'Freaks and Geeks,' 'True Blood,' 'American Idol' among honored shows at PaleyFest 2011

Freaks-And-GeeksThe Paley Center for Media announced four of its honorees for the upcoming PaleyFest 2011: True Blood, The Walking Dead, American Idol, and Freaks and Geeks and Undeclared, which will be “jointly honored on one special evening.” Best. The rest of the line-up will be announced in January, and the fest itself takes place in March. Ah, plenty of time to save up $1,200 for the full pass!

The Freaks and Geeks/Undeclared panel sounds particularly thrilling — Judd Apatow, Jason Segel, Seth Rogen, and Martin Starr on the same stage? Yes, please. Freaks launched the careers of both bona fide drama stars (James Franco) and some of the biggest comedy stars (Rogen), plus the variety of subsequent TV projects from the cast is astounding: Linda Cardellini went on to ER, John Francis Daley to Bones, Segel to How I Met Your Mother, Starr to Party Down, Busy Philipps to Cougar Town. Undeclared‘s Charlie Hunnam stars in Sons of Anarchy, and Carla Gallo is on Bones and Men of a Certain Age. Jay Baruchel was everywhere in 2010 — and Apatow hasn’t exactly been slacking these last few years.

What series would you like to see on a panel, PopWatchers? And wouldn’t you be down for a Freaks/Undeclared reunion special of some kind?

IF IT’S A SPRINT PHONE, THAT MUST MEAN THE LOVED ONES ARE COMING!!

We’ve been through this season after season.  I love the “loved ones” visit.  I fight to have it in the show every season because it always pays off.  Plus, Sprint loves it and Sprint is a major sponsor so if they like it, we really like it.

It’s almost always emotional and on the rare occasions that it’s uncomfortable due to an odd family dynamic, you always learn something new about the Survivors.  This season was pure emotion. Let’s review, shall we? READ FULL STORY »

'The Sing-Off' recap: 'Why does this have to be a competition?'

sing-offPeople are too hard on Nicole Scherzinger. Sure, she sometimes engages in ill-advised extended metaphors about music videos and candy shops. But other times she perfectly articulates the way I’m feeling, such as in her quote in the headline. Why does this have to be a competition? Of course I understand why a group needs to get eliminated each week — that’s how competition shows work — but when every group is delivering such impressive performances every single week, NBC could just air a season of Sing-Off concert specials and I’d still tune in.

Seriously, everyone was on their game last night. The groups sounded wonderful, the judges continued to give refreshingly non-clichéd criticism, and Nick Lachey seemed like he was finally able to relax and just host. (He only asked the judges, “Anything to add?” ONCE!) Plus, the puns were more creative than ever! All in all, it was a complete pleasure to watch, and it makes me sad that there is just one episode left in the season. Good thing season 3 is looking very likely!

The groups were each asked to perform two songs: First, a superstar medley, then a “Judges’ Request,” a song that the judges felt would make each group shine the best. Well, shine they did! Opting for sincerity over kitsch, the contestants offered up some of their best performances of the whole season, and although two groups were supposed to go home at the end of the night, only one did. Here’s how the mayhem went down: READ FULL STORY »

Padma Lakshmi blogs 'Top Chef All Stars': Episode 3

Padma-LakshmiGail was off for last night’s Top Chef but will be back next week. For Gail-less weeks of the Bravo series, turn to EW.com to find out which judge will be blogging. This week, host/judge Padma Lakshmi shares her thoughts on last night’s challenges. (As told to Archana Ram.)

Last night we had an incredibly hard Quickfire. I really felt for the cheftestants because what they had to do was very difficult in the time they had. Frenching all those lamb chops is really difficult and it has to be done really perfectly. Turning the artichokes — those are things you have to do with precision and anytime there’s speed involved, the precision suffers. It was really striking a balance between the precision and the clock, which is always an issue on our show. The clock is their worst enemy. They knew the faster they got done, the more the time they’d have to cook and that’s what they’d be judged on, but if they took too long, they were never going to get to cook, and so on.

