You might appreciate the MTM appearance more if you knew about her personal history with BW. They have been close friends for decades. Betty wrote a memoir in the mid-90′s (great book, BTW) and Mary is mentioned all throughout. Their families vacationed together, dined together frequently. Truly BFFs. I’m sure her appearance on Hot was very special to them. And give me a break, Mary did a great job.
No she didn’t. You may have laughed at the lines as they were written, but her delivery was awful.
I think maybe part of the reason why her delivery came across as “stiff” was because she was trying to play a hardened, bad-@assed character, totally unlike the likeable, self-conscious, sometimes insecure Mary Richards. So it’s hard to judge her performance, based on apples and oranges.
I love how Mary’s character told Betty’s Elka that she has spunk and that she “hates spunk.” Glad the writers thought to write that line and how it was what Ed Asner’s Mr. Grant told Mary during her interview at the show in the pilot episode of Mary Tyler Moore.
Loved the show and enjoyed the recap, but, no offense Tanner, there’s no way you should be a paid, professional writer with the numerous misspellings and other errors I noticed in your article. (That is one of my pet peeves–people on professional websites who can’t spell their way out of a dictionary or navigate a grammar check!)
There was one line not mentioned, and I won’t remember it verbatim, but Wayne Knight’s character was talking about getting married and losing his (sports memorabilia)balls and Elka deadpanned, “Get married and losing your balls–sounds about right to me.” Funny.
Missed the first few minutes, so I didn’t see Mary, but I’m sure it will be rebroadcast 20 times between now and the next episode, so I’ll try to catch it again. As to MTM’s appearance, I remember she is married to a doctor, but I can’t remember if it’s a plastic surgeon. (Several older actresses married plastic surgeons, imagine that!)

I love this show and last nites episode was worth waiting on. All the characters are very good and I would not want to see any of them go. Needless to say Betty White makes the show.

This show has improved 500% now that it has dropped the boring age-joke-every-20-seconds format!

I thought Mary did a good job. I loved her lines. Once an icon always an icon.
MTM is legally blind now for years from her diabetes. That is part of why she looked different. She has had a tough road fighting it. She looks good given everything and her age.
