Geoff Stults lands lead in potential 'Bones' spin-off: Why we're psyched

Geoff-StultsImage Credit: Pixplanete/PR PhotosGeoff Stults, last seen on ABC’s Happy Town, will play “Locator” Walter Sherman in the April episode of Bones serving as a backdoor pilot for a potential spin-off series, EW has confirmed. The Hollywood Reporter first reported news of the long-awaited casting, which exec producer Stephen Nathan described as a tricky process to EW earlier this month. “You want to find people you want to see every single week do one unique character. That’s why when you have Hugh Laurie, who is essentially playing a very unlikable character, you love to see him. And that is a rare, rare quality to find,” he said. “The finder won’t be an unlikeable character, but because it is a unique character, it’s difficult to find just the right person.” Casting came down to the wire: The episode — which finds Booth (David Boreanaz) and Brennan (Emily Deschanel) traveling for a case to Key West, Fla., where the spin-off would be set — will shoot next month.

Walter Sherman is the central figure in “The Locator” novels by Richard Greener. Adapted for the Bones world, Sherman will be a former military policeman who served in Iraq with Booth. He has the ability to find people or things others can’t. The character has been described as “skeptical of every statement” and prone to asking “offensive, seemingly irrelevant questions, which, oddly enough, turn out to be extremely relevant.” Word is, he’ll butt heads with Booth, but Brennan will be fascinated by him.

What do you think? For me, this is perfect casting. Not only does Stults (who played semi-professional football in Europe before turning to acting) have the kind of build that will allow him to go toe-to-toe with Boreanaz — fun — he’s more importantly gonna be able to stand next to Michael Clarke Duncan, who’s been tapped to play Sherman’s partner, Leo. I assume the vibe of the spin-off would be similar to Bones, and from what I know of Stults, he’s got the guy’s guy charm of Seeley Booth and a sense of humor. Back in 2007, when I wrote that seeing him shirtless was one of the reasons to give October Road’s second (and final) season a chance, he left me a voicemail offering to come by my office so I could “do some ab watching.” Alas, that never happened, but when we chatted in April before Happy Town‘s premiere, he remembered the voicemail and said, “I owe you some nakedness.” He also told a great story about Gary Busey chasing him around a table in Puerto Vallarta with a kitchen knife after Geoff’s brother George (a fellow 7th Heaven alum) told Busey that Geoff said he could take him, and described, at length, his man crush on David Beckham. Add in his ability to play the soft, romantic side of a man’s man as seen on October Road, and what I’m saying is, he has a personality that I suspect fans of Seeley Booth will appreciate.

In conclusion, I would just add that he looks good with stubble, and his laid back Twitter pic is exactly what I imagine this character to look like. Thoughts?

He is too young to play Walter. And not leading man material.

    • Jennifer Truth

And he’s the poor man’s Dexter.

      • Betty Draper

I have no idea who Walter is and I don’t care…he looks great! I have absolute faith in the Bones team. Can’t wait!

    • Noelbelle

I went in a Kay Jewelers in my town a few weeks ago and there were really old marketing posters with him in it plastered all over the place.

    • cbt

well i loved the finder episode and all i could think was i would love this to become a show!!! loved it cant wait for it to begin!!

  • Tina

Miscast. Sorry but he doesn’t have what it takes to play this role. Bad move Hart.

  • Helen

Hart would be better to get Bones into shape than doing this sort of spin off. Except David directing epi, whicg was amazing, this season has been shakey to say the least.

    • JennaE

Helen, I completely agree with you! I have never missed a Bones episode until this season, I actually stopped watching sometime at the end of 2010. The show just seems boring now.

    • GET A ROOM!

      shaky, to spell the best

To me this is a swing and a miss. Your basically saying that he is a good choice because he’s good to look at and he’s a nice guy. But is he a good actor?

What makes House so eminently watchable week in and out is that Hugh Laurie has tremendous acting chops and can portray pathos, anger, humor, etc.

    • Roooster

      Amen!
I am all for enthusiasm in epecting some fine casting choice, but come on – praising an actor for ‘having a sense of humor and a good physique’ as if those were some acting laurels is just silly. I guess we’ll see soon enough what he can swing, but I do not expect him to be able to go toe to toe with Seely (Boreanaz) nor to intrigue and wow Bones (Deschanel). And C.M Duncan will probably simply dwarf him into insignificance (i.e. physically – as far as acting talent, I think it is ridiculous to cast Duncan then expect viewers to take it seriously), until he just squashes him accidentally one day.
This guy looks nice enough, in a cleaned-up-scrappy way, but the show’s base is awesome acting of all principal characters, every single one of them, and he will have a tough road ahead of him to jump in and immediately have to find himself operating at that level.
And a final thought – some ‘pretty guys’ do not translate into likeable or sympathetic characters. I worry that he will try to anchor his performance in his looks, which will turn off many faithful viewers very quickly. Spinoffs like that are never really a good idea – look at ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and it’s ‘baby’ ‘Private Practice’. Writers and producers shift their focus onto the new kid, while the writing, stories and characters suffer on the established hit, taking it down week by week in viewers estimation. I pretty much stopped watching ‘Grey’s’, and then ‘Private Practice’ got so unoriginal that I stopped that too. I’d really hate for this to happen to ‘Bones’ because this is my favorite serial on TV.
Here’s hoping it will all work out, and if not, then that the whole idea of a spinoff would go away in a hurry.

Should of casted another day. He is not a good actor. Leading man. Please. Srly. Walter is going to be a know it all jerk with mental problems. You need a better actor to do that to make me care and tune in.

  • bigbri

I am interested to see how he will do. I am sure others said the same thing about Boreanaz when he got the job as Booth. This premise sounds interesting as well. I imagine we will see a crossover episode(s) to help with ratings to get both shows going again.

  • jmcg

I am not familiar with the books so I don’t know what this character is really like. Just from what I’ve read, I had the impression that the character is kind of edgy and serious–this guy looks goofy. He doesn’t fit who I imagined that character to be.

  • jfms777

    Wrong choice.

  • adam

Before you say he’s a bad choice/miscast, why don’t you watch the episode first and then cast your judgement

    • Sue1

What lovely advice, adam. I’m going to follow it, and wait to watch before I decide.

    • mangagirl

Totally agree, I’m looking forward to the April episode so I can make my own judgement.

  • Summer Bay

Sorry, but anyone who worked on 7th Heaven shouldn’t be allowed to work again.

    • Allison

      LOL!

    • st

I disagree. Stultz was great on 7th Heaven & October Road. I think he has the chops to pull this off.

  • Brenda

He was great on October Road…I am willing to give him and the show a chance…besides it is only a potential spin-off…hasn’t even been made or picked up…yet! Give the guy a chance!!

  • Jennifer Truth

    The poor man’s Dexter.

  • J

Hmm…I think I’ll pass. Respect, but I’ve seen this guy in other things and he doesn’t have much presence, at least not enough to anchor a show. JMO

  • Elizabeth

    “backdoor pilot”. Hilarious.

  • pylgrym

    Not doing it for me.
