'American Idol' poll: Did you like the new 'Idol'?

american-idol-njImage Credit: Michael Becker/FoxWe knew the faces were going to be different and the show would have a different vibe, but there was no way of knowing whether the changes worked until the lights came on for last night’s American Idol. Could Steven and J.Lo fill the void left by Simon’s departure? Does J.Lo have the mean-girl capacity to crush a contestant’s dreams? Can Steven be succinct or will his ramblings require subtitles? And will the inclusion of 15-year-olds turn Idol into glorified tryouts for Glee? So much to take in, but let’s bottom-line it: Did it work? Vote below.

This week's cover: How 'Glee' is leading TV's gay-teen revolution

ew-cover-1139Gay teens are suddenly popping up in major roles all over television, with Glee’s popular pairing of Kurt (Chris Colfer) and Blaine (Darren Criss) leading the way. How did gay teens go from marginalized outcasts and goofy sidekicks to some of the highest profile — and most beloved — characters on the likes of 90210, Pretty Little Liars, and Skins? And more importantly, how is this affecting real-life teens still facing the daily high-school realities of bullying, discrimination, and ignorance? The new issue of Entertainment Weekly investigates the history of gay teens on TV — from the angsty Rickie on My So-Called Life to sensitive-soul Jack on Dawson’s Creek to the slew of groundbreaking characters on Degrassi. We talk to the producers who fought for such progress, the actors who held the career-defining roles, and the activists who cheer recent advances — but are still pushing for more. Among them: READ FULL STORY »

'Hot in Cleveland' season 2 premiere: 'I'm in freaking jail!'

Hot-in-ClevelandImage Credit: TVLandBetty White launched the season 2 premiere of TV Land’s Hot in Cleveland last night very fittingly—in an orange jumpsuit, singing quite the entertaining rendition of “Nobody Knows the Trouble I’ve Seen” from her jail cell. White just turned 89, and, as evidenced by her singing here, she has more panache than people one quarter of her age. As you might remember, her character Elka was arrested and booked at the end of the season 1 finale for possessing a cellar full of stolen goods that her husband had acquired while working for the mob. Later, we witnessed Betty doing Betty very well, reminding Wendie Malick’s pompous and out-of-touch soap actress character Victoria Chase, “I’m in freaking jail!” Indeed she was. READ FULL STORY »

'Retired at 35': Why is traditional sitcommery so irresistible?

retired-at-35-castImage Credit: TVLandTV Land proved one thing with its premiere of Retired at 35 last night: This cable net has got its brand formula down. Like USA before it, with its quirky-light-heroes-solve-cases gambit, the channel — formerly reserved for endless repeats of classic TV (not that I’m complaining about the All in the Family on my DVR) — has nailed what will clearly now become its go-to approach. The hit Hot in Cleveland served up the template checklist: 1. Ridiculous premise that it’s best to accept without too much thinking. (L.A. ladies of a certain age “crash land” in Cleveland on their way to Paris and decide to stay there? Sure, why not!) 2. Make roommates of an unlikely combo of colorful characters sure to clash. (Ladies “must” live with the “caretaker” of their new house, a sassy lady of an even more advanced certain age.) 3. Have absolute comedy pros star in the show, and watch the viewers — and the skilled readings of even the lamest lines — roll in. (That’s you, Betty White; but also you, Wendie Malick, Jane Leeves, and Valerie Bertinelli.) READ FULL STORY »

Animal Planet's 'Must Love Cats': I must love this series

cat-tv-show-animalImage Credit: Diane Collins and Jordan Hollender/Getty ImagesI can haz defibrillator? Because I just had a heart attack reading Animal Planet’s press release for Must Love Cats, an upcoming six-part series debuting Feb. 12 that “travels coast-to-coast to find America’s feistiest felines and cat fanatics.” According to the press release, “Songwriting and cat-loving host John Fulton embarks on a road trip across America to spend time with, and write songs about, the country’s most talented tabbies, quirkiest kittens, enthusiastic cat owners, and experts.” Okay, two things: 1) Homigod, you best believe I’m channeling my inner cat lady and hoarding this series on my DVR. Also, 2) Yes, you read that right: Fulton writes songs… about cats. (Everything reminds us of Friends!) In fact, those songs are called “kitty-ditties.” I fully expect to see this man on an upcoming episode of Intervention. Or in my living room, where we will craft a tiny guitar for my tiny cat. I can’t decide which.

