I’m waiting for “The Last Starfighter” remake lol I just got that movie on Blu-Ray, the special effects are TERRIBLE but I loved it so much as a kid.
The article left out the Goonies. Hollywood is bringing it back as well and I cringe at that very thought. Let lying dogs rest.
The problem with STAR WARS and INDIANA JONES was that George Lucas went too high-tech. Part of the appeal of the older movies was that they weren’t CGI, they were realized practically, and sometimes with matte paintings. But they looked and felt more REAL. In the age of overused CGI, the magic of film is diminished. It used to be sparing, for some of the dinosaur effects in JURASSIC PARK, but those were hyper-real. Compare those to the alien effects in the last INDY movie. There’s an over-reliance on CGI that takes away the magic.
I have to agree with you about the CGI used in the movies there was to much used.
The success of a remake, for me, depends on a few things.
1. What about the original made it popular? (I’m assuming here that unpopular movies don’t usually get remakes later on.)
2. Is the remake designed to be just like the original?
In my experience, trying to remake the past *exactly* rarely succeeds. Just making things over with new faces but no other changes seems a little insulting. What motivation other than money could have spawned such a move? Since there is also usually a glow of nostalgia around the originals, the remakes tend to fight an uphill battle.
There are also pitfalls in remaking certain types of movies. Public sentiment changes over the years, and what may be funny or poignant in the original may not resonate with current audiences. Remaking the movie without updating it may mean audiences won’t connect.
Then, on the other side of the fence, there is such a thing as updating it too much. Too many changes in the wrong places, and it will cease to resemble the movie (or at least the parts of the movie) that people love. Now, it is true that a new set of people will still love the movie on its own merit, but it would probably lose the audience that came to see it because of its connection to the original.
All of that being said, there are some situations where remakes work (and some specific ones that just defy the odds and work anyway). Technology, for example, may allow a remake to perfect what used to be hokey special effects. If the movie is old enough, having the remake in color might be enough to tip the balance.
To sum up this very lengthy opinion, I lean towards the theory that remakes are not necessarily doomed, but they require a very sophisticated touch and the odds are against them.

Ok I read the article now. And I maintain my position. Hey NEW MILLENIUM – WRITE YOUR OWN EFFING STORIES!!!!! Doesn`t anyone have original ideas anymore? Or is it just that studios don’t want to pay for them? All I know is that if they remake Goonies, I’m going to have to jump off a building. Great, now that I’ve said it out loud it’s going to happen…Efffffff.

What was the point in me spending a year and a half and almost $100,000 trying to get into film school if all hollywood wants to make are horrible remakes of 80s movies??
Those who grew up with the great movies from the 80′s are very protective. I saw most of them in the theaters, including all Indiana Jones movies and the original Ghostbusters. The movie experience was different back then. If you wanted to see the movie, you went to the theater. You didn’t wait for it to come on video, because it took about a year. Re-watching them now you can see how the storyline was front and center with CGI second. That’s the problem with movies now…it focuses too much on the special effects with a weak story. I love the original Ghostbusters and hope they stay true to the characters and basic story otherwise it will feel hollow. I don’t even consider Indiana Jones 4 as part of the series, because it didn’t have the same magic as the trilogy. Besides…who wants to see an older Indiana?

Hey, I’m 23 and I despise these remakes for exactly the reasons you stated. Hollywood needs to come up with new, original ideas for once.
I didn’t grow up in the ’80s – in fact, I wasn’t even born – but I definitely see where you’re coming from. I can’t imagine how I’d feel when people start remaking or putting unnecessary sequels to the touchstones of the ’90s and ’00s. You didn’t even mention how they’re (reportedly) remaking Total Recall, rebooting the Alien franchise and churning out a sequel to Top Gun. I feel bad, I really do.

When I see remakes popping up, it leads me to believe that hollywood has no original ideas anymore. The remakes I have seen have been major disappointments to me so whenever I see another come out, I usually avoid going to see them. I’ll leave remakes for those who never saw the original because those are the only viewers that can watch the low quality films and be amazed.
I think the only exception to the article is the fact that John Carpenter’s “The Thing” was, in fact, a re-make of the original and was a significant improvement. For the most part, though, Hollywood needs to stop messing with re-makes and doing something more creative. They are making millions of dollars to do this, after all.
I understand your point but don’t totally agree. One day the world will figure out the equation for bringing movie classics back from the dead, I’m a firm believer in practice makes perfect
. Also a lot of these remakes, spinoffs and sequels involve the original creators, if we revere their earlier works so much, don’t we owe them the chance of wowing us again? I recommend taking a deep breath, putting your feet up and enjoying the movies, I’m looking forward to these old-timers briging back the ghostbusters for one more whacky adventure!
