Way more often than not, prequels are terrible movies. Honestly, name a great prequel, one that’s nearly as good as or better than the original film. I certainly can’t think of one. So color me relieved that this has morphed into a different movie.

      um…batman begins
      the new star trek
      the birds prequel
need i go on?plus all these new movies werent made by THE ORIGINAL SCREENWRITER!

My understanding is that Ridley couldn’t make the 2 part movie he wanted…I read there were budget constraints. So, this may be a way to do something else that was on his mind. I think Ridley has good movie making instincts and I can see him delaying the prequel project in order to do it right while also doing something else that was of interest to him. I haven’t been disappointed with Ridley’s films so I’ll be patient and see what comes down the road. I think it will happen eventually. It’s been 30 years, so what’s another 5 at this point?

Damon Lindelof was going to write this, so it would have been crap anyway.

      yea lost sucks

Everyone is failing to read (including EW) the actual words Ridley Scott has used- he doesn’t ONCE say that an Alien will not factor into the film. I’m willing to be you an Alien (probably a new variety, but still vaguely recognizable) will be the antagonist within the film. After all, he doesn’t say it won’t and he does state that Giger is involved. Don’t jump the gun guys…you don’t even have a script.

when it says “dna” it means the origins of “a horror script”not THE horror script of aliens, hes taking the script and bastardizing it into something its not supposed to be…i might as well photoshop out all the monsters and put in aliens to be satisfying.

I can understand how people think this is kind of cool. But honestly I’m very disappointed and here’s why. When Fox executives throw there two cents in on every project they’ve ever done, in recent years it’s become a trajety. Thats why I’m worried here. They were going to remake Alien and then it turned into A vs P, and we all know how that turned out. So before everyone says, “yea but this is Ridley Scott,” I still would have much preferred to see the Alien franchise fixed and made once again into a legend masterpiece. I am very disappointed with this decision, even though I’m sure it will be a good film. I would rather have seen a prequel to his famous Alien thriller.

yea but this is Ridley Scott.

ridley scott….as far as im concerned it doesnt matter about avp or any of that crap.ive loved the mythos and have with every fiber of being for YEARS…..”if u make it they will come”..u remember those words from somewhere, hu?? it means if its JUST a movie about aliens from the ORIGINAL director, itll be a hit but u GOT TOO SCARED??????O.O…..you, sir are dead to me….i dont love just only the movie, i love the monster, and u just destroyed that…….forever. ive waited YEARS for this and in one fell swoop u thought making a movie about the GREATEST of movie monsters was TRIVIAL(?) enough not to???…ur a disappointment. i thought more of u for years than i should have.

  • kaze

By the way, at least THE THING prequel is doin it right…not backin down cause the directors scared of the franchise.

  • Aaron

No! I want the real Alien 3 where Newt and Hicks never died. And no depressing prison planet.

  • Austin

It’s good news, but he should still make the Alien prequel.

  • Randy

I am disappointed but not surprised by this news. In my opinion the prequel could have gone in one of two ways. It could have been 100% true to the original story wherein Alien was the story of humankinds first contact with the alien species, so the prequel would be an alien story … no human characters. –OR- The events aboard the alien derelict that proceed Alien had human involvement that was unknown or covered up by the authorities.

The alien only story would be a hard sell to the suits in Hollywood. Where’s the human interest? How does the audience connect with the characters if none of them are human? But such a story could have been very good science fiction. The other angle (clandestine human involvement) could have cheapened the greatness of Alien, which is a ‘first contact’ masterpiece.

I’m really surprised by the overwhelming support for the change in direction Scott has taken. The new plot sounds like it may have potential, but I strongly believe that it needs to contain meaningful references to the origin or purpose of Scott’s original Alien, not only because it would be interesting and worth watching, but because that is what he originally promoted and what he has consistently stated he would do over the years. Therefore, I find it a huge disappointment that the rumours for the new plot are only suggesting a minor and loose reference to the original. Scott did such a great job with the script for the original that there are many different and interesting plots that could be used for a prequel/s. Also, I think that the franchise deserves to be saved from the shocking sequels that were made after Cameron’s Aliens, and the plot from the first two allows this. The other concern I have with this change in direction is will another director now attempt to fill the void and make direct prequels instead of Scott, thus risking the quality of the overall storyline? When you stop to consider films that have experienced significant changes in the plot after scripting has been completed, they more often than not end up a disappointment because the new ideas are not the original thoughts that have been thought through by the director or writer over a period of time. One wonders whether the studio had a part to play in Scott’s decision to revamp the script.

This is garbage! I’ll see it on DVD. There are only 2 Directors to do justice to Alien. Scott and Cameron period. I was so looking to see the back story. And I’m sure many more fans were. Now the writer from lost! Please that series was retarded! FAT man never lost weight marooned on an island. Scott could have shown Hollywood how you direct a prequel as an example and standard. Aliens DNA in the story… please. Dont tease the fans. Total let down. Just like the Halo Movie and the Gears of War Movie which will never be made. But how many more Adam Sandler, Drew Barrymoore movies can the world stomach. Before Hollywood gives us a great story again.

With Lindelhof as screenwriter, the suck factor shoots through the roof. Recent news that additional “co-writers” have been brought on board indicate, though, that Scott has realized his ghastly mistake and is working to fix it within contractual boundaries. We can only hope that a hack like Lindelhof doesn’t actually contribute anything.

THE GREAT MR. SCOTT should put star maps from a galaxey about 20 light years away.. the space jockey is trying to send a message back home but is unable to thats why he died in his chair the aliens were getting hunger and got out and killed the space jockey, the main computer in the ship should look damage along with the alien holding tanks.. The jockey is some how lost in are part of the universe, not just maps of planets should be shown but maps of galaxeys as well….. the space jockey and the aliens are the same kind and are from the same SOLAR SYSTEM in space, thats why the two look alike in away…….this is were the first aliens comes into play “MOTHER PICK UP ON THE STRANGE UNKNOWN SIGNAL AND IS ORDER TO CHECK IN AND REPORT BACK HER FINDINGS” while on her way back to earth with her shippment and GREAT CREW……. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE FIRST ALIEN MOVIE MR SCOTT…………..

  • Kieth

Of course I will see it but the franchise really has a life cycle of its own. I’ve been with the series the whole way through and I would like to know the origin. Ridley MUST do the prequel if it is to be done, and while he still has time.
