Open letter to Hyundai: Christmas is over; 'tis the season to put the hipsters back in their cage

Dear Hyundai,

It was kind of cute at first. We had fun mocking the breathless innocence of Nataly Dawn’s voice on “Up on the Housetop,” replacing “Up on the housetop, reindeer pause” with “Hah, hah-hah-hah, hah, hah hah hah”…the first 17 or so times. “Jingle Bells” was always  just sort of there. “Deck [pause] The Halls” was annoying from the start. You know that. How could anyone not realize this? Have you just been f—ing with us the whole time?

Come on, we’re begging you. Does the Genesis come with a calendar? It’s December 30. Enough is enough. We’ve seen these commercials 2847582 times. You’re scaring away what could be scores of new Pomplamoose fans who will never want to hear “the dreaded car-commercial hipsters” again — let alone buy a car! I mean you can just forget about the car thing altogether. Weirdos.

From every one of us, have a safe and happy holiday, WHICH IS OVER.
Love, Scrooge!

    newsflash: buy a tivo

    • Silly B

I know! Who still watches commercials?! LMAO, come on EW, this is a sign that your writing staff needs a raise so they can afford a DVR.

      • @Mel

Some people actually do like to watch shows WHEN THEY ARE ON.

      • Scott

Yeah, sometimes I actually like to watch something when they air it. Also, not everyone can afford a magical Tivo so some people have to sit through this crap.

      • John Harbough

A lot of people still watch live tv or just watch the show on sites like Hulu, Tivo is for suckers.

Regarding this commercial, it was always annoying, I hated the close up shots of the girl, were we supposed to think she is cute or something? I always thought there must be an element of nepotism in how they got the gig

      • wendy

I most prefer to watch shows when they’re on but I wait about 20 minutes so that I can still skip the commercials :)

      • melissa

My 12 yr old said she looked like Justin Beiber in those close up shots. So true.

      • Taco Party Outside Bill’s Office

Annie…you are invited. Silly B and Mel…are not!

    • Jay

Tivo is all well and good…. til a football game comes on. Gotta watch those live, unfortunatly. watching taped sports is no fun at all

      • Philly Ray

DVR is a godsend for football. Start watching the game about 20 minutes after it starts and you can skip thought all the commercials for the first half. Then wait another 20 minutes after halftime and again, skip through all the commercials.

      • AcaseofGeo

Philly Ray, thats just STUPID. Just WATCH THE FRACKING GAME LIVE. This country has become a VAST WASTELAND OF “I-MUST-HAVE-IT-ALL-HAVE-IT-NOW-HAVE-IT-MY-WAY” lazy loafing mindless people. Technology is awesome; some people have taken it too far. Why even have jobs, lovers, a car, anything? Why not just put a computer chip in your brain like on that Bruce Willis movie and cease to exist in life at all?

    • ericalina

they are on during a lot of sporting events (football, basketball) which we tend to watch live. these commercials are terrible.

    • LOL

I haven’t seen a Hyundai commercial in ages. Do they still make ‘em?

  • Jay

I was wondering who that chick was. Everytime I see the commercial I think to myself that she is kinda cute in an “under the radar” kind of way.

In any case… AGREED. Time for the Christmas music to STOP already!!!

    • Kevin

I think she’s adorable and I love her breathy little voice. That said, I agree with Annie… these commercials got old FAST!!

  • Cat

I agree stop showing Chistmaas car commercials all the time. It’s really lame.

    • Dan

My favorite is the lexus commercial where the guy wraps it in a bow and parks it in front of a $500,000 home…haha….Not sure what the lexus marketing team is thinking…

      • Candacetx

“awww, honey… a new car note! Just what I needed!!” [kiss]

      • Meli

@Candacetx–exactly! ‘Oh honey, we’re about to be foreclosed on our $500,000 house, but you had just enough to give me a car note. Thank you!’

  • jessica

I watch a lot of TV, and it pains me to admit that, but I’ve never seen any of these commercials.

    • Alia

Me neither… and I watch the commercials even when DVRing, so you’d think I’d have seen them.

    • Prem

Baby Ava, you are in my thoughts and pryeras every day for a speedy recovery. The Lord and all of the angels are watching over you day and night. I pray also for your Mommy, Daddy and the rest of your family .that they may find comfort in knowing that there is a lot of love, powerful prayer and support being sent your way.

  • Daddyb

Haven’t seen any of these ads even once. NO idea what you’re talking about… so obviously the market wasn’t completely saturdated as you seem to think. Oh wait, I forgot, the world DOES revolve around you. pshh.

