney fan convention in the fall of 2009 to hype the announcement of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, it looked like fair weather-sailing for the fourth movie in the blockbuster franchise. But as the cover story of this week’s special 2011 preview issue reveals, the subsequent journey was anything but squall-free. Indeed, for a while, it looked like Depp himself was about to jump ship. “Things became a little creaky,” admits the superstar. The Jerry Bruckheimer-produced operation also had to deal with bad weather of a literal stripe while shooting in Hawaii and the pregnancy of franchise newcomer Penélope Cruz, though Depp says the blooming actress could hardly have been more game. “It was funny to see a pregnant woman f—ing sword-fighting,” he laughs.
