Image Credit: DirecTVDespite the explosion of great options on TV, awards shows continue to play it mostly safe when it comes to nominating the best, and today’s Screen Actors Guild announcement was no exception. There are few surprises among the choices: Of course Dexter and Mad Men are great dramas, and of course 30 Rock and The Office are funny, and of course Hugh Laurie and Glenn Close are good actors. But why not honor an underdog like Community — which would be particularly appropriate for the ensemble category? And even the often-stodgy Emmys had the sense to honor Friday Night Lights‘ Connie Britton and Kyle Chandler with nods this year, but the show didn’t make SAG’s radar at all. And with the Golden Globes nominations out, it’s now official: Lost will end its final season with no major awards love. I blame Jacob.
SAG’s one breath of fresh air came — like so many things this year — courtesy of Betty White, who got a comedy actress nomination for her solid work on Hot in Cleveland and even managed to bring her cast in on her zeitgeisty coattails for an ensemble nod (the only freshman series in the bunch). Not that they don’t deserve some recognition: I genuinely (if guiltily) enjoy the TV Land hit’s traditional-sitcom familiarity, and Valerie Bertinelli, Jane Leeves, and Wendie Malick are pros with great chemistry. But their inclusion is certainly a shock when, say, Nurse Jackie‘s spectacular ensemble didn’t get a mention. I was also disappointed to see Parks and Recreation‘s Amy Poehler, Modern Family‘s Julie Bowen and Eric Stonestreet, and Sons of Anarchy‘s Katey Sagal all left without individual acting nods.

So what did the SAG nominations miss? What are you happy to see on this list?

LOST LOST LOST.
Also Parks and Rec and Cougar Town (Hot in Cleveland? Really?). And, of course, Fringe.
FRINGE’s John Noble and Lance Reddick should have been nominated, so should have John Locke (forgot the actor’s name). Someone please explain the appeal of Law and Order SVU – I’ve seen it, nothing special about it or any of the actors’ preformances.
Last comment on male in a comedy – Jerry Trainor from iCarly should have gotten recognized – he IS the show and what makes it watchable
So agree with the overlooking travesty of Fringe and especially Community in the ensemble category, because this show always shows how well the ensemble works when they pair them up in different combinations and it kills EVERY time! And it’s always pretty even on the amount of screen time each cast member gets. Even though I love the shows, you definitely can’t say that about Glee and The Office, where a lot of the ensemble are soley backup/background for much of the episodes.
YOU gonna smack me silly, azzwipe? that ‘you need to find a new hubby’ was weak and distored, like your herpes addled brain. LOL.
Not so much Lost, but yes Fringe, Is Walking Dead too late to be nominated? Shows like that don’t seem to get noms from actors, (See Lord of The Rings, Zoe Saldana in Avatar – love or hate that film her performance was epic). What about Robert Carlyle
ummm, they totally screwed the most great movie of all time ever in the entire universe: Eclipse!!!!!! All thsi other stupid stuff dosnt even compear!!!!! Twilight fans will lives 4EVUH!!!!!!
Do everyone a favour and shut up about Twilight. It’s nominated Razzie awards – it’s not all that. And Eclipse is the most flawed one of them all.
I expected better from the SAG. FRINGE and COMMUNITY should have been locks for the ensemble awards at the very least. Too many names in this list who have been nominated year after year after year…
I agree! Snubbing the best drama and the best comedy on TV in one fell swoop? Shame on you, SAG awards…
No doubt! I LOVE Mariska Hargitay but really?!?! REALLY?!?!? No Connie Britton? These ppl just HATE FNL apparently. I mean, damn.
I love Mariska, too, and I think she is deserving a nod because she is REALLY good. Connie is just ok, to me, but Kyle Chandler, now, that guy is getting better every year…and sexier by the minute (sorry, Mrs. Chandler).
My thoughts exactly
Community is hilarious…the way Ahbed talks really really fast all the time…every week…every scene. Hilarious
And this is why I have given up on these “awards” shows.
sure you have…
Yes he has, how dare you question him!
