Amy Poehler's adorable/creepy stock photos unearthed

volunteerImage Credit: Comstock Images/Getty ImagesThey’re not quite as embarrassing as Tina Fey’s cheesy 1995 Mutual Savings Bank commercial, but these newly unearthed stock photos of fellow comedy goddess Amy Poehler are similarly adorable and cringe-worthy. Even pre-SNL and Parks and Rec, you can see traces of her oddball, borderline creepy energy bubbling under that innocent smile. I can’t help but imagine her shrieking, “RICK! RICK!” right after posing.

So who makes a better candy striper: Amy Poehler or this other Amy in an early gig?

Who's going to be this year's surprise Oscar nominee?

Filed under: Movies and tagged: ,

the-town-postelthwaiteWhen the Oscar nominations are announced on Tuesday morning, who will be this year’s Maggie Gyllenhaal? Last year, the Crazy Heart actress wasn’t nominated for a Golden Globe. She wasn’t nominated for a Screen Actors Guild acting award either. But on the morning of Feb. 2, 2010, she learned that the Academy had recognized her performance with one of its five Best Supporting Actress slots. There’s typically a lot of overlap between the three award-giving entities, but Gyllenhaal’s nomination wasn’t unprecedented. Michael Shannon was ignored by the Globes and the SAGs for his work in Revolutionary Road in 2009 only to be richly rewarded by Oscar. Two years ago, Tommy Lee Jones (In the Valley of Elah) and Laura Linney (The Savages) pulled off the surprise Oscar nod.

So if recent history holds, there’s more than a good chance that an actor or actress we weren’t necessarily expecting will crash the Oscar party. READ FULL STORY »

'No Strings Attached,' 'The Green Hornet,' 'The Dilemma'? Which will you see this weekend? (Box Office Poll)

Filed under: Movies and tagged: ,

If you knew that Natalie Portman was starring in a new movie, you’d probably at least kind of want to see that movie, right? Well, you’re in luck: This week, Portman stars in her first romantic comedy, No Strings Attached, in which she tries really, really hard not to fall in love with Ashton Kutcher. (Our advice for Natalie: Just watch any other Ashton Kutcher romantic comedy!) EW’s John Young thinks No Strings Attached, the only major new release, will easily run away with the weekend, with repeat performers The Green Hornet, The Dilemma, True Grit, and The King’s Speech filling out the top five.

But what do we know? PopWatchers, what will you be watching this weekend at the multiplex? Has the ace supporting cast (Mindy Kaling! Kevin Kline!) attracted you to No Strings Attached? Will you finally catch up on Academy Awards contenders like The Green Hornet and The Dilemma, or will you settle for shallow popcorn entertainment like True Grit and The King’s Speech? Invert that last sentence, and then tell us what you’ll be seeing in the poll after the jump. (If you feel like it, tell us why in the comments!) READ FULL STORY »

Stephen Colbert calls out Rush Limbaugh for 'kung-pao jibberjabber'

Rush Limbaugh upset many listeners on Wednesday when he crudely imitated the Mandarin-speaking Chinese president Hu Jintao. Stephen Colbert took special issue with Limbaugh’s “kung-pao jibberjabber” on last night’s Colbert Report, but for very selfish reasons: “I don’t know about you folks, but I am deeply offended by Rush’s cheap, insensitive … rip-off of my character, Ching-Chong Ding-Dong,” j’accused Colbert, whose Ching-Chong speaks simple pidgin English. “C’mon, Rush. Don’t take my only character. You have a huge repertoire of [insensitive] impressions.”

While some media outlets piled on Limbaugh, Colbert actually took the time to translate the conservative radio host’s seemingly meaningless rant back in to English. Click on the link below to get the entire translation: READ FULL STORY »

Clip du jour: Now, if you'll excuse me...

Tagged:

Yay, another supercut of overused movie lines! This time, “Now, if you’ll excuse me.” I wonder if anyone has actually said “now if you’ll excuse me” in normal, not affected conversation. I seriously doubt it, but if it’s good enough for Garth Algar, I guess it’s good enough for all of us: READ FULL STORY »

'Black Panther' movie in development: Could Marvel's first black superhero finally make it to the big screen?