There were times when David Chang would get close to the chefs to check out their work, and I purposefully hung back because I didn’t want to be in their way. Normally, when we go around for the Quickfire, I’m right there like the guest judge, but I just wanted to give them space because they were so frenzied, and they had knives in their hands. EW's Big Shill bracket game qualifying round: Frogs, dalmatians, or Wassssup!

Spuds-McKenzieIt’s a sad fact that Joe Camel has frequently polled higher with American five-year-olds than Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny. Sad, yes, but can I say that it’s also kind of awesome, without endorsing cigarette smoking? Awesome in its power, awesome in the subliminal influence that a glasses-wearing, phallic-nosed camel can persuade a kid to pick up a cancer stick that will immediately make him or her cough like an 86-year-old asthmatic. Advertising is a science, and great advertising always works with a smile. Or a laugh. Or perhaps some skin. So Joe shouldn’t take all the blame; he was only doing his job. Looking cool. Confident. Classy. He was selling. Just like Ronald McDonald and Mr. Clean and those adorable Coca-Cola polar bears. They’ve bored a tunnel into our brains, where they pop up from time to time with a jingle or a quip, especially when we’re pushing that shopping cart down Aisle 6.

Many of these marketing icons are beloved characters, and at EW, we’ve decided to celebrate the best of the best with our first Big Shill bracket game. Starting in January, 64 of your favorite corporate mascots, characters, and whatchamacallits will compete head-to-head in a tournament to see who (or what) we adore the most, no matter what they’re selling. (Please keep your five-year-old off the computer so Joe Camel doesn’t win. That would be a PR fiasco.)

The competition to make the field of 64 is intense, and rather than give an entire branch of our bracket to the multitude of memorable Budweiser and Bud Lite sales mascots over the years, we need a qualifying round to see who will represent all of Anheuser-Busch in this spirited contest. Do you miss Louis the Lizard, the surly swamp thing who despised those mouth-breathing frogs? Or do you feel nostalgic for Spuds MacKenzie, that ridiculously cool dog who, rumor has it, was fired after one too many forced skateboard rides drove him to a habit of overindulging in the product he endorsed. Actually, all these commercial figures have a fascinating backstory, and in January, when the Big Shill game officially begins, we’ll examine them all closely. Until then, I ask that you Real Men of Genius nominate your favorite best Bud. And drink responsibly.

'Home Alone' gets reenacted by Twitter actors and doesn't lose its charm

Home-Alone-TwitterFew things signify that the holidays are finally here like my all too frequent viewings of my favorite movie, Home Alone. I’m firmly in the school of thought that Home Alone is a surprisingly timeless tale, but I can totally understand how some people might like to see it done with a more modern twist. An updated Home Alone isn’t necessarily a bad thing — the movie did celebrate its 20th anniversary last month — but losing its 1990 flavor (Kevin’s reindeer sweaters! A fun house without high tech gadgets to catch the robbers!) would, in my eyes, probably negatively impact any 2010 adaptation of my most beloved childhood movie. Enter the great Twitter reenactment, a perfect way for Home Alone to translate to 2010 tech friendly audiences who may not want to devote two hours to actually watching the movie.

Today a group of Geek Squad representatives have adopted appropriately named character Twitter handles to reenact Home Alone. While some handles are perfect in their simplicity — Buzz’s pet tarantula and bed-wetting cousin Fuller made me smile — the ones behind the movie’s major characters actually hit the nail right on the head. There’s some verbatim quoting, a lot of describing thoughts and actions in brief 140-character bursts, and even the famed Wet Bandits enter Kevin’s house of pain scene reads really well in the Twitter format.

C) Glenn Close dressed in drag for her upcoming film, Albert Nobbs, which follows a 19th century woman who dresses in drag in order to get the work opportunities afforded to men. READ FULL STORY »
