i think about all the great films that were made between say bonnie and clyde, the wild bunch and apocalypse now and know guys like tony scott, bay, cameron, bruckheimer and simpson are just hacks. cameron is not an artist. he does not make personal films. he is not a director. he like george lucas is merely a technician.
Ok grandpa, time to step away from the computer.. it is past your bedtime
i rejected today’s empty, hollow movies and went back and discovered films that were about people and emotions as opposed to objects and product placement.
watch some david lynch films to see how a real director does it, not some technical hack like bay.
today’s youth market/kiddie market sadly knows nothing about the rich history of cinema. all they seem to know about are opening weekend numbers. film makers that cater to the youth market are just as much to blame as the audience that gobbles up this crap. they would do themselves a favor by going by and checking out some original film noir and the val lewton produced psychological thrillers of the 1940′s.
Hollywood has already made those movies, and you can pick them up on VHS at your local grocer next to the microwaveable snacks.
In attempting to compare Bay to Cameron you’re actually displaying an oxymoronic mixture of snobbery and ignorance tinged with a dash of elitest “name dropping”. Just because Cameron can make easy, summer action films like true Lies it doesn’t take away from the criticaly acclaimed genius of films like Aliens, Terminator and The Abyss. Nor the groundbreaking nature of his work in films like Avatar, Abyss and even Titanic.
I love this rose tinted idea that there were only good movies made 20 years before the date on which someone is complaining about “current” movies. They tried it when Spielberg and co were making Jaws, Close Encounters etc (films regarded as modern classics now).
For every Maltese Falcon and Key Largo, there’s a dozen or more films that nobody has even heard of now. Many oof the films we look back to, like the Searchers or It’s a Wonderful Life, were poorly received, sometimes even box office failures, when they came out.
But the real issue is this. If you don’t like “summer blockbusters” don’t watch them; there’s a misconception that “better” films don’t get made because of the industry’s reliance on big, blockbusters. The reverse is true. Not only because there are many types of films being made every month all over the world, but because the money that gets made from the Transformers of this world is what pays for the offbeat Black Swans. Nolan gets to make Inception and The Prestige BECAUSE of the existence and success of Batman movies.
If you don’t like hot dogs, and fish & chips Frasier / Niles; fair enough, but don’t kid yourself that the whole world has to have fine wine and caviar for every meal because they don’t. Those people that can enjoy ALL types of good movies (good as in entertaining AND /OR good as in a critical, technical or creative masterpiece), are having more fun than you.
Just to say, this is aimed at an attitude not at any individual. I wrote about this same issue for SyFy and it’s always bugged me.
For once, I’d like to see some Hollywooders admit a suckfest before we spend money on it.
Transformers 1 wasn’t so bad; but #2 was crap. I walked out of the theater with partial deafness and a killer headache from that loud grinding metal sound. Also, the overuse of explosions, slow motion, and complete lack of story personifies Bay as a total hack.
I gotta say, I found it hilarious that “artsy stuff” linked to the Victoria’s Secret commercial he directed lmao!
the first one had good story….. i even liked d 2nd one….. but no story that was a drawback.. the action was super…. waiting for the third part……
Every time I think of Michael Bay, I think of unnecessary explosions and whacked out actions scenes and horrible dialogue.
bay and company make films for the Ritalin riddled ADD youth market. for them no story, no plot, no characters = no problem.
He needs to give me my refund on the $6 ticket I spent to “watch”/endure this movie back. Plus the money I spent for aspirin to get rid of the headaches I got from the metal fight scenes, if you can call them that. Also, for me actually falling asleep and also getting a headache from actually spending a couple of minutes to figure out the plot of the film. Mea culpa ain’t buying you jack, Bay.
No one forced any of you to see the movies, if you thought it was bad, then its your opinion. I watch Transformers for the nostalgia and the raw energy from the fight scenes…I’m not going to see an Oscar winning performance, and I know that going into the theater.
I loved the Trans-1 could have been better but it didn’t completely suck I like the robots is better than waiting too long for sequels like Terminator or 007.
