Welcome back! I’ve missed all of you. It’s hard to believe this is season 21 of The Bachelor/Bachelorette. That is an amazing run in network TV, and I want to thank you for making that happen. As you all know, we tried something a little different this season. For the first time in the show’s history, we brought back a Bachelor for a “do-over.” The reaction to Brad has been mixed; many of you were skeptical and some of you were even a little angry. I have to admit, I kind of like that. We’ve never gone into a season where our Bachelor or Bachelorette wasn’t your overwhelming favorite. It’s going to be very interesting to begin this season with someone who, from the start, needs to prove himself to not only the women on the show but also to you, our fans. Believe me when I tell you that none of this pressure was lost on Brad — or me for that matter. When Brad and I met up that first night, despite his trademark smile and Texas charm I could tell this guy was feeling the weight of the world on his shoulders. Say what you will about Brad — you have to give the man credit for stepping up and owning what he did. He hasn’t just said, “I’m sorry” and moved on with life in Austin. He has stepped up to prove publicly in front of the entire world that he is a changed man. He is essentially putting all his chips on the table for one roll of the dice. If he comes off as anything less than sincere or committed to this, he knows he’ll be run out of town. That’s why my final words of advice to him that first night were “don’t screw this up.” So it was with all this pressure hanging over us that we sat down that first night at the mansion for our chat. Yes, we’re back at the same house again. If I’m not mistaken, Brad was the first Bachelor to ever use this house three years ago. During our chat, as you saw, I surprised Brad by bringing out the two women he left standing at the rose altar last time, Jenni and DeAnna. He had no idea they were there that night or that this was going to happen. I thought this was a great idea for several reasons. First of all, I wanted to see if Brad was truly a changed man and would own up to what he did and explain why. Brad couldn’t just say it wasn’t “right”; these two women wouldn’t let him off that easy. I was impressed to see him admit that upon reflection — and yes, some therapy — that he wasn’t really the man he was pretending to be back then. He wasn’t capable at that point in his life to commit and truly fall in love. He is truly sorry for hurting Jenni and DeAnna. The women have obviously moved on so this meeting wasn’t about love or an opportunity missed. This was about an overdue apology and step one in Brad proving to you, and more importantly to himself, that he’s a changed man.
After our talk it was time for the 30 women to arrive. All Bachelors are nervous at this moment. This is when they finally realize, “Holy cow, I’m the Bachelor and this is really going to happen.” Despite having been there before, Brad was still anxious. He knew how it all worked but he had no idea what the women’s reactions were going to be. I should explain at this point that I usually watch the shows by myself the week before they air so I can write this blog and be ready to do any press interviews I have lined up to promote the show. This first episode was a little different. As some of you may have read on my Twitter page I decided to watch this first episode illegally (sorry ABC) with my family and friends over the holidays while I was home in Dallas. This gave me a whole different perspective on the show, as you’ll read below. I should warn you, yes there was wine involved in the viewing of this show. The first thing I learned watching this with family and friends (most of them women) is that there is a game you can play, toasting every time you see Brad without his shirt on. I quickly realized after two segments that this is not a good game to play if you’re trying to write a blog and stay awake through the end of the show.
If Brad was wondering how the women would react, all his fears were quickly realized when the first woman out of the limo, Chantal (not to be confused with Shawntel the funeral director), gave Brad a good slap across the face for all the women in America. Let me answer the questions my friends had. Yes, the slap was very, very real and no, Brad had no idea it was coming. He handled it much better than I would have and actually got a good laugh out of it. During the arrivals you had the usual fun and games as women tried to make a good or lasting first impression — and a few of them did. Brad actually liked Chantal and her slap. Ashley S. and her cute southern drawl set him at ease. Emily also made a solid first impression. Right now Brad doesn’t know her tragic story, but she is someone you’ll get to know a lot more about. The woman who really stood out to Brad, and I think you could tell by his reaction, was Michelle. She is also someone you will get to know and she’ll be a force to be reckoned with in the house this season. Now normally I would have continued watching the show and making my notes, but because I was watching this with a group and somebody had the great idea of toasting every time we saw Brad without his shirt on, we got a little sidetracked. Because of Michelle’s last name, somebody brought up the singer Eddie Money. I had to explain to someone in our group that Eddie was not a member of Van Halen (that’s Eddie Van Halen) but was in fact a solo artist with hits like “Two Tickets to Paradise” and “Baby Hold On.” After pausing the show and discussing Eddie Money for about five minutes, we were ready to move on. (Personal note here: This is the last time I’ll preview the show with a group of friends and family!)