    • BP

      You’re boring.

      • IRENE CLAYTON-WHITLOW

        You’re an idiot

    • Casey

Daddyb, if you watched any sort of TV I’m sure you’ve heard of seen them. They are on ALL the time. Quit making this about you.

      • Holly

I watch all sorts of TV and I have never seen these either. So they obviously aren’t on “ALL the time.”

    • Kim

I’ve seen them a million times. How are you missing them?

    • Jonathan

To begin with, I would like to thanks in the satller as well as informative access. I will have to acknowledge which often, We have not heard concerning this information. We now have observed quite a few new information with regard to cause. Many thanks a lot for providing this effective as well as interesting information. We’re waiting around pertaining to other thrilling posts due to you from the nearest long term.

  • L

Make one for Honda, too, please! And Mel, not everyone can afford a TiVo, not to mention many people already have a DVR provided by their cable company. And it’s inevitable that you’ll see commercials while watching the news or live TV, so take your comment that makes no sense somewhere else.

    • ks

      Lexas Too!!

      • Karate Pants

Yeah, the big red bow on a car thing is so 80′s excess.

    • BP

Tivo is kinda a catch-all term for dvr. Kinda like band-aid, jell-o and kleenex. You’re welcome.

      • IRENE CLAYTON-WHITLOW

        Talk about boring.

      • Lisa

Right, but a TiVo is something you buy in a store or from TiVo themselves. I personally have a DVR from my cable company. It’s not a subscription service. It’s different.

  • jp

This kind of cutesy makes me feel all stabby inside.

    • Karate Pants

Me too, from the moment they first aired it. The hipsters took my nerves to the shredder. Look at us, we’re so random and ironic. Blech!

      • Mel

Holy crap me too. I cannot STAND these commercials, and I find her way of singing obnoxious. Stabby inside….

      • Madd

ITA. “Oh look, we’re wearing footie pajamas aren’t we adorable?” blech.

      • TV Watcher

        HAHAHA…this captures it exactly!

    • dana

hahaha well said jp. does anyone else find the fact that all the girl does is stare blankly, almost nervously at the camera, and sings while the guy dances around and acts all goofy? anyone else creeped out?

      • Cynymon

Me! Me! Her eyes creep me out so much that I have to change the channel.

      • Char

Me too! She never stops looking at the freakin’ camera in almost all of the spots, like she’s completely uncomfortable. It’s creepy and oh-so-precious. I hated them.

      • Daffny

God bless your little angel. My heart goes out to you and your faimly. As a mom of little ones I can not imagine what you are going through, but as a faithful beleiver in our Lord and Savior Jesus, I can imagine and beleive in his miracles. God has Ava in the palm of his hands. Trust in the Lord with all our hearts and lean not on our own understanding! God Bless You all and little Ava!

    • ks

      • Alex

  • Scott

I mute this commericial every single time it comes on. I can’t stand that woman’s voice. It makes me want to punch every single snowman in the face.

  • James

Same here, never seen or heard of this commercial.

  • Mc Prophet

I HATE that commercial! Her voice is SO ANNOYING!!! She sounds like she suffers from an asthmatic condition. PLEASE RETIRE IT ALREADY!!!

  • Cy

Agreed, L. What’s up with the snark? We can’t complain about commercials now?

  • J

What happened to the 12 days of Christmas? Come on, it’s not really over until January 2nd.

    • Ember

December 6th is the 12th Day of Christmas…Feast of the Epiphany.

      • Ember

ooops! I meant January 6th (thankfully a later commenter has it correct!)

  • PixxieTrixxie

I hate to admit it but I was ready to accept these commercials until at least New Years and then it would be too long. In our house, the season isn’t over until Little Christmas (Feast of the Epiphany on Jan. 6th). Advertising costs so much that it is smart to use the commercials as long as possible. Hyundai isn’t the only one – Honda and several other commercials have been running past Christmas and some radio stations are still playing Christmas music.
Some seasonal music could be played all winter long such as Winter Wonderland but they stop after the holiday season. Strange. I’d love to hear Winter Wonderland in February when we really have some snow.

    • tennisfan

Yes, we hang on to the Christmas season through January 6th as well, which is why I’ve got post-holiday season blues today :-( No more Christmas lights… I’d keep the holiday commericals through all winter if we could keep up the twinkling lights…

  • JC

^^^^ This. Sadly the car commercials (fun at first but now annoying) will stick around until the Monday after new years when all these sales events stop. This set of commercials is the worst!