Seriously! And can someone PLEASE tell me what is funny about ‘Nurse Jackie’??? Why is this show included in the comedy category?
‘Nurse Jackie’ is funny because would like to see a drama about a drug-addicted, philandering wife who seems just pure mean to people who are not in your cirle. Oh, is that too much like real life for you. Then you know “Nurse Jackie” is brilliant, because if I could like I really want to at work mine woule be a comedy too. (Big Snub on the cast! Brilliant cast!)
You must mean “Nurse Betty”. I mean, that’s what it says in the story, and it was written by a professional.
Big Bang Theory!!! Already an Emmy win for Jim Pardons, but no recognition for the show????
Amen! Why is Big Bang Theory so overlooked? It’s got the smartest humor I’ve seen in a long time.
Humor about physics may sound smart, but it is not funny.
the REFERENCES are smart, but the “humor” is 100% not.
terrible show. it is 2.5 men with geeks, cbs has zero brains or real talent
If you don’t like The Big Bang Theory, that doesn’t mean it’s not funny…it only means it’s not funny to you.
It’s amazing how difficult a concept that is for some people to understand.
Big Bang Theory is missing? Has EVERYONE gone mad?
That show sucks.
I so agree.
THIS!
It jumped the shark last season
My thoughts exactly. The show is funny, smart, silly and every thing in between.
I’m pleased with the inclusion of Ed O’Neill finally. He is absolutely hilarious.
I couldn’t agree more!
JENNIFER CARPENTER GOT SNUBBED AGAIN!????!!
First off her name was Karen, and she is dead.
Irene I hope you were kidding… Jennifer Carpenter is on Dexter.
She’s great. Dump Mariska she’s got one expression and can’t act and she keeps getting nominated. Should have been Jennifer.
Mariska is absolutely great and has a great personality. I met her and she is very friendly and deserves this award. You should also think that she is sending out a lot of messages on SVU for victims of violence, sexual assault, etc. I love Mariska. She is the best.
Totally agree. She has been brilliant the past two seasons.
About time The Office got some respect again. It is NOT easy playing these characters, so, to be nominated by their peers is great. Hope Steve wins!
Amen brother! I love 30 Rock and Alec is bomb but holy hell somebody show Steve some love!
True Blood. Not the strongest season of the show, but always good acting.
It’s no Vampire Dairy!
As much as I love TVD…TB is on a whole other level.
Vampire Dairy? Do the vampires drain cows in your version?
Vampire Diaries is AFTRA not SAG
really? That show pales in comparison to True Blood.
I think Irene is drunk
Modern Family is AFTRA and they got nominated.
Too bad SAG felt the need to nominate The Insufferable One again instead of recognizing someone who can actually act.
No Friday Night Lights love again. It’s unbelievable.
Where the f is Courteney Cox in these nominations?
Thank you! Courtney Cox and the Cougar Town cul-de-sac crew rock!
WORD! Also, no drama ensemble is better than the one assembled over on Parenthood!
You really need to add the cast of parenthood, Lauren Graham and Courteney Cox!! They deserve it!
glad for “Hot in Cleveland” – very funny show. Only regret is the snub of Katey Segal – she is amazing on “Sons of Anarchy”
This is the second SAG-related article or post with Edie Falco starring in Nurse Betty instead of Nurse Jackie.
I know. I don’t even watch the show and I know that it’s not called ‘Nurse Betty’.
Thanks for your post. I thought I was going nuts for a minute. I googled ‘Nurse Betty’ and sure enough, Edie Falco showed up. I thought maybe she was doing a parody nurse show on some weird cable channel. Also, am I nuts or did the writer of the above article actually say Falco wasn’t nominated for Nurse Jackie? Then…it didn’t.
Laura Linney.
OMG!!! Tell me about it…The Big C is the most original new show on tv…I absolutely adore Laura Linney
Completely agree with the Laura Linney thing. That’s a shock. Also seriously disappointed about Julie Bowen and Jesse Tyler Ferguson.