Once the women got in the house and the cocktail party began, so did the personal attack on Brad. He knew it might be tough and that he would get some questions about his past, but I don’t think he expected as much as he got. I think it got to the point where he was a little frustrated. Overall, Brad handled himself very well that first night putting all the women at ease, and answering every question they had as open and honestly as he could. One person we have to discuss is Madison. Everybody at my house was screaming, “Come on!” so I assume you were as well. I loved how Brad just flat out called her out on the fangs. Is Madison a model that wants to be noticed? Probably so, but that’s something Brad has to figure out. Although he has a good idea that’s the case, there is something about her that intrigues him (not the teeth) so he wanted to keep her around at least one more week to see if there’s more to this woman than just her overbite. One of the crowd favorites at my viewing party was Raichel the manscaper. First let me say there was a guy at my party who didn’t know what manscaping was. Is that possible? I get if that’s not your thing, but isn’t it common knowledge what it is? Brad’s reaction to the idea of getting his “undercarriage” waxed or getting “bat wings” (I hadn’t heard of that one myself) was fantastic.
The first impression rose went to the sweet southern woman Ashley S. From the moment she stepped out of the limo she made Brad happy and relaxed. While so many other women were aggressive or put Brad on the defensive, she was sweet and made his life easy. Some in my group think she looks and sounds a little like Tenley — what do you guys think? My favorite part of the first episode is the very end in what we call the super tease that promotes the entire season. As you saw, once again we will be traveling the world to places like Costa Rica, Anguilla, and South Africa. This season is fantastic and very different than any we’ve ever had. Brad obviously brings a very different element, but so does this group of women. I always say what makes this show so interesting is the people and the baggage and history they bring with them. This season we have stories we’ve never seen or heard before and that makes Brad’s journey very intriguing. I have said in the press there are no major “scandals” this season, but that definitely doesn’t mean this season is without its fair share of drama! Brad is in love but how he gets there, whom it’s with, and what the real story is will definitely be worth watching! I’d like to thank my friends at EW.com for having me back here in this forum to chat with you this season. Some of you have already heard but for those that haven’t I want to announce a new fun way to check out all things Bachelor. It’s our official Bachelor web site, TheBachelor.warnerbros.com. The Bachelor season premiere recap: Dreamboat or D—–bag?

Hi Chris! So glad you’re back! I have such a love/hate relationship with this show, you are a big reason I keep coming back even when I don’t really want to. So allegedly the women didn’t know it was going to be Brad. I want to know then, what were they told about him? Did they know it was a former Bachelor, but just not told which one? Or were they just told it would be someone they’d probably recognize? Or what? You’re playing the wrong drinking game btw- you should drink every time you hear the word “journey”. Then you’d REALLY have a hard time finishing your blog!
Here’s a question – why didn’t you have a SINGLE woman of color amongst the bacheloreetes. Ali must have really pissed you guys off by choosing the one Latino you’d cast so it seems to me that you are making sure that doesn’t happen again. Shame on you.
oops bachelorettes not bacheloreetes.
I respect the fact that they don’t try to patronize us with token minorities. If the bach/es state that they aren’t interested in people of other ethnicities, don’t put the people of color through the humiliation of being discarded right away. The Bachelor = Casa Blanca. The Bachelor: The Other White House
Personally, if I were the bachelorette (as if!) I would have been open to all ethnicities. But I have to agree with Pinky on this. I’m guessing if anyone’s to ‘blame’ for this ‘oversight’, it’s the bachelor himself and not the producers. I noticed that there were more brunettes than blondes too – I’m guessing Brad has a thing for caucasian brunettes. And hell, there shouldn’t be anything wrong with having a personal taste!
I have to agree with Regan. Blame The Bachelor not the show or producers. He probably told them his prefrences.
Why should they waste their time? The bachelor will never pick a person of color.
DiMi..you must be kidding! Why would ABC be upst with Ali choosing Roberto? I’m sure they are thrilled at the great possibility of another marriage. I think the object of this show is getting a couple to the alter no matter what color or nationality they might be. Roberto is one amazing man!
Totally agree with Jujubee, I definitely have a love/hate relationship with this show and your blog actually keeps me coming back. As for Brad, I felt sorry for the poor guy, the girls were brutal. I personally think that it was for the best he didn’t choose either or the girls. Who could have dragged one into a pseudo real relationship before it fell apart before the media (cough…Jake..cough) but he actually spared them even more heartbreak.