Tagged: ,

black-pantherImage Credit: MarvelThe Black Panther doesn’t have the same name recognition as fellow Marvel superheroes Spider-Man and Wolverine, but he’s one of the most interesting characters in comic book history. Debuting in the mid-’60s, the Panther is generally credited as the first African-American superhero in mainstream comic books. (He actually predated the founding of far-left-wing ’60s group of the same name.) There’s been talk of a Black Panther movie for decades now, without any success, but it looks like Marvel is willing to try again: According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel Studios has hired documentarian Mark Bailey to draft a Black Panther screenplay.

The Panther’s superpowers aren’t very interesting. He’s super-strong and super-agile, he occasionally sprouts claws, and his senses are all enhanced, which makes him a grab-bag mix of Daredevil, Wolverine, and BraveStarr. But the mythology around the character is fascinating. READ FULL STORY »

Gay teens: Do they belong on the tween networks?

Filed under: Television, TV and tagged: ,

iCarlyImage Credit: Lisa Rose/NickelodeonGay characters are all over teen TV these days, as EW’s cover story reports this week. Our cover boys Darren Criss and Chris Colfer — as Glee‘s Blaine and Kurt — are leading the way, of course, but there’s also a staggering number of gay teens across the dial these days. And better yet, the characters designated as gay are getting more diverse and well-rounded. There’s 90210‘s hunky playboy Teddy, Pretty Little Liars‘ gorgeous and popular Emily, Skins’ punky lesbian cheerleader (yes!) Tea, and Shameless‘ tough-kid Ian — to name just a few. In fact, youth-oriented networks lead the way with LGBT representation; ABC Family and MTV rank at the top of GLAAD’s annual Network Responsibility index, and TeenNick’s Degrassi has included a staggering eight non-straight characters (including this season’s female-t0-male transgender teen, Adam). And yet, there’s one place full of teen characters — but zero gay ones. That’s the tween networks, Disney Channel and Nickelodeon.

Such channels, which aim most of their programming at pre-adolescents, make for a tricky environment when it comes to introducing gay characters. READ FULL STORY »

'Medium' series finale: Farewell to one of TV's best families

medium-cbsImage Credit: Danny Feld/NBCMedium never got the love and attention it deserved, and after seven psychic seasons on two different networks, the series comes to a close tonight. The gory crime-solving and supernatural elements of the show were fun, but the best part of the show was always its realistic portrayal of a stable, happy family, squabbles and all.

Joe and Allison DuBois are a close second to Eric and Tami Taylor for my favorite married couple on TV — playful, loving, expressive, and they’re terrific parents, too. Before Modern Family was getting all the (totally deserved!) credit for its realistic, not-at-all annoying kid actors, Medium‘s trio of blond munchkins were tearing it up. (Especially Maria Lark.) The DuBois women might be able to communicate with the dead, but they also argue over spelling tests, or who might need glasses, or who finished the cereal or passed her driving test.

Seven seasons is a good run, and Medium made the most of it, so let’s it bury and praise it all at once: What was your favorite Medium moment, PopWatchers?

Which TV character's bedroom are you dying to see?

Ian-SomerhalderImage Credit: Quantrell Colbert/The CWOh, don’t look at me like that. I’m asking this question not because I want you to imagine where the fictional magic happens, but because there comes a time when you’re such a fan of a show that you start wanting to piece together more of a character’s personality — and no place is as fun to do that in as his or her bedroom (with an adjoining bathroom, preferably). Sometimes you like what you see: the lightsabers mounted above Howard’s bed on The Big Bang Theory. Sometimes you don’t: I’ve almost come to terms with the fact that Bones‘ Seeley Booth wears a beer helmet in the tub. Either way, it can be a revealing look into the character as well as a refreshing change of scenery. So, which TV character’s bedroom would you love to finally see? READ FULL STORY »
