Question of the Day: What did Chris Nolan ever do to piss off the Academy so much? First Dark Knight, and now Inception. The Academy would rather overlook his epic visionary style, and they wonder why they alienate most movie audiences? Nolan is essentially combining real, personal stories with grand-scale storytelling. I would think that they would want to recognize an individual like that. I just don’t understand…

Oh, and the scary mom in Black Swan!

  • Emily

The Town getting snubbed from best picture was the biggest surprise for me.

Then Christopher Nolan not getting nominated for best director

Then Ryan Gosling’s heartbreaking turn in Blue Valentine. He deserved a nomination.

  • Johnny

Daft Punk for the TRON Legacy soundtrack.

    • Jake

You know what? I can agree with that

Ryan Gosling! He was someone I hated one minute and loved another during that movie. Bummer.

  • Jerome

Diane Warren’s “Haven’t Seen the Last of Me” (Cher), Janet Jackson’s “Nothing,” Carrie Underwood’s Narnia Song, Taylor Swift’s “Fairy Tale” (Valentines Day), Christina’s Burlesque. I don’t think the Gwyneth song from COuntry Strong is the one that got the nom!? Another FINE reason to NOT have the songs performed this year. That committee is OUT OF IT! These woulda been GREAT performances and are worthy of nods.

I’m shocked as well Andrew Garfield was left off. And neither of the supporting Black Swan girls?

Seems like The King’s Speech and True Grit were the big winners by way of what their main competitors DIDN’T get. Inception is out of the running when the Academy snubs the man behind it all and leaves Nolan out of Best Director (hope he wins the DGA now!). The Social Network missed a lock nomination in Garfield being left off. Black Swan the same with Kunis out. The Fighter’s lead Wahlberg doesn’t get recognized. With less than expected for Inception, Social Network, Black Swan, The FIghter & Inception, the Academy has sent a message that they are on the band wagon for The King’s Speech and True Grit. They scored the most total noms and are now poised to be the ones to beat. Not necessarily deserving of that distinction but they are in the drivers seat now.

Trust me – ‘The King’s Speech’ is TOTALLY deserving!

  • Bridget

The Town for Best Picture…and Ben Affleck for Best Director…seriously.

    • Jackie

Agreed. One of the best movies I saw last year.

  • CTC

Eisenberg over Gosling? Someone tell me that was just a funny joke.

    • Tye-Grr

Eisenberg is not the weak link there. He should win.

      • CTC

You’re delusional. Eisenberg is not a dynamic actor and his performance was good at best. If anything, he was type-casted like the usual awkward, nerd character he is. Gosling is one of the best actors in Hollywood. Clearly you didn’t see Blue Valentine.

      • Ackerman

I agree, Eisenberg was great, but Gosling was better. I love Jeff Bridges, but would have prefered Ryan Gosling getting the nomination (I also thought Gosling’s Half-Nelson performance should have won, but how can I begrudge Forrest Whittaker an Oscar?)

  • Blynn

Leonardo DiCaprio for Inception??? where’s his nomination??!! big SNUB!

  • Todd

Garfield and Nolan not being nominated were the biggest surprises. Bardem’s late campaign support got him in there, too. Other than that, pretty much what we expected. 10 nominations for True Grit! Great. Won’t win more than 2 of them, but GREAT for True Grit.

  • Tye-Grr

Nolan, Garfield, and Lee Smith for ‘Inception’s’ editing… Biggest snubs, BY FAR! I’m also disappointed about Kunis, but to a lesser degree…

  • Jessica

Scott Pilgrim Vs The World for Visual Effects. That movie was pure eye candy for effects!

    • Jake

I can agree with that, even though the movie was just okay. Same with Tron

    • Jose

      Yes

  • Claire K.

Diane Warren was snubbed for “You Haven’t Seen the Last of Me” (Best Original Song). Once again, the song that wins the Golden Globe doesn’t even get nominated. Minor snub, but still valid!