I agree…if he didn’t like em then he didn’t like em! I mean why in the world would he propose if he didn’t think he could marry them. I don’t understand why he is so hated…he was actually honest! IMO
How bout drinking every time you hear the phrase “leap of faith?” Season after season after season…
Or drink every time you hear “for the right reason…” It’s nonstop.
… or every time a woman is described as “amazing”?
Or everytime you hear “changed”. Now that would be a fun drinking game. ; )
Or “journey.”
Or a date is described as “awesome.”
Or “next level!”
“connection”
@jujube – I laughed out loud at the drinking whenever you hear journey!! Sooo true– and maybe do a double if you hear “amazing journey” !!
)
P.S… and Good Luck to Brad. I believe he’s sincere. Also– Chris– could we have a new bachelor next season — and stop recycling the ones who aren’t picked? (Same with The Bachelorette!) K thanks.
On Jimmy Kimmel, they said you drink every time you hear the word “amazing”. Boy, you could be drunk for days if you did that!!
The blog might actually be the better part of the show. I never watched Brad’s season, but watched all the fall out from it. I mean if there was no Brad incident then there would be no Deanna or Jillian or the whole Jason fiasco and the last ordeal with Jake. Before Brad’s season the Bachelor was kind of waning a bit, he kind of reinvigorated the entire series So The Bachelor actually owes Brad alot for doing what he did. I don’t particularly like what he did, but since the majority of the couples break up anyways Brad might have actually done the smart thing at the time. Hopefully this season will be worth watching.
ITA – I didn’t watch this show until the finale of Brad’s first season. I’d heard a rumor that the Bachelor actually used some common sense and didn’t pick either woman. I’ve been watching ever since more as a guilty pleasure than a romance. To continue to villainize Brad seems crazy to me and completely disingenuous. I guess you’d rather he proposed to one of the women and then dumped her on TV ala Jake? The only thing wrong with Brad is his inexplicable belief that he can find love on this TV show.
EXACTLY! I never saw his season, but unless he was a jerk besides not leading a woman into believing he’s gonna marry her when he doesn’t love her, I personally find nothing wrong with him. I actually respect him more for it. Somewhere I thought I read (though I can’t find it) that Brad had gone to the producers before the finale and said he didn’t love either of them in the whole in love marrying way but they told him he had to do the ring and ceremony whether he picked one or not. It’s in his contract. So he tried to get out of all the whole thing of leading them on that far but a contract is a contract.
I totally agree! Couldn’t have said it better, Kim!
I totally agree! I find it ridiculous how mad people still are over this. Get over it already.
I love this show! I’ve watched every season but the first. I agree with the comment Stacie made. Why choose someone when you know there is no chance at a life together. He just spared both girls greater pain later on. Good luck Brad.
Welcome Back Chris!!!!
I love reading your take on things- thanks for sharing!
This show is LAME!!! It encourages bad dating practices
Spoilers below about who he chooses…
He chooses me! Chantel Obrien!
THANKS Shaye!! I appreciate your heads-up!
What is Michelle’s last name, and why did it lead to a discussion of Eddie Money? That was so random…..just stick with the show, ok?
Could it be that HER last name is Money?!
duh…it wasn’t random & everyone watching at my house when her name popped up wondered the same thing.
Her real last name isn’t “Money.” It used to be “Cartwright” until she went off the deep end…
EW, you have to figure out how to curb the spoilers in the comments or you’re going to lose readers. People who spoil the ending of show that just started are total losers.
It’s the worst kept secret out there, son. Been known for a while…
Welcome back Chris! I always look forward to your blogs and insights — so please, give us MORE insights! More behind the scenes stuff! Kristen gives us great recaps, but we’re counting on YOU to give us a chance to peek behind the ‘wizard’s curtain’ to see what REALLY happens. (Does that make you the wizard??)
As the show started tonight, I sat back in my cozy chair and told my husband, “Dang, I just LOVE this show.” He rolled his eyes and went on about how it has no redeeming value. But the fact that it’s entertained me for 21 seasons is all the redeeming value I need.
Dang, I just love this show.
Good season opener and blog, Chris…But geez, now I gotta go digging thru my archives for my best-of Eddie Money CD. Thanks, I think
Whoa whoa whoa – since when was Jake Pavelka the fans’ “overwhelming favorite”? I remember most people being totally dissatisfied when he was announced the Bachelor. Anyway, Brad seems like a good guy, and I truly can’t understand why people STILL give him a hard time. I hope he doesn’t have to keep apologizing for himself the whole season!
