New 'Smurfs' photo extremely Smurfy

Hey, a new shot from The Smurfs. It’s not uncanny-valley nightmarish at all! Just kidding; it is a little bit. They just look a little too … I don’t know, biological? It’s like I can feel the sad pallor of their freaky skin, and it’s making me sad. From left to right, I think that’s Clumsy Smurf (voiced by Anton Yelchin), Grouchy Smurf (George Lopez), Papa Smurf (Jonathan Winters), Smurfette (Katy Perry), Gutsy Smurf (Alan Cumming), and Brainy Smurf (Fred Armisen). Smurfy! Smurfs smurfs smurfs.smurfs-movie_510.jpg

On a scale of “oh God, make it stop!” to “you know what, whatever,” how do you feel about this still, PopWatchers? [via]

    I hate everything about this.

    • Tom Strong

I just want to squash them under by boots.

    • your name here

what sux are the actors portraying the smurfs. George lopez as grouchy??? Katy perry? Why not just use the old voice actors from the cartoon. Plus their eyes seem kinda weird.

      • Jen

They’re probably not using the voices from the original show because those people are probably dead.

yep hated them 30 years ago and still hate them dumb as sh*t

  • Jake

I wish it wasnt set in NYC — it will end up weird like the He-Man movie… they should have left it in their world.

    • Alan

It is?? Smurfs Take Manhattan?? That is so stupid. Once thing I loved about the Smurfs (and I LOVED the Smurfs) is that is was set “Long Ago, in a Land Far Away”. It the Black Forest or somewhere in medieval Europe. I’m not totally hating the 3D imagery though.

  • Al

Setting it in Central Park is just so wrong!

  • matt

I would have only seen it if it was set in their world. This makes it gimmicky.

  • Sammy

Yeah. I don’t know why there always seems to be an insistence on taking old cartoons and trying to make them CGI/live action and then moving them into the “real world.” Obviously the original fantasy world was interesting enough to cause them to want to make a movie in the first place, so why then go and change everything about it?

  • Nessab

    They look like Avatar turds.

    • Squirella

      Avaturds!!

      • Sadie

        :’D

  • joblo

they look fake. Obviously they are fake and CGI, but CGI can still look convincing, and these do not look convincing. They look unnatural in their setting.

  • BP

WTF is a Gutsy Smurf? I don’t remember him.

    • Pmks

      Hefty Smurf, I’m thinking.

      • Anonymous

Yeah, but I don’t think he was Scottish. That’s just weird.

  • Jay

I’ll probably watch this on Blu-Ray just cuz I loved the cartoon as a kid, but I have serious doubts that it will actually be any good.
Would it be so horrible to bring some of these old-school cartoons to the big screen as cartoons?
I dont think The Smurfs really need to be CGI… it does look kinda creepy.
And what of the mushroom houses? I haven’t seen any pics of them yet

  • tcc

    No Gargamell?

    • Jeremy

Gargamell is being played by Hank Azaria.

      • Kelly

Which is the only thing worth seeing in this movie!

  • Lisa

Gutsy Smurf seems to be wearing a kilt. Gargamel is being played by Hank Azaria I believe, and will be a live character not CGI.

  • kristen

Where is Aussiello?!?! It seems wrong to even think about Smurfs without him. boo hoo.

    • janny

i think this movie is going to b good for the kids and a big hit.Like my 13 year old daughter and she loves the smurfs and cant wait for the movie to come out

  • Dave

My rage is three apples high.

    • Anonymous

      Ha ha ha ha!

  • Peter Vee

Wait, it’s Smurfs in New York? Wow, they’ve actually made it worse than I thought it would be.

  • Psac

I’m just shocked Jonathan Winters is still alive. Good for him.