But wait! There’s more! READ FULL STORY »

Excess Hollywood: 'The A-List' gets a second season

  • Logo has announced that it has renewed The A-List: New York for a second season. The original cast — Reichen Lehmkuhl, Rodiney Santiago, Mike Ruiz, Austin Armacost, Derek Lloyd Saathoff, Ryan Nickulas, and TJ Kelly — are all on tap to return. The network says fans can expect to see some new faces during the season as well. If only we can get some new voices.
  • The O.C. creator Josh Schwartz’s feature film directing debut will be Fun Size, a comedy about a girl who loses her little brother when taking him trick-or-treating. Did she check Peter Gallagher‘s eyebrows? [THR]
  • Release dates for Disney’s Frankenweenie and John Carter of Mars have shifted. Now, Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie will hit theaters on Oct. 5, 2012 (instead of March 9, 2012) while Carter of Mars will be released March 9, 2012 (instead of June 8, 2012). [The Wrap]
  • Former Heroes actor Santiago Cabrera is the latest to join J.J. Abrams’ Alcatraz, playing Sarah Jones’ character’s cop boyfriend, who will hopefully arrest Mohinder Suresh for years of dialogue abuse. [Deadline]
  • Sony has acquired rights to The Accidental Billionaires author Ben Mezrich’s Sex on the Moon: The Amazing Story Behind the Most Audacious Heist in History. Kevin Spacey — an exec producer on The Social Network, an adaptation of Mezrich’s Facebook-centric Billionaires — is set to exec produce the project. Mezrich’s book follows a scientist who developed to steal moon rocks from NASA for his girlfriend. Wow, Mary Bailey has gotten really demanding. [Variety]
  • I drink your sacrament! Samuel Goldwyn Films has nabbed There Will Be Dragons, a Wes Bentley-starring film about a journalist who delves into a mystery involving Opus Dei. [Deadline]

Jillian Michaels to make Super Bowl fans sweat with GoDaddy ads

Super_Bowl_Danica_and_JillianImage Credit: GoDaddy.comYes, we all know that watching Jillian on The Biggest Loser is a bit like watching a porno: There’s a lot of screaming, a healthy dose of domination, and an accompanying shameful desire to keep watching, even if you’re a little scared about what you’re going to see. Even still, I never expected the super-empowered super-trainer to back GoDaddy.com, a company most well-known for its super-smutty ads starring super-sexy race car driver Danica Patrick. But according to CNN, Michaels will indeed star in two spots set to air Feb. 6 during the Super Bowl. “It doesn’t get much bigger than being in a Super Bowl commercial,” she’s quoted as saying. “I think shooting a spot with Danica Patrick is going to be a blast.”  READ FULL STORY »

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords healing with 'Harry Potter'

Gabrielle-GiffordsImage Credit: Office of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords/AP ImagesLike everyone, I follow reports on the recovery of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords amazed at what she’s already able to do and mindful of the long road ahead of her. Her mother, Gloria, sent an email to family and friends on Tuesday updating her status as the congresswoman, still in serious condition after a bullet traveled the length of the left side of her brain on Jan. 8, prepares to be moved to a rehab facility (hopefully on Friday). News sources obtained the note, and now we know that she was able to untie her husband Mark Kelly’s tie and unbutton the top button of his shirt when he returned to her side after speaking at her aide’s memorial service, and that she’s scrolled through the photos on his iPod and begun to read cards made for her by concerned 4th graders. We also know that her husband has gotten large-print pages of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, the first book in the J.K. Rowling series, ”for her to hold and read.” In a CNN story filled with reasons to tear up, for me, that was one of them.  READ FULL STORY »