Chris- Your new website can NOT be viewed from Canada? Is there anyway to fix that please?
I was very surprise at the slap that was heard across the country and was interesting that she was the first woman to meet Brad and was the last one to get the a rose at the ceremony. The one thing that really surprised me was when a woman really grabbed Brad rear end. Did she received a rose?
He chooses me at the very end!
Actually, according to the bachelor website, her name is spelled Chantal, not Chantel. Find a better use of your time. It’s not really a spoiler if you can’t even spell “your” name correctly.
Chris, isn’t there some way that ABC can stop the idiots, like this one, from getting on here and giving their crap? All of these idiots that think Reality Steve is God
should talk with that big ego jerk and his little groupies! I would be thrilled if ABC would find the mole or moles that are feeding all of this info to that looser and fire all of them. He and his followers are all immature and stupid!
Yes! She was the one that got the first impression rose! It was Ashley S.
This whole season is a joke, it has already been spoiled, Chantal O’Brien is the one he picks! Don’t worry, it won’t last!
I am done with this train wreck, slaps that are planned, have DeAnna on there, which was planned! I wish Chris would just admit it.
If you’re saying you really know who wins then that’s a spoiler and people who give spoilers are scum. You’re scum. Die scum.
I agree that the slap was totally planned. It was obvious.
i found it super offensive. Can you imagine if a guy slapped Jen Sheft on the face because she didn’t chose anyone either? Everyone would be wanting the guy arrested for abuse.
I think Brad should just walk away from this whole twisted franchise. He claimed in a lengthy interview I read about a year ago that he told producers two weeks before the finale that he wasn’t feeling it with anyone and they forced him to go to the end (hoping he’d be able to pick one by then). Why are they of all people trying to blame him for being honest? It was too much.
You’re an a$$hole. It hadn’t been spoiled for everybody, and it’s super obnoxious to put that in this comments section with no warning. This show is a guilty pleasure, no need to condemn people for watching a “joke.”
i watched the intro of the women and the boo-hoo background of the player–sorry, bachelor–and the last four minutes. these women (and the contestant) on the bachelor: pathetic and laughable.’ the biggest losers’ would be a better title. grade f. absolute crap. production is less than two months time. what kind of tragically flawed, unstable people agree to go on the show? i’ve dated people for two months without being able to remember the surnames, so i’m not buying the crazy they’re selling. the ‘love of my life’ in a few weeks. bwah hahaha.fame whores.
Sainsa…You are very fortunate rhat you live in a free country and there are hundreds of channels on your TV. You change the channel to one of your favorite shows on MTV then you won’t be waisting your time by writng your dribble on here.
Dawn -
I’m in Canada and I was able to access the website that Chris linked above.
Looks like another interesting season of the Bachelor. Looking forward to seeing it all!
Susie- I can access the web site, but can’t watch any of the videos?? It tells me my Geographical location it’s not permitted!!!
Dawn, I’m also in Canada and cannot view the video, but would like to. Thanks for asking Chris to see if there’s a way to include all the Bachelor’s fans.
I don’t exactly understand what Brad did that was so horribly wrong exactly…He led 2 women to the finals but chose none right? Every other Bachelor/ette does the exact same thing except to just one of the final two, Am I right? One of them always leaves feeling jilted and lied to.
THANK YOU! I don’t get what was so wrong about what he did either…he was just being honest. Why should he be forced to choose someone if he wasn’t feeling it? I think he handled the situation correctly instead of like these other people-the majority of all of the seasons-who choose someone & are done with them before anyone even has a chance to blink lol.
TOTALLY agree!! never could understand why people (including Brad) feel he did something wrong! No one should be forced into this kind of commitment if they are not feeling it! UGH Brads biggest problem now is that he let people make him believe he did something wrong.
Amen. I actually had respect for him for the choice. That’s changed now. His constant groveling is nauseating.
Exactly. He wasn’t even the first in the franchise to do it. Jen Schefft did it in the 3rd Bachelorette. She was praised as a strong woman while Brad was ripped to shreds. Also, he and Deanna already did the whole meet up and talk thing on that look back/behind the scenes special last year. Deanna said she understood having now been in his shoes. She even said she wished she had done the same thing. He and Deanna had already made their piece so that was nothing but scripted garbage for drama last night.
