Donny and Marie on Broadway: A little bit country, a little bit rock & roll, plus wind machines!

A-Broadway-ChristmasImage Credit: Kim GoodwinDonny & Marie — A Broadway Christmas opened last night on the Great White Way, and we couldn’t be happier. EW critic Melissa Rose Bernardo gives the Vegas-style production a solid A– grade, and it’s easy to see why. They call it puppy love. For pop culture fans of a certain age (and you know who you are), the brother-sister act from that ginormous Mormon clan of singer-musicians represents a touchstone of childhood. Every Friday night, we’d tune in to see the chubby-cheeked siblings gently squabble with each other and belt out bubblegum hits like “Paper Roses” and “Go Away Little Girl.” They were the safe, wholesome pop idols — the ones our parents wouldn’t mind us hanging out with (and the ones we’d consider going to the church mixer to see).

And is there a better time than the holidays to evoke that warm glow of nostalgia? Donny & Marie are fiftysomething showbiz survivors now, with a history of tabloid scandals and reality show triumphs. (He won season 9 of Dancing With the Stars; she was a season 5 finalist.) And their Broadway show is as hokey as you’d expect: There are dance numbers, medleys in various musical genres, costume changes galore (typically involving tight jeans for him, sequins for her). Oh, and wind machines. You know Donny can rock a wind machine — though perhaps not the heavy-metal hit “Crazy Horse.” (Really, Donny?)

Is anyone else considering a trip to the Marquis Theatre for Donny & Marie’s holiday revue?

Some friends and I saw the show last evening. We had a fantastic time. Both Donny and Marie know how to entertain. It truely was a blast from the past and I would go she their show on or Broadway or in Vegas any time.

Unless they extend again, I’ll miss them by less than a week. I can’t really stomach Donny but have always liked Marie and was completely blown away by her when she did “The King and I” on Broadway.

They define “Pure Entertainers”. They are the last of a already dying breed. personally, I ‘ve always wanted Metallica to cover “Crazy Horses”. Can you imagine how cool that would sound!

Oh, if only I hadn’t squandered my last unemployment check on FOOD and HEAT!

Just an FYI from someone who grew up in the 70’s … “Crazy Horses” was recorded by the Osmond Brother’s and that is the connection with Donny :)

I would be the first in line if I lived in New York.

I’m so glad that the show is going well and people are enjoying it. I hope it becomes a Christmas tradition in NY. I’m confused about the “Crazy Horses” comment though – you do know that the song is his family’s right? That he did do the original (although not as lead singer).

i’m a little surprised that this is in NY and not Vegas…

My family surprised me with tickets to their Vegas show this past January. I have always been a Donny fan, since 1972! Could not wait to see it!! I was very dissapointed in Donny :-( He didn’t sing the songs that made him famous and tried to be something he’s not, a rocker. Marie blew me away! She is a fantastic entertainer and what a voice! Together they are great, but Donny needs to stick to what he does best, sing his songs that the fans want to hear.

I so envy you guys who get to see them on Broadway. I love Donny & Marie. I still remember watching their show every Friday night back in the ’70s. Good times!

So awesome to see Donny in NYC!! It was a dream come true after 37 years of my school girl crush!! The topper was getting a high 5! Such a great trip down memory lane. Love you, Donny!

thought the show was way to cheesy
    marie looks terrible
    dancers were not together
band was great!!! overall hated it liked it so much better in vegas did they make some changes cuz it shows to the negative

  • vegas love

Saw it in Vegas 3 times 2010 loved it. Amazing show
Just saw it on our family trip to NYC for the holidays Waste of money and time!!!
Cannot figure out why its not as good but I recognized that the cast was different and didn’t like it now. They are not as clean and together. I am from the stage and like things neat and mature. Very messy dancing Had some accidents when the dancers ran into each other. So unprofessional. Hope itsthe same as it was when we go back to Vegas!
