Jim Carrey's 'SNL' promos: He's back!

Jim Carrey is hosting Saturday Night Live this weekend, and holy moly, that dude has not aged at all. At all! Behold these promos, in which Carrey does not at all look 13 years older than Jason Sudeikis:

This is Carrey’s second time hosting. The first was way back in 1996 — back when Norm MacDonald was doing Bob Dole and Carrey was promoting The Cable Guy. Perhaps you remember overprotective lifeguard?

You can also spot Nancy Walls in a bizarre faux infomercial at the end:

Carrey’s obviously a brilliant comedian, and watching these old clips I’m struck by how high-energy and almost frantic the humor is — not just from Carrey, but from the SNL cast at the time, too. The SNL of today has a really different vibe, and I’m curious to see how Carrey plays with that.

How do you think he’ll do, PopWatchers?

    Okay! Let’s kick it off!

    Kristen Wiig sucks!

    • angie

Ugh…the crap part is – when Kristen first joined the show…I grew to like her.. but now she is sooooo overused and annoying…I cringed every time she appears in a skit.

      • Edward

I think you’re right–it seems like Kristen stars in literally every single skit. It’s gotten to the point that it’s weird to see her in only a minor role in a skit, like when she played the housekeeper in the “What’s My Name?” skit when Paul Rudd hosted. But she usually does a decent job, and she’s hot, so that helps.

    • Will

wow, looks like you all fell into benjy’s trap…It seems like every SNL post on EW has to have a Kristen Wiig tyraid, it’s become predictable.

      • John B.

        It’s “TIRADE”, not ‘tyraid”

    • Kebert Xela

Oh, and Saturday Night Live hasn’t been funny since… (Eddie Murphy, Phil Hartman, Dan Akroyd, Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, Michael Myers, Dana Carvey, etc…) left.

  • Mr. Holloway

I remember the previous episode Carrey hosted. He was also pretty great as one of the “Roxbury” guys.

How has he only hosted once before?!

    • llevinso

I think I recall Chris Kattan and Will Ferrell saying Carrey was the best guest host to be a Roxbury guy.

      • ericalina

not that it really counts for anything but about 5 years ago E or Comedy Central did a countdown of the best SNL episodes, and the Jim Carrey one was voted #1.

    • thomasf94117

I think that was the first time they did Roxbury guys.

  • Penny

Add in The Black Keys and I’m pretty excited about this episode.

    • Brandon Routh IS Superman

Big Time Rush should have performed their songs the City is Ours and their song “Count on Me”

      • Maureen

I think they might be saving Big Time Rush for whenever Miranda Cosgrove hosts. ;)

  • Aprilcot26

I’m so excited! Carrey’s first time hosting is one of my all-time favorite episodes of SNL.

    • Amanda

That one was so good! I still say “ride the snake” in that creepy voice.

    • chris

yeah, but it don’t matter, new writer’s, not as funny cast.. look what they did with Betty White. They finally had a potentially hilarious episode and ruined it by poor writing. But I am glad they let Jim host while he was extremely popular and the writing was good, they should have had Betty White 10-20 years ago.

  • Edward

I still remember Carrey’s first show–hard to believe it’s been almost 15 years. That was the first time they ever did the Roxbury skit. Also the hot tub lifeguard and the “Ride the Snake” weight loss program, which was weird but funny. And the Joe Pesci Show with Mark McKinney playing Carrey and Carrey playing Jimmy Stewart. I also remember one of my favorite bands at the time, Soundgarden, was the musical guest.

    • S.O.

Has that really been 15 years ago? DAMN, I’m getting old. I was just graduating High School.

    • S.O.

Plus if you look closely when Soundgarden played, the front of the drummer’s equipment say “GO SONICS”!!!

  • ollie

loved the ep he did the first time was fking funny as all heck. the skits i remeber most is the roxberry, lifequard and the one i liked best the cheerleader with oteri and ferral

  • Jenny

Can we get the funny Jim Carrey back?

    • Stacie

No. He’s dead and buried inside a bank vault.

  • Luke

I bet Carrey could do a better Obama impersonation than Fred Armisen can. Honestly, WHY do they keep using him to play Obama? He’s awful.

  • ollie

    oops meant ferrell

  • Kanye

I thought he would be a member of the Five-Timers Club. How about a Fire Marshall Bill? “Lemme show you sumptin!”

    • Penny

Are you confusing “In Living Color” with SNL?

  • UrbanLegendGenerator

The boy in the audience next to the bald guy with the white shirt is a young Seth Myers. He was just an audience member but later got to talk to some of the cast members during down time between sketches. It led him to to become the comic and SNL performer he is today.

    • Jazmondo

That is not Seth Meyers, it’s Fred Wolf, who was a long time writer on the show.

  • Justin K

It may be juvenile but the Jim Carrey’s Back… was pretty funny.

  • UGH

Best skit ever would be if Jim dressed up as Jenny McCarty and did his impression of her doing her impression of him that’s she’s been passing off lately as her own.

  • llevinso

The lifeguard sketch is one of my all-time favorite SNL sketches. Hope this weekend’s ep is actually funny. You know, like the old days.

  • JohnDoe

Considering Jim is funnier than all of the people combined on SNL right now, they should let him take lead on most sketches, or let him write his own characters, like he did for In Living Color. Hell…even bring back Fire Marshall Bill or Vera de Milo (lol).

    • Kelcie

YAY! I think Jim’s gonna rock on SNL. I’m looking forward to this episode.

Fire Marshall Bill is overrated, though…