Ditto — Stop making him grovel for a smart decision. Plus, didn’t he already do a mea culpa with Deanna on the special where we cought up with some previous contestants (and no I do not mean the Bachelor Pad), and did Deanna not reveal later that she wished she had done what Brad did and not pick anyone? Why are ABC, Chris, Brad and Deanna pretending this didn’t happen? I was actually kind of disappointed in Brad’s decision to come back…I though if anyone, he would stay away from this train wreck…although I will still be watching!…Come on, for the fang girl at least.
Also, He did know they were there. You can tell by his look when Chris stated it. AND, he had already made peace with both of them from previous ‘storylines’ on 20/20 and other Bachelor specials starring that idiot girl that was so ‘devastated, hurt and jilted’ by Jason when he realized that she was a spoiled child and he switched to Molly.
JB–you’re thinking of “Melissa” that Jason let go for Molly…in Brad’s case it was “Jennie” was was let go before DeAnna. But I agree with all that DeAnna and Brad met a number of times previously to so-call put this behind them and claimed they were now friends. So for all the avid watchers, the “Gods” of the the show screwed up. Enough with the games…we get it..he had commitment issues. Nothing wrong with that, better than picking someone and just breaking up before the actual show airs. At least he was honest, though going trough this again is just being a media hound. After all his analysis and review of his life with his therapist, I can’t believe a good looking, so-called ready for commitment guy, has to come back and do this show again. I’m sure there are plenty of women he can find on his own without the game.
Totally agree!!! He did nothing wrong!! Regardless of whether he had “commitment issues” or not, no one should be obligated to propose to someone at the end of this show if they don’t feel its right. So what, not he feel OBLIGATED to pick someone at the end of this because all these loonies are calling him a d-bag? Its crazy!
Amen…I whole heartedly agree. He is the only real person to appear. 6wks to find the love of your life…ridiculous!!!! I loved the guy for his honesty, De Anna proved self absorbed “phony” is even more hurtful. She’s the one that should be dragged behind the tractor!
the forced aplologies.(when he had done nothing wrong) got old pretty quickly…So it’s ok to ‘break’ one person’s heart but not two?? And after just 6 to 8 weeks of knowing one another? Yikes! Liked him better before he had all his therapy.
Yes! Yes! Yes! It was so strange to hear him apologize to Deann when she had apologized to him in a 20/20 special and she even told him she wished she’d been as brave as he had been. I mean, come on, the show is fun to watch, but the whole point is to drag at least one woman to the end and break her heart, why should he pretend that he’s interested in a relationship if he’s not?
1. Great point about there always being somebody who’s been led on, manipulated, and left crying.
2. I think people weren’t angry at what he did to the two women; I think people were angry about what he did to US the viewers, which was waste our time. We tune in for a guaranteed happy ending – even if it is a big fake lie – and then we get mad when the actor, I mean, the bachelor doesn’t deliver.
3.I do think he led the two women on more than he had to so he was definitely a cad, but he wasn’t evil.
4. I’m glad he got therapy, but a good therapist would have told him that it is foolhardy to look for love on a reality tv show.
Thank God! I thought I was alone on Bizzaro World all this time until I followed this message trail. I agree with everything said above relating to “What did Brad do that was so wrong?” He had the courage to tell both women that he was not in love with them. I feel like I have left the Twilight Zone. Thanks, folks. One last thing; wouldn’t it be in the cast’s contracts to do no violence? To make love with the staff apparently is. Why is the slapper still on the program.
I so agree with you as well, cudos to him for not choosing a girl he didn’t love.
I agree 100%! I am particularly confused by DeAna’s reaction. The engagement ring on her finger was not the result of her Bachlorette experience, yet she definitely seemed out for revenge last night. I don’t understand why this guy has been vilified.
Dawn- I’m from Canada as well I had no trouble viewing the link.
Vanessa- I can view the link, but not the videos. It says I don’t live in Geographical location.
CH, you’re still a lying a$s turd…
You are so right, Harrison is such a tool. Remember at the end of the Rozlyn tell all: ‘I hope you’ve learned a life lesson and that you become a better person’. Puh-leaze, how condescending and self-righteous can you get?
I’m going to save you all 20 hours of your life. The final two are Emily and Chantal, and he picks Chantal in South Africa. go look it up if you don’t believe me.
1. If you don’t like the show, why are you watching it and commenting on the article?
2. Why do there always have to be people that like to spoil it for others? Do you also like to steal candy from babies???
and do we care spoilerman??noooo, will watch anyway!!!
I wish spoilerman would bite the dust! He was wrong on the Bachelorette and he very possibly is wrong this time!
