Natalie Portman's laugh is the new Brendan Fraser clap

Even College Humor must think so, since they ended this montage of Natalie Portman’s hypnotic/annoying/adorable laugh during her Golden Globes acceptance speech with our favorite GIF from last year’s Globes.

Anyone else think Fraser should be the Jack Nicholson of the Globes? READ FULL STORY »

MTV's new teen hit 'Skins': Could it be flirting with child pornography?

Filed under: News, Television, TV and tagged: , ,

skinsImage Credit: Jason Nocito/MTVMTV execs are scrutinizing upcoming episodes of their racy new teen-drama hit Skins to ensure they don’t violate child pornography laws, The New York Times reports today. And indeed, the unflinchingly realistic portrait of middle-class high school partiers — filled with unapologetic sex, booze, and drugs (the title itself refers to rolling papers for joints) — surely was made to court controversy. A stateside version of the edgy British sensation of the same name, it’s pretty much designed to finally make a splash in the scripted-series arena for MTV, no stranger to controversy. The Hard Times of R.J. Berger, another high-school-set show, tried and failed at the same trick — in my opinion, because it was trying too hard to be crude (its premise revolves around its title character’s ample endowment) while neglecting to add any real heart. Skins is more “dangerous” because, like its predecessor, it has soul, with well-rounded characters whose problems are, while a little melodramatic, relatable at their core (especially if you give them a chance beyond the overwrought pilot episode). Fans could actually get invested in this thing and pay attention to all the rampant naughtiness — indeed, an impressive 3.3 million tuned in for its premiere this week.

It’s also dangerous — legally — because the show cast kids as kids. READ FULL STORY »

NASA video contest: We endorse 'Captain Banana vs. The Evil Ghost Chili'

If you follow NASA on Twitter, you may be aware that online voting is now open for its Optimus Prime Spinoff Award Video Contest, which encouraged kids, grades 3 to 8, to create shorts about NASA technology that has been modified to go into products used on Earth. NASA considers Transformers’ Optimus Prime, who came to Earth from space, a great analogy for NASA technology transfer, which has resulted in “spinoffs” like, you know, “the heart defibrillator your grandparents might have [!], or the memory foam mattress you sleep on at night, or even the purified water you drink at your house.” Reading about the “spinoff” technology is genuinely fascinating, but watching kids ramble on about it, not so much. That is why we, if I can be so bold as to speak for my discriminating colleagues at Entertainment Weekly, would like to endorse “Captain Banana vs. The Evil Ghost Chili” in the 3rd-5th grade bracket. Watch it below.  READ FULL STORY »

Clip du jour: Cats in a rock band

I’m sooo over boring old bands. I demand an ensemble made completely of cats! Thanks, Japan!

The idea of a kitten smoking a cigarette will haunt me for the rest of my days, but I will never ever tire of animals wearing sunglasses. READ FULL STORY »

Kate-Shindle-WonderlandImage Credit: Michal DanielNo, that’s not the Red Queen in Wonderland, the new musical version of Lewis Carroll’s classic Alice in Wonderland opening at Broadway’s Marquis Theatre on April 17. That’s actually the Mad Hatter, played by former Miss America Kate Shindle (who’s starred on stage in in Legally Blonde and Cabaret). “One of my first questions to the creative team was, ‘Why is the Mad Hatter female?’” admits Shindle about her gender-bending new role. The Kardashians come out with their own line of Silly Bandz: What will they think of next?

Not a family to shy away from expanding their empire, the Kardashian sisters have joined the ranks of celebrities like Justin Bieber and John Mayer and have announced their own line of Kardashian-branded Silly Bandz. The ubiquitous brightly colored rubber bracelets will come in Kardashian-themed shapes: a letter K, a purse, a high heel, the logo of their store (Dash), a diamond ring, a perfume bottle, silhouettes of the three girls, and some really deformed looking lips. I can only wonder how many episodes into the season of Kourtney & Kim Take New York it’ll take until we see the sisters donning their own Silly Bandz. (It will be like their very own Wriststrong!)

I can’t say I’m surprised that the Kardashians have come out with a set of Silly Bandz, but it really makes me wonder what the sisters could possibly come up with next. READ FULL STORY »

'Cougar Town': Lady-friends unite!

Filed under: TV and tagged: ,

cougar-townImage Credit: Adam Taylor/ABCWarning: This week’s episode of Cougar Town included a reference to “stomping on someone’s grapes,” an unfortunately censored “naked dance,” and another appearance by global rectangular sensation Big Carl — who finally made it out of the kitchen and the wine bar. In the wake of Grayson’s belated yet appreciated “I love you” confession a couple weeks ago, Grules were feeling pretty satisfied with their lovebird status. So the primary conflict this week centered around Ellie, Jules and Laurie’s lady-friend issues. READ FULL STORY »

Joan Rivers, 'Fox and Friends', and the great attention contest

Who loves publicity more: Joan Rivers or Fox News? It’s neck and Botoxed neck, you guys. Yesterday, Fox & Friends canceled Rivers’ appearance, which they say was a scheduling error. Rivers took to Twitter, where she said it wasn’t an innocent mistake. “I made a joke about Sarah Palin that was picked up by @TMZ… As a result, our appearance on the Fox News Channel tomorrow morning has been canceled.” She told a similar story to Joy Behar: READ FULL STORY »

'Captain America,' 'Transformers 3,' 'Super 8,' and other big movies will have Super Bowl ads: Which are you most excited for?

superbowl-commercialsImage Credit: Paramount; Jay Maidment/Marvel StudiosQuestion: What’s more American than the Super Bowl? Answer: A handsome buff dude wearing an American flag and fighting Nazis, of course! Which means this year’s Super Bowl telecast on Feb. 6 will feature the most patriotic commercial in TV history. (Sorry, Daisy.) According to the Hollywood Reporter, Captain America: The First Avenger will debut its first official trailer during the Super Bowl. But that’s not the only big movie that will be prominently featured on the most-watched program of the year. Fellow Marvel superhero Thor will also appear, along with a threequel (Transformers: Dark of the Moon), a fourquel (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides), a pair of gonzo westerns (Cowboys & Aliens and Rango), and J.J. Abrams’ latest mystery project Super 8. And also Limitless, the Robert De Niro/Bradley Cooper magical-drug project. (One of these things: Not like the others!)

Movie trailers are one of my favorite parts of the Super Bowl, second only to beer commercials. (The football can be fun, too.) Personally, I’m most excited to finally get an extended peek at the Captain America movie. But which of these trailers are you most excited about, PopWatchers? Take the Super Bowl Movie Preview poll after the jump… READ FULL STORY »

Amy Poehler was adorable and silly on The Tonight Show last night, giggling and joking her way through promoting Parks and Recreation, throwing down some Boston-accented cursing, and educating us all about the magical powers of onions. READ FULL STORY »
