Our pick to replace Regis on 'Live! with Regis and Kelly': Jeff Probst!

probst-regisImage Credit: Monty Brinton/CBS ; ABCJudging by your comments on our news item that Regis plans to depart the eponymous show, you’ve got a lot of ideas about who should replace him. There’s no shortage of candidates, and many of them have appeared on Live in the past few years since Regis has been working a Monday-Thursday schedule. What many of these wannabes have proved is that Regis actually has a pretty challenging gig. In fact, the job description to replace him would read something like this:

National daily talk show looking for spontaneous, quick-witted, and funny man who can banter about everything from baseball to push-up bras. Must have excellent interview skills, but promise not to go all 60 Minutes on a celebrity who is experiencing divorce, drug addiction, or other difficulties. Think more James Lipton than Charlie Rose. The ideal candidate should be handsome, telegenic and genially cranky. (It’s okay to hate the snow or lines at Starbucks, but not Obama or Sarah Palin.) Must be able to spin a prize wheel without stealing any moves from Pat Sajack. Perks include: five-hour work week, some travel, and sitting next to an attractive, vivacious blonde every morning.

Pretty much every name in America except mine has been bandied about for a replacement. And, of them, our vote goes to Jeff Probst.

He’s lively. He’s intelligent. And he’s had to interview some true nimrods during Survivor‘s many tribal councils. (We’re talking to you, Coach!) He’s good with animals of the jungle and human variety. He has the ability to draw out the most reticent players and make them look interesting. He always appears to be engaged in his job and conscious of making good TV. Plus, click here to see his chemistry with Kelly.

Word is that his contract with Survivor is up in May. Perfect timing. Are you willing to get behind EW’s campaign? If not, who is your choice? And has Regis’ retirement announcement made you care about his show more than you have in years?

Only if Probst gets to take a couple months off every year to film Survivor!

    • Jay

WOW, do people under the age of 84 watch Survivor??

      • angelcop74

        Yes, they do! :D
But people under 80 do NOT watch Regis & Kelly, SO no to Jeff going to the morning show… Let Anderson Cooper do it. It’ll also help increase their G&L viewers :)

      • Lindsey

hahaha, I feel the same. Haven’t watched Survivor in years.

      • Michael

Yeah. It has one of the most loyal fan bases ever. It is probably the most rabidly watched TV show in my residence hall. Unless you’re on a ladies’ floor. Then it’s Grey’s.

      • Charlene

Duh- how old is Regis? It seems to me Survivor could tape when Live was on sabbatical, or a guest host could sit in for Probst. It would be great to see Kelly on Survivor. I dont think 84-year-olds watch Survivor, since there arent enough to keep it on the air. Gay Richard Hatch fans keep Survivor going.

I think Boston Rob can take over hosting Survivor so Jeff can do Kelly.

      • Shanlan

I’m with you! That’s a great idea!! That’s the best of both worlds for me!

    • Gelman

      • Jeff

I agree! NO TO PROBST. He’s a terrible host and so self-absorbed.

      • JenR

Wait, you think Regis is NOT self-absorbed?! Hee hee. If that is what you think of Probst, he is perfect for the job!

    • m

      can’t imagine survivor without jeff

    • KWise

I can only support Probst’s nomination to “Live” if he’d still do Survivor. There is no Survivor without Probst – and I’ll wring someone’s neck if “Live” steals him away

    • Leslie

      Obviously the best choice
      But must not leave Survivor

    • Juneau

Can’t live without Jeff doing Survivor. So NO to replacing Regis.

    • sfday

Totally agree – he was great with Kelly but I love my Probsty Survivor!!

    • bruno

no, jeff cannot leave the island. plus, he’s kind of a perv, haven’t you noticed? doesn’t belong on the morning horn.
i’d put my money on the hubby. first chance for a husband/wife morning show? abc must be eating that up.

  • Al

I’d rather see Regis do “Survivor”.

  • Sara

I agree he’d be great but I don’t want him to leave Survivor!

    • TorontoTom

I’d hate to lose Survivor (without Probst, it’d be over in a season, maybe two) just so that he could take over this job. Career-wise, a nice move for him but my selfish reasons want him to stay with Survivor.

      • lisasp

agree completely. maybe he could do both!?

  • Jeremy

I still think Damien Fahey would be a good replacement.

  • vakamalua

    Probst is BORING and SMUG…

    • AliSD

      Agreed. Reality host robotron.

    • jared4ever

totally agree. He’s like a Ken doll talking head. Everytime he says “Immunity is back up for grabs” I think this guy has no independent thought contributes absolutely nothing to this show.

      • @jared4ever

you’re wrong. probst is one of the most engaging, energetic and involved hosts on reality television. i don’t know what show you watch.

      • Lee

Probst would be a good foil for Kelly Ripa, and a guest host could sit in when Survivor tapes. Maybe there could be a Survivor show to see who subs for him on those occasions. I like boring, smug, and self-absorbed. Would you prefer Mother Teresa?

    • chillydogs

EW, are you serious? Put down the crack pipe.

Probst is boring, smug, self-absorbed and not funny. Only geriatrics watch him.

Has to be Mike Rowe or Martin Short or Billy Crystal. Someone who is FUNNY!

    • jared4ever

Too good for the “Regis & Kelly Show”

    • Couchtime With Jill

He has his own daytime TV show coming out this year, but I agree – in a dream world, Anderson Cooper would take the gig. He’s so charming and funny when he guest hosts.

  • Marc

Your choice of Jeff Probst dovetails nicely with my own selection of ‘Not Mario Lopez’, so sure I’ll support your campaign, EW. As long as Probst gets time off to do Survivor.

    • Melissa

      This CRACKED me up.

    • hen

      lol! that was awesome

  • Kim

Chris Cuomo all the way!! Smart, handsome, family man, and funny. What more can I say. Chris Cuomo is the man!

    • TorontoTom

Totally agree – Cuomo would be GREAT as Kelly’s co-host. I stopped watching GMA after he left.

  • Amber

    Craig Ferguson

    • Allan

He’s great but I doubt he’d function well sharing the hosting duties.

      • lizzie

sure he would! but my pick would be the Chris Harrison from the Bachelor… unassuming, good sense of humor. because lets be honest, whoever they pick needs to be the back up for Kelly. it is her show now.

  • Ripley

Yes, Probster is the perfect choice! I love Survivor, but a Rob/ Russell showdown would be the perfect ending to the series.

  • Mac

I like Probst but there is no way he could do Live (an ABC show)without leaving Survivor (a CBS show).

  • Stephanie T.

    What about Marc Summers?

  • Eli

    Ewan McF***inggregor!

    • Lindsey

      I would so watch.

  • Jake

What about Tom Papa from the marriage ref. Or I heard Greg Proops, he’d be solid too.

    • Strepsi

I find Metamucil helps with solid Proops…

      • Tiffany

  • Marc

Jay Mohr has had the best chemistry with Kelly subbing for Regis over the years. But honestly you could put a blow up doll in his chair and it would have a better understanding of the entertainment industry than Regis ever did.
