Last Thursday may have been Michael Scott’s last Office Christmas party, but Steve Carell is still thinking about the show’s future, even if it doesn’t include him. Carell will be on The Ellen DeGeneres Show tomorrow, spreading holiday cheer and sharing his ideas for Michael’s replacement next season. Among his most surprising potential candidates? Former Secretary of State Colin Powell. Read an excerpt from their interview below.
Steve: I honestly don’t know what they’re going to do. There are various ideas. It’s funny. The producers have, time to time, thrown names out there to screw people up.
Ellen: Oh, really?
Steve: Yeah. They’ll just put anybody. They’ll just start naming [people]. Colin Powell, I think is going to be the next Michael Scott. And people jump on it and don’t see the irony at all.
Ellen: Maybe they’re testing it to see what people are going to respond to the most. If there’s a name that people really kind of hold on to.
Steve: Yeah, that’s true.
Ellen: Don’t you have an idea? Do you have somebody or like a few people that you think would be great to replace you?
Steve: You know what. I’m leaving that to the producers. I think it would be in their best interest just to sort of go in a different direction and not try to do the same type of character.
Ellen: I agree.
Carell has previously said he doesn’t need Michael to find happiness to be satisfied with his impending exit, so it makes sense that he doesn’t expect nor want producers to recreate Michael 2.0. But will Scranton be the same without “…that’s what she said” silencing every meeting? Would you rather have a Regional Manager who has a little bit of Michael Scott’s je ne sais quoi, or do you hope the show goes in a different direction entirely? Should The Office hire someone new, or promote a current employee — Kelly has been climbing the ranks thanks to Sabre’s Minority Executive Training Program … Hello Kitty laptop sleeves for everyone! — sound off below! i can’t wait to see how they handle michael’s (aka steve’s) exit from the show.
i feel it brewing already, discreetly.
i just don’t see how they’re going to pull it off!
as a hardcore office fan, i’ll stick around after the world’s best boss departs, but the producers and writers will need to STEP UP THEIR GAME!
On NPR, they threw out the idea of Daryl being Michael’s successor which I think is a great idea. I think Kelly is better as a background character.
As long as they don’t put Jim in charge again. That idea is done and done.
I think Darryl would be a good idea, he’s familiar to the audience but not too familiar like Dwight, Jim and Pam are now. If they go the Darryl route, they’ll need to introduce new character(s) to generate conflict. It’d be pretty boring watching a nice and competent boss intereact with his employees.
I believe Mindy Kaling has said this will be her last year on the show so Kelly won’t be taking over.
Two words : Michael Emerson.
If his pilot with Terry O’Quinn is a bust, count me in!
He’d bring awesome creepy atmosphere to the show.
PLEASE MICHAEL EMERSON
Ever since they moved Daryl upstairs, I wondered if he wouldn’t be the one to replace Michael.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: this should be the final season of the Office. What better way to go, but with Michael Scott?
Came here for the idiotic comments about how The Office should be canceled. Was not disappointed.

Came here for some reason but forgot what that was. Am I disappointed? I don’t know.
“I think it would be in their best interest just to sort of go in a different direction and not try to do the same type of character.”
I 100% agree with this statement of Carell’s, which is why I don’t think someone like Rhys Darby (who was hilarious on “Flight of the Conchords”) would be a good idea. He’d basically be Kiwi Michael Scott.
If we’re talking about promoting from within, I find myself warming more and more to the idea of Daryl. He’s funny, he’s capable (Daryl’s already been commended for his ideas) and he’d have his won personal Dwight-like sycophant/buddy in Andy.
his own* personal Dwight…
Will Ferrell
C. Everett Koop!
how bout Ricky Gervais?
Dare to dream…
Trying to think if he’s already been in an episode (dont think he has) but i think Rob Corddy for hot tub tiime machine would be an excellent replacement for michael scoot.
Just end the show. They could pick the absolute, most perfect person possible, and it just won’t work. Everyone will say it was better with Steve Carrell. Fade to black already.

Came here for an original comeback to someone’s honest opinion. Was disappointed. See previous threads.
I agree about Darryl. They’re grooming Darryl to take over and for Andy to be his Dwight.
how about Todd Packard?
Please no! =)
I think it will be Daryl. He has risen through the ranks from the warehouse into the office and is obviously and demonstably on the radar of corporate.
That would be a pretty interesting choice. Plus, they could see what the position does to him. I remember episodes where Jim was in charge that didn’t go well and led viewers to believe that Michael may have once been a cool guy too before becoming the “clueless boss.”
I still love the idea of Will Arnett being the new boss. His Fox show has been cancelled. He’s like Steve Carrel, can be a dufus but has a sweet side to him. I can see him flirting with all the women and messing with Dwight. Darryl is good but I can see the regular employees being able to get away with much since he already knows them. Someone new needs to come in as boss.
i really enjoyed your show today with jamie foxx. it was nice and all the wonderful gifts was awesome also. i hope one day that im pick for the gift giveaway. lol
