'Perfect Couples' season premiere: Does anyone have strong feelings about this show?

I’ve been struggling to come up with something to say about Perfect Couples. The newest addition to NBC’s super-sized Thursday Night comedy block is a sitcom that’s neither hilarious nor horrendous. Every show surrounding it is capable of inspiring passionate adoration or equally passionate hatred in viewers. By contrast, Perfect Couples is just kind of… there.

The series stars three very different pairs: perky, preppy, insufferable Rex and Leigh (Hayes MacArthur and Olivia Munn, who’s totally inoffensive); immature, constantly quarreling-then-making-out Vance and Amy (David Walton and Mary Elizabeth Ellis); and the token straight man and woman, normal, likable Dave and Julia (Kyle Bornheimer and Christine Woods). The six are connected by relationships straight out of the Friends playbook: Rex and Julia are brother and sister, while Vance and Dave are old buddies from college.

There are certainly individual things to like and dislike about Perfect Couples‘s pilot. Its opening sequence, in which each pair deals with the same problem using completely divergent methods, is kind of clever, and there are some funny lines peppered throughout. (In the middle of a fight, Amy calls Vance a “giant baby monster.” I also liked when Dave quipped that he and Julia are like the “Connecticut women’s basketball team of couples”: so good at what they do that nobody else should even bother playing.)

By contrast, there’s definitely room for improvement when it comes to the two extreme couples. It’s tiresome to watch Vance and Amy do nothing but scream at each other, and Rex and Leigh are more irritating-irritating than funny-irritating. The pacing, too, seems a little off — individual scenes go slowly, even though quite a lot of plot is packed into an episode.

But neither the bad things nor the good things about Perfect Couples are bad or good enough: The bland whole of the show is less than the sum of its mildly stimulating parts. I’ll probably catch at least one more episode, if only to see how the pendulum swings (and because I’ll be watching the shows that sandwich it anyway).

How about you, PopWatchers? Did you love or hate it, or were you, like me, left with a distinct feeling of “meh”?

Watched all of five minutes. Recognized the dude from the Beneful dog food commercial. He put more life into that dog food commercial than he did into this performance. Off.

    • googie

Five minutes also..I agree with you 100%.

  • John

the Ladies are nice to look at!

    • Three Dollar Bill

So is the dude from the Beneful dog food commercial.

  • Kate

Hate it! I thought this episode might be better than the pilot. I was wrong!

  • J

They were all kind of annoying, and I don’t think I laughed once. I won’t be watching again. At least Olivia Munn has the Daily Show, because I can’t see Perfect Couples lasting.

    • Mr. Holloway

      Agree mostly.

I thought the cold open was pretty funny. I also thought Bornheimer was ok. The straight couple was tolerable, but only because they were kind of bland.

Everyone else was pretty much horrible. It was painful.

  • Jess

Loved this show. Thought is was good and should grow from here. Will keep watching

    • John

There’s no need for sarcasm, Jess.

  • tracy bluth

Can I just ask…what is this big fuss over Olivia Munn? She was okay on Attack of the Show but I don’t find her funny on The Daily Show at all. Maybe it’s just me.
Watched about five minutes and turned it off…I’ll stick to watching The Waitress on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

    • Monica

AMEN. I don’t get the fuss over her at all, nor do I find her funny on The Daily Show. I’ve never seen Attack of the Show, so I can’t pass judgement on that.

    • goose

Because she is incredibly hot. That is the reason. For reference, since you are a lady, I guess someone like the incredibly unfunny, talentless ashton kutcher would be a similar example

      • Angel

Ha ha ha ha….its funny cuz it’s true..But I’m a big fan of Olivia and i pray that the show gets better, not to get off subject but i didnt like King of the Hill when it first came on and look how long that lasted lol

    • Mae

ditto. i don’t find her attractive at all either. or funny. or interesting.

    • Lost!

THANK YOU! I do not understand the fuss over Olivia Munn either. I am sure guys find her hot, but her comedic timing is off and I feel like she is always a little outside herself, admiring how hot and funny she thinks she is. TERRIBLE actress!

  • Luddite

Skipped it. And will continue to do so. I’d appreciate it if NBC could just swap Community and Perfect Couples so I don’t have to fill that half hour waiting for The Office to start.

  • Flyer

We kept it on because it was a bridge between “Community” and “The Office.” If only CBS would air “Big Bang Theory” at 8:30 p.m…sigh…. Anyway, I found all of the yelling and screaming unpleasant, so I tuned it out and used the half-hour to read. Hubby, on the other hand, got some decent laughs out of it.

    • Sarcastic Pr*ck

People stop watching television so they can…read books? This is completely unacceptable! Do not ever do this again.

      • Eileen Doherty

Watch more episodes. Or read between the subtle lines of “Sarcastic Pr*ck” and catch up on your reading for half an hour instead. I’ll bet if you watch more episodes, you will eventually smile. But, be careful: you might crack your face. (Sorry. It’s almost impossible to make some people laugh, but that one usually gets them!) Thank you for this show.

    • lisa

Same here. I kept it on because I thought it would go by pretty fast. At least I got to catch up on some reading. Now that I can dodge “Outsourced”, it’d be nice to get this show out of the way for an uninterrupted 2 hour block of good comedy.

  • Kate

Next week will be my first real conflict about the show, this week I got to do my favorite thing, pause Community, go shower, dry my hair, finish making dinner, and then caught up to commercials with about two minutes left in P&R. So obviously I watched this and this is how I feel, heh. Its funnier parts were funnier than the Office this week, but I smiled during the whole Office episode whereas I was trying to see what the score was on a hockey game I didn’t really care about during low points. I think there is something to be said about maybe cutting out the friend couple, they don’t have the appeal that Joey and Phoebe did on Friends so that you actually like and care about them apart from how they effect the core group.

  • Dalia

I saw about 5 minutes and then got really annoyed. I don’t know, I just didn’t like it. Perhaps it was my Parks & rec anticipation making me feel like everything else was just rubbish but I didn’t want this on my tv.

  • Jack

Poor Munn. She’ll get more work. David Walton? Terrible…with so many good actors out of work, how does this guy keep getting sitcoms????

    • googie

I know! I said “him again”.

  • john_c

It had it funny moments but I have not made my final judgment yet.

    • john_c

It may be more interesting if one couple is gay.

      • Bzozo

        Maybe you should apply !

  • Sara

I was expecting more from Olivia Munn, and ended up liking her character the least. I’m not sure I can explain why… I guess if she’s going to really sell an irritating character, she needs to be more sincere. The character itself is sincere, but she’s just not pulling it off.

  • PK

It was excruciating sitting through this between Community and The Office.

Felt like it went on for an hour, not 22 minutes.

    • lisa

I’m with ya. I kept looking at the clock to see when it was over. Felt like an eternity!

  • rudy

Not a strong pilot, that’s for sure. This show has a lot of work to do to make it regular viewing and not make me internet surf in-between Community and The Office

    • Beck

This was the second show. The pilot was worse but they shot all the episodes before the pilot aired so I wouldn’t hold your breath on much changing.
